The Week in Review- Dec. 16-22, 2013

Lots of action in Bulldog land leading up to the Winter break with many teams in action. Big crowds at the home basketball and hockey games showed great Bulldog pride during the holiday season!

Big Week for Boys Basketball- The Boys Basketball team headed into the week looking to rebound from an opening game loss to powerhouse Taunton- and rebound they did. They won two huge Davenport tilts at home- one over defending champion Milford and the other over perennial power Oliver Ames. The Milford game saw the Bulldogs defend tremendously well, limiting the SkyHawk offence in the 48-41 win. The OA game was a different story as it was all about the Bulldog's offense as their incredible perimeter shooting led to a 78-68 win. Sam Larson, Tristan Morris and Matt Kelly were three of the Bulldog's top performers on the week.

Wrestlers shine in early meets- Despite only managing one win in their four matches as a team this week, many wrestlers had tremendous performances. Rob DiCalogero and Chris Sullivan went 4-0 in their matches this week while Waleed Chakir was 3-0 in Saturday's quad at Hingham. Brendan Lewis and Wavol Prentice were also among those with big victories this week. The team's sole team victory came in Saturday's quad over North Quincy 48-6.

Girls Hockey splits the week- The Girls Hockey team earned a big opening day win over Medway on Wednesday night, 2-1. Katie Kelleher paced the Bulldog offensive attack, netting both of the Bulldog goals. Friday saw the team play well against pre-season divisional favorite Westwood.  Despite matching the Wolverines in play for most of the game, the 'dogs were unable to find the back of the net and allowed two goals before eventually falling, 3-0 (the final one being on an open net).

Boys Hockey faces iron early- The Boys Hockey roster hasn't featured this many freshmen and sophomores for many, many seasons.  The young team had no time to ease its way into the season as they had to face both Franklin and Oliver Ames this week. The Panthers had won the Hock Kelley-Rex Division last year and the Tigers had eliminated the Bulldogs from the playoffs last season. The Franklin game was an even affair except the Bulldogs struggled to score while allowing the Panthers to take advantage of their opportunities, ultimately falling, 5-1. The OA game saw the Bulldogs play well again, taking a 3-1 lead late into the 3rd period before surrendering two goals and having to settle for a frustrating 3-3 tie. Sophomore Matt Lazaro (2) and senior Austin Zanino scored the Bulldog goal in the tie.

Swim teams edged by league power- The Boys and Girls Swim teams have had to overcome quite a bit early this season as they lost their home pool for at least the first 3/4 of the season and have been a team without a true home as a result. Hosting their first ever home meets at Randolph High School on Saturday, the teams faced perennial league power North Attleboro and gave them quite a fight.  The girls fell 84-77 and the boys fell 84-78. Those are incredibly close scores for a swim meet. Some top performers included- Felicia Lee in the 200 IM and Erin Martin in the 100 Fly. The 200 IM and 200 Free relay teams of Julia Guerini, Kim Frazier, Tiffany Ha and Emilee Mercuri both had tremendous times. Highlights on the boys' side included the 200 IM relay team of Diego Ferstier, Sean Mitchell, Dan Nadeau and Yanni Papadopoulos as well as the 200 Free relay team of Mitchell, Nadeau, Papadopoulos and Sam Riemer.

Gymnasts and Girls Hoop team perform well in losses-  The Gymnastics team saw many contributions from new, young members of the team as well as some seasoned veterans in an opening day loss to Oliver Ames. The same can be said of the start to the Girls Basketball season which has seen the 'dogs fall in their three games, but each game featured great 2nd half performances and improvement along the way!

The Week in Review- 12/8-12/21/13

The winter season got started this week as Track, Basketball and Wrestling all had their first contests of the season while scheduled hockey games on Saturday were postponed due to snow.

Wrestlers break even- The Wrestling team started the season at a dual tournament at Bristol Aggie on Saturday. The team got in a great deal of wrestling in this first day of competition, earning team wins against Hanover (42-42- win on tie-breaker) and Bristol Aggie (53-17) while falling to Wakefield (33-45) and Sabis (24-58).  Chris Sullivan, Rob DiCalogero and Brendan Lewis were perfect on the day- each going 4-0 while Mike Reese went 3-1. Max Platt, Courtland Priest, Waleed Chakir and Steili Dandis each earned multiple Bulldog victories on the day.

Boys and Girls Basketball teams fall to Taunton- Opening the hoop season against perennial power Taunton was quite a task for both the Boys and Girls squads, but both teams fought hard in what ended up being two losses. The Boys game was close throughout before the visitors pulled away in the 2nd half, defeating the Bulldogs 73-54. Sam Larson led the way for the Bulldogs scoring 18 points in the loss. The Girls game followed the opposite pattern, with the visiting Bulldogs digging themselves a deep hole by halftime, but battled back in the 2nd to make a great game of it, falling 51-38. The Girls were led by Shannon Foley's 14 point performance.

The Bulldog track teams ran up against powerful Oliver Ames in the league opener and were outmatched despite some strong performances.

Everyone is in action this week so next week's Week in Review will certainly have much more to it!

A new opportunity?

The time between the holidays is always very exciting around a high school athletic department and Canton High School is no exception. This is the time of year when our winter sports season kicks off and our student athletes are readying to represent their school and community in our gyms, rinks, tracks, and pools.  It's a time of year of hope, promise, excitement and potential. Unfortunately, this time of year can also bring painful news to some aspiring student athletes. It's the time of year when some of our student athletes are being cut from teams.

Roster cuts are a necessary evil of high school athletics. We strive to make opportunities available to as many of our student athletes as possible, but teams and rosters have their reasonable limits.

Over the past two decades of working in the CHS Athletic Department, I have seen countless examples of student athletes getting cut from one sport, only to go out for another and realize that they had a talent that they had never recognized before. Our indoor track and wrestling teams are currently still accepting new-comers at practice. Who knows, maybe the next great distance runner or state champion wrestler at CHS had been an aspiring hockey or basketball player. Who knows, maybe it's you.

4th Quarter comeback comes up just short in Thanksgiving game

The Bulldog Football team went into Thanksgiving morning with hopes of knocking off favored Stoughton for the 2nd straight season.  The team certainly gave Bulldog fans plenty to cheer about and provided quite a 4th quarter comeback for those fans who braved the cold temperatures until the end. But it was too little to late as the 'Dogs fought hard but had to settle for seconds, falling 28-20.

The game started out on a high note for the Bulldogs who seemed to catch the Knights sleeping. A nearly flawless first possession saw the home team score on a 4-play drive, ending with a Sterling Garvin rushing touchdown. The 'Dogs (3-8) kept the Knights (10-2) off the scoreboard for the rest of the half but were unable to capitalize on a couple of good scoring chances and had to settle for the 7-0 lead at the break.

The 3rd quarter was all Black Knights as the visitors seemed to come out of the locker room with more determination for the 2nd half. An early Stoughton touchdown tied it up and was quickly followed up by three more Black Knight visits to the end zone, resulting in a 28-7 Stoughton lead midway through the final quarter.

With many frigid fans heading to the exits and turkey dinner, it appeared that the game was out of reach, but the Bulldogs had other plans. A Garvin 4 yard run and a perfect 32 yard strike of a pass from Brian Hagan to Derrick Harris narrowed the lead to just 8 points with about 2 minutes left. The Harris touchdown opportunity came as a result of a Bulldog onside kick recovery- something the 'dogs have been quite successful with this season. After an apparent 2nd onside kick recovery was called back due to illegal touching, the 'dogs could have quit, but instead, they caused a Stoughton fumble and got the ball back in Black Knight territory and marched down to the 15 yard line. With plenty of momentum, thoughts turned to yet another Turkey Day OT finish, but it was not meant to be as a Stoughton interception in the corner of the end zone iced the victory for the Black Knights.

It was a great high school football game, complete with great play, comebacks and great sportsmanship by both teams on the gridiron. The stands featured a packed WWII Veteran's Memorial Field with students, relatives, and community members rallying behind both teams.  The CHS Band did a tremendous job rallying the crowd and the boys on the field while the Regional Champion Cheerleaders performed exceptionally well on the sidelines.

The Bulldogs honored two greats from the class of 1976.  Billy Cravens- who is currently battling ALS- served as Honorary Captain for the Bulldogs, while Jimmy Duggan- who passed away last week was honored during the pre-game ceremony for his fine Bulldog career and all of his commitment to Canton Athletics ever since.  Canton High School Athletics is Thankful to have so many great alums who continue to give back years after walking our halls. Happy Thanksgiving to all.

Swim Team Information Update- and Meeting Scheduled

This blog post is intended for parent and student-athletes interested in joining the swim team next week.

There will be an informational meeting held at CHS in the cafeteria at 2:00pm on Tuesday, Nov. 26th to discuss the issues below.

Due to unforeseen construction delays in the Blue Hills Regional Pool project, we have lost Blue Hills as a home base for our swim program during the month of December.

We have been working diligently to set up alternative plans to allow for the swim team to function during this important month of the season. We realize that the times and locations listed below are not ideal but we feel it is a great solution to our dilemma.

Our swim team will be using two alternative sites during the month of December- Randolph High School pool and Massachusetts Hospital School pool.

Randolph's pool is located at their high school at 70 Memorial Parkway in Randolph. It is a pool our student-athletes are familiar with as we have competed against other Hockomock schools there for many years.

Mass. Hospital School pool is located on their campus on Randolph Street in Canton. Their pool is mainly used for OT purposes so it is kept at a temperature too high for competitive training. Our coaching staff will be using it for stroke instruction only and not workouts.

Coach Mooney will refine the schedule as the week's go on, but this link will take you to the December calendar as of 11-25-13.

The Canton High School Athletic Department will also be providing bus transportation to and from practices and meets held at Randolph High School. The bus will pick students up at CHS at the scheduled time, make a pick up at Blue Hills Regional High School for students who live closer to that location, and then head out to Randolph High School.  Students choosing to transport themselves to the practices/meets at Randolph MUST submit a note from their parents granting permission to do so.

Cheerleaders take 3rd at States

The Fall CHS Cheer squad made local history this season, advancing to the States after finishing 1st in the Regionals last weekend. This past weekend saw the team travel to Holden, Mass. to perform their routine in the States. They performed incredibly well finishing 3rd in the entire state! Congratulations to the team on a great season!

The Week in Review- 11/11/13-11/17/13

Football team makes it 3-in-a-row- An amazing 4th quarter comeback earned the Football team its 3rd straight victory Saturday, 27-21 over host Dedham. The Bulldogs jumped out to an early 7-0 lead on a Sterlin Garvin 15 yard gallop to the Marauder end zone but it was all Marauders from that point throughout the 3rd quarter as they put up 3 unanswered touchdowns on the 'dogs to take a 21-7 lead into the 4th quarter. But the 'dogs were awoken and played inspired football in that final quarter. Bulldog quarterback Brian Hagan got the visitors on the board again early in the 4th and that is when the fun started. The ensuing CHS kickoff saw Paul Lindor cause a Dedham fumble and Kevin Wing recover it on their opponent's 10 yard line. A 7 yard touchdown run by Tommy Galvin tied the game up at 21 a-piece. Dedham would then give the ball back to the Bulldogs on yet another key turnover and the Bulldogs would not waste the opportunity to take the lead. Hagan's 9 yard run put the surging 'dogs up 27-21. After bending a bit on a final drive by Dedham, the Bulldog "D" hung tough and stopped the Marauders on 4th and 13, earning the ball back and the victory.

The win improves the team's record to 3-7 and is the team's 3rd consecutive win. The team has 10 days to prepare for a Thanksgiving showdown with the recently crowed D3 Southwest Champion Stoughton Black Knights who will travel to Canton for this year's annual game- kickoff- 10:00am.

Cheerleaders crowned Regional Champions- Today saw the Cheerleading squad outperform all other squads in the Small Co-Ed South Regionals held at Dartmouth High School. The team has been on a roll of late, putting in some of the finest performances in years. The team's championship also qualifies them for the States next weekend. Go 'Dogs!

Football looks for 3 in a row Saturday

The Varsity Football team will be looking to earn its 3rd straight victory when they travel to Dedham on Saturday for a 1:00pm kickoff with the Marauders. The team has exploded for 80 points in their past two games while only allowing their opponents to score 20. They will look to build the momentum as they head into our Thanksgiving game with Stoughton- at CHS at 10:00am this year.

Cheerleaders set for Regionals

The Week in Review- 11/4/13-11/10/13

Cheerleaders Advance to Regionals- A season high score at Sunday's Hock Championships qualified the CHS Fall Cheerleaders for the Regionals. The fine performance in the Hocks was the icing on the cake in a season full of great performances at recent invitationals. The team has achieved all of these accolades while finding the time to cheer on the Football team all season in between their busy routine training.

Volleyball- Sectional Finalists once again- Wins at CHS on Tuesday and Thursday over Marlboro and Hopkinton advanced the Volleyball team to the D2 Central Sectional Final for the 2nd straight season. The top seeded Bulldog headed to Hudson on Saturday to face #2 seeded Westboro in the final, looking to defend the championship they won in 2012. Unfortunately, the team was edged by the Rangers, 3-1, and would have to settle for the title of sectional finalist- not too shabby!

The early week matches were phenomenal examples of how teamwork leads to success as coach Cawley called upon many different team members in the victories- 3-0 over Marlboro and 3-1 over Hopkinton. The Hopkinton match showed incredible mental toughness as the Bulldogs were involved in 4 very tight games, three of which they won by the score of 27-25. Check out the video below of the final point of the huge semi-final victory. Great excitement in the Dog Pound too!

Football makes it two in a row- Friday night saw the football team travel to Coyle Cassiday High School and come home with a 38-14 victory- the team's 2nd in as many games. The 'dogs had to play catch up as Coyle struck first just 21 seconds into the game on a 71 yard touchdown. But it was all Bulldogs after that. The game featured a tremendous performance by the Canton defense. Offensively, Derrick Harris, Kevin Wing, Sterling Garvin, and Matt Bagley all found the Coyle end zone for the 'dogs.

The win improves the team's post-season record to 2-0 with two games to play- at Dedham next Saturday at 1:00pm and on Thanksgiving at CHS vs. Stoughton at 10:00am.

XC runners excel at Sectional Meet- Members of the Boys XC team ran some of their best races of the season at the Sectional meet at Wrentham on Saturday. Each member of the Boys team finished in under 19:45- an impressive team performance.  The Girls ran exceptionally well as well. Cat Song and Amanda Eagles finished in the top 30 and the team finished 11th out of 22 teams. Song's time was good enough to qualify her for next weekend's state meet.

Volleyball punches ticket to Hudson to defend crown

The Volleyball team showed unbelievable mental toughness in Thursday night's 3-1 (27-25, 27-25, 22-25, 27-25) victory over Hopkinton in the Central D2 Sectional Semi-Final. The win advances the team to the Central D2 Final in Hudson at 2:00pm Saturday where they will defend their 2012 Sectional Championship against Westboro, who defeated Medfield tonight, 3-2.

It was an all-around great effort for the team in their final home game of the season, showing amazing grit in winning their three games by the narrowest of margins (all 27-25). When the chips are down, this team really plays their best.

The Week in Review- 10/28/13-11/3/13

Football team earns big victory over Randolph- Friday night saw the Football team best Randolph, 42-6 to earn their first victory of the season. The game was the beginning of a run of post-Hockomock games that also includes traveling to Coyle Cassidy High School on Friday, Nov. 8th and traveling to Dedham High School on Saturday, Nov. 16th.

The 'dogs came out flying early as they put up 28 unanswered first half points against the Blue Raiders.
That half saw quarterback Brian Hagan throw two big touchdown passes to Derrick Harris (30 and 32 yards), Sterlin Garvin break around the corner for a 57 yard gallop to the end zone, and Kevin Wing explode right through the center of the Blue Raider line for a touchdown of his own.

There was more of the same from the Bulldogs in the 2nd half as they were firing on all cylinders. Hagan found Tommy Galvin in the corner of the end zone for a 3rd quarter touchdown and Tim Gutowski's 3 yard trot into the Blue Raider end zone in the 4th quarter rounded out the Bulldog scoring for the day. Freshman Thomas Monagle had a great day kicking the football which included some great kick-offs and 4 successful PAT's.

The Bulldog defense was strong all day, picking off passes and penetrating deep into the Randolph backfield all day.

Girls Soccer falls in Double OT- Soccer can be a cruel sport and that was certainly the case on Sunday as the Girls Soccer team played a great game but fell 2-1 in double OT to visiting Holliston in the first round of the state tournament. The team was trailing 1-0 midway through the 2nd half when they turned up the pressure and began to dominate play. The dominating play led to a goal of the year candidate as Hailee Duserick's beautifully driven cross found Kim McNally on the back post and McNally headed it with authority past the Holliston goalkeeper. The Bulldogs then dominated the rest of the way and hit the post but they were unable to find the back of the net. A Holliston goal just 7 seconds into the 2nd sudden victory OT period ended the Bulldog season.

Boys Soccer falls in 1st round- The #10 seeded Boys Soccer team traveled to Duxbury on Saturday to face the #7 seeded Dragons in first round MIAA tourney action and fell 2-1. Sam Larson scored a beautiful goal and Art McNally was phenomenal in Canton's goal, but it wasn't enough as the Bulldogs' 2013 season came to a close with a final record of 9-7-3. The loss marks the first time since 2005 that the team did not advance to at least the Sectional Semi-Final round- an unprecedented run in EMASS boys soccer.

Field Hockey season ends in D1 tourney debut- The #8 seeded Field Hockey team hosted #9 Norwood in the first round of the MIAA state tournament on Thursday and lost in a very competitive day, 2-1. Katie Kelleher scored the Canton goal and both Mustang goals came on strokes. This was the Bulldogs' first foray into the D1 tournament due to MIAA realignment. The loss wraps up another championship season for the Field Hockey team. The graduating class of seniors won 4 Hock Davenport Championships and only lost a remarkable 6 games during that stretch.

Cross Country Runners perform well at Bay State Invitational- Several CHS XC runners ran well in Saturday's Bay State Invitational in Wrentham. This major invitational is a featured race of the season and many Bulldog runners showed they were up for the challenge. Courtland Priest led the way for the boys while Amanda Eagles and Cat Song were the first CHS girls to cross the finish line at 13th and 16th respectively. Courtney Loughnane and Julia Guerini also finished in the top 50 with impressive performances.

Volleyball to enter tourney on heals of two big wins- The sop seeded Volleyball team had two big matches to end the season this past week, traveling to highly touted Quincy on Monday and hosting league foe Foxboro on Wednesday. The team did not disappoint, downing both in relatively convincing fashion. Wednesday's 3-0 (25-14, 25-8, 25-7) win over Foxboro was Senior Night and all nine of the Bulldog seniors contributed to the big win. Amelia Poshkus, Ellie Teague, Avery Devoe and Sarojini Schutt combined for 22 kills while Shay Connolly, Lauren Brady and Julie Newton combined for 9 aces and 17 digs. Meghan Hartnett controlled the offence with 19 assists and Liz Korycanski, out all season due to injury, provided valuable emotional support!

The Week in Review- 10/21/13-10/26/13

Cheerleaders grab first place- The Cheerleading team didn't waste any time showing their best stuff this season as they took home first place in the first competition they have entered this year. The competition was a big one- the Braintree Invitational- and the squad performed incredibly well, outperforming some great competition.

Field Hockey earns League Title….Again- A league win and a tie was enough to propel the Field Hockey team to yet another Hock Davenport Championship this week. The week started off with a disapointing 1-1 tie at Foxboro which then forced the team to have to defeat Stoughton at home on Thursday night in order to clinch the title. But the girls did not disappoint, edging the Black Knights on two Kellie Stigas goals, 2-1. Friday saw the team tie Westwood, 3-3 in an offense-filled non-league contest to end the season. Stigas registered 2 goals and 1 assist in the competitive game.

Boys Soccer Qualifies for Tournament- A convincing 3-1 win over Foxboro on Tuesday night at home earned the Boys Soccer team a ticket to the State Tournament for the 8th consecutive season. The team followed up the Foxboro victory with a 2-0 road win over Stoughton to end the regular season on Friday afternoon. Bart O'Brien (1 goal, 3 assists), Damian Kozak (1 goal, 1 assist), Eric Wong (1 goal), 1 assist),  Andre Dorofeev (1 goal), and Liam Collins (1 goal) led the Bulldog attack this week. The team finishes the regular season with a record of 9-6-3 and was unbeaten at home.

Volleyball improves to 15-2- The Volleyball kept things going this week with 3-0 wins over Sharon and Stoughton. The team will look to finish off the regular season on a five game winning streak as they face Quincy and Foxboro this week.

XC Girls finish 2nd in Davenport at XC championship meet- The Girls XC team raced very well in Saturday's Hock Championship meet, finishing 2nd in the Davenport and 6th overall with a score of 202. Catherine Song finished first for the girls while Courtland Priest finished 1st for the Bulldogs in the Boys race.

Riemer qualifies for States- Senior Sam Riemer shot an incredible 74 at Easton CC in Monday's Sectional Golf Tournament qualifying for the State Tournament Monday for the 3rd year in a row.

Football strong early but falters- The Football team battled hard against unbeaten Oliver Ames Saturday but fell to the Tigers in the final Hock Davenport game of the season. The big Bulldog highlight of the game was a 70 yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Derrick Harris. The team will find out the remainder of its schedule on Monday.

Girls Soccer falls in only game of week- It was a light week for the Girls Soccer team as a rescheduled contest with Stoughton left just one game on the schedule and the team came out flat on the road against the Warriors, falling 1-0. The team will face the Black Knights on Monday at home at 5:45 in senior night.

Teams and Clubs shine in first annual CHS Showcase

Practices and games were put on hold Wednesday evening for the first annual CHS Showcase- a night where Middle School aged parents and their kids as well as some even younger Cantonites visited the CHS gymnasium to see what our athletic teams, clubs and other extra-curricular offerings are all about.

Team and club leaders worked with their coaches and advisers to create displays which "showcased" their sport or activity. Hundreds of younger Canton students and parents visited throughout the evening- not bad considering the Red Sox were playing in game one of the World Series! Our Bulldog nation put on a great show that really highlighted who we are and what it can mean to be a Bulldog!

Field Hockey adds to already crowded trophy case

A come-from-behind 2-1 victory over visiting Stoughton Thursday night at home was enough to propel the Field Hockey team to yet another Hock Davenport Championship. It was also Senior Recognition Night and the seniors did not disappoint as parents and fans alike were treated to a great game.
The Bulldogs went down 1-0 early when a Black Knight found a gap and broke through the Canton defense. Canton goaltender Emily Buckley made a great first save but the persistent Stoughton player followed up with a goal off of the rebound.
The game remained scoreless throughout the first half, but early in the 2nd, Kellie Stigas scored off of a corner and just 6 minutes later Stigas converted on yet another corner.
The team will face Westwood in a non-league game this afternoon before beginning preparation for the DI state tournament.

The Week in Review- 10/15-10/19/13

Boys and Girls Soccer raise awareness of Breast Cancer- Both the Boys and Girls Soccer teams sported their pink jerseys in Thursday's double-header with Sharon this week.  Thanks go out to all of the parent volunteers who helped make the event possible.  Kudos to the boys and girls players for their efforts.

Field Hockey continues to roll- Wins over Oliver Ames and Sharon have put the Field Hockey team on the brink of yet another Hock Davenport Championship. The 1-0 win over OA on the road Tuesday was a battle of the Davenport's two best teams. The Bulldog victory was sweet revenge as the Tigers had beaten the Bulldogs by the same score earlier in the season. Katie Kelleher recorded the lone goal in the victory.

The 'dogs dominated Sharon on the road on Friday, 5-1 on a hat trick and 2 assists by Kellie Stigas. The victory moves the team one step closer to a Davenport Championship with 2 games left.

Volleyball wins Davenport for 7th season in a row- The week started off with a bang for the Volleyball team as the squad breezed by Milford on Tuesday with a 3-0 (25-14, 25-8, 25-15) win that led to the team's 7th straight Hock Title. The week also ended on a high note as the team hosted Oliver Ames and came away with yet another Hock victory, 3-1. Sandwiched in between the two Hock victories was a clash of two of the top D2 teams in the state as the Bulldogs hosted Notre Dame Academy, the top ranked team in the state. The 'dogs started off strong early in the first game, but the visitors had too many weapons on the day and served up Canton's second loss of the season, 0-3. Avery Devoe led a strong Bulldog effort in the loss but it wasn't enough to overcome the top ranked squad.

Boys Soccer has unbeaten week...but no wins- The Boys Soccer team played to two scoreless ties this week- one against unbeaten Oliver Ames and one against Sharon- a team that had defeated the Bulldogs earlier in the season. The two ties mark the team's 6th shutout in the past 8 games but also mark the 3rd game in a row without a goal. Art McNally earned his 7th shutout of the season. The team  has to earn just one more point in its final two games to qualify for the state tournament for the 8th consecutive season.

Football jumps ahead early again, but can't hold on- For the 3rd consecutive game, the Bulldogs found the endzone first to jump ahead of their Hock opponent, this time the Foxboro Warriors, but failed to hold on as the Warriors came storming back for a 28-7 victory. Kevin Wing's 2 yard run capped off an early drive that was highlighted by a huge passing play when Brian Hagan threw a perfect strike to Derek Harris who made a great catch in traffic and tacked on some extra yardage putting the 'dogs in a great position early. The team moved the ball well for much of the game but the Warriors were able to convert on their opportunities and earned the road win.

Golfers perform well at Hock Championships- Junior Mike Breviglia shot a 78 at the Hock Championships at Granite Links on Thursday, becoming the first Bulldog golfer in recent memory to shoot the lowest score in the League- earning MVP honors on the day. His teammate Sam Hrubec shot the 2nd lowest score (an 80- tied with 2 other golfers). The team finished in 2nd place to Sharon High School. The team will compete in the State Tournament on Monday at Easton CC.

Girls Soccer wins 1 drops 2 in tough week of competition- The Girls Soccer team had a convincing 3-0 victory at home on Thursday night against Sharon. Gabby Matthews, Sarah MacQuarrie and Hannah Link each scored in the shutout win. Alana Murphy played well in goal. Thursday's victory was sandwiched by two tough losses- 3-0 to Oliver Ames and 1-0 to a very strong Andover team.

Field Hockey, Volleyball and Girls Soccer all in Globe Top 20s

There are a few things that Cantonites seem to be able to rely on each fall- the leaves will turn colors and fall, there will be two big local road races, and the Girls sports teams at CHS will be thriving. This year has been no exception. Once again, the Field Hockey, Volleyball and Girls Soccer teams are all excelling, collectively posting a record of 33 wins, 6 ties and 5 losses.

The Volleyball team clinched its 7th consecutive Hock Title this week in winning the Davenport with time to spare.

Field Hockey is currently in control of its own destiny and needs to win another game in the league to sure up yet another League title.

Girls Soccer is right on the heals of Oliver Ames with 2 games remaining and will look to win out to put pressure on the Tigers.

The Boston Globe has noticed the success of the Lady Dogs this fall, ranking all three in their Top 20 rankings:

Brevigila earns Hock Golf Championship MVP

CHS junior Mike Breviglia shot a 78 at Thursday's Hock Golf Championships at Granite Links in Quincy, 2 shots lower than the closest competitor earning the Hock Golf Championship MVP.  His teammate, Sam Hrubec was one of 3 golfers who shot an 80 on the day.

One win, One loss in Davenport First Place battles

The Field Hockey team exacted some revenge on Tuesday with a 1-0 over Oliver Ames after falling to the Tigers by the same score earlier in the season. The win pushed the Bulldogs 2 points ahead of the Tigers in the race for the Hock Davenport Championship. Canton's goal came when Lindsay Nolte made an incredible run up the entire field and found Katie Kelleher in front of the Tiger goal for the tally.

The Girls Soccer team fell 3-0 to OA in yet another battle for first place on Tuesday. The Bulldogs went into the contest with a one point lead over the Tigers but the loss puts them one point behind with just 3 league games remaining.

Volleyball earns Davenport Title- 7th Hock Championship in a row

The Volleyball team cruised to its 7th consecutive Hock Title with a 3-0 (25-14, 25-8, 25-15) victory over Milford on the road Tuesday. It was a great team effort with Amelia Poshkus, Chidera Nwankwo and Ellie Teague playing particularly well at the net and Danielle Arthur serving superbly.

The Win improves the team's record to 12-1 and earns the Hock Davenport once again!

The week in Review- 10/7-10/11/13The GThe Bo

Field Hockey rolls- This week's wins over KP (4-2), Mansfield (2-0) and Milford (5-0) made it 7 wins in-a-row for the Field Hockey team as they seem to be peaking at the right time.
The 5 goal explosion by the Bulldogs at home Friday featured goals by Julianna Howlett, Alex Dillon, Jackie Merrigan, Kellie Stigas, and Sam Nolte. Mary McNeil and Zoe Rosenberg were key to the victory as well.  The team will face first place Oliver Ames on the road Tuesday in a battle for first place in the Davenport.

Girls Soccer stays hot- The Girls Soccer team improved to 9-1-3 and qualified for the state tournament this week with wins over KP, Mansfield and Milford. Friday afternoon saw the team defeat visiting Milford, 5-2 on goals by Kim McNally (2), Haylee Duserick, Sam Sullivan and Sarah MacQuarrie. The team will face Oliver Ames at home on Tuesday in a battle for Davenport bragging rights.

Volleyball wins two but drops first match of season- The Volleyball team went 2-1 this week, defeating  Medway and Mansfield (two very powerful teams), but dropping its first match of the season to KP in a dramatic 5-game match. Coach Cawley praised the play of Avery Devoe, Liz Hamilton, Ellie Teague, Chidera Nwankwo and Erin Proctor in the big rebound win over Mansfield on Thursday.

Girls Cross Country finish dual meet season at 4-1- The Girls XC team wrapped up the dual meet season with an impressive victory over Stoughton, 22-35. The win improves the team's record to 4-1 with the one loss coming at the hands of the always strong Oliver Ames Tigers.

Boys Soccer knocks off K-R 1st place Mansfield- Wednesday saw the Boys Soccer team shutout Kelley-Rex leading Mansfield 4-0 on goals by Wolph Gustave (2), Damian Kozak and Pat Hession (first career). The good spirit of the win was tempered by two tough losses this week- 1-3 at KP and 0-2 at Milford.

Golf team ends regular season with 2-1 week- The Golf team posted two great scores that would have been enough to defeat Wednesday's opponent Oliver Ames, BUT those two scores came on the wrong days as they shot a 158 against undefeated OA falling 158-157. The Bulldogs shot 152 and 153 against Foxboro and Mansfield respectively, in two big wins and finish the regular season at 10-4.

Football strikes first but can't hold on vs. Stoughton- Brian Hagan's first quarter touchdown pass to Michael Harris opened up the scoring of Friday's first-ever non-Turkey-day rivalry with Stoughton, but the 'dogs were unable to ride that momentum for long. Hagan would score in the 3rd quarter as well but that was all the scoring that the team could muster, falling 40-13 at the hands of the Black Knights, who were looking to instill some revenge after falling the Bulldogs last Thanksgiving. The team will host Foxboro on Friday night at 7:00pm.

Amazing string of Volleyball success comes to an end

Tuesday night's 3-2 loss to KP ended an amazing regular season winning streak that spans back three seasons. The last regular season loss was on 10/27/11. Since then, the team won 32 straight regular season games before losing to the Warriors.

The streak came to an end Tuesday as the squad, coming off one of the best wins of the year Monday night vs. Medway, went up two games to none against KP, but the Warriors came storming back, winning the next three for the upset win (25-20, 25-18, 11-25, 24-26, 12-15).

Congratulations go out to Coach Cawley and the girls of 2011, 12, and 13 on the great achievement.

The week in review- 9/30/13-10/4/13

Perfect week for girls and boys soccer- This week saw the boys and girls soccer team each go 2-0 vs. Stoughton and Taunton. The Girls team kept in the hunt for the Davenport title chase with a 2-0 win at Stoughton on Tuesday and a 2-1 victory at Taunton on Friday. Freshman Hannah Link scored both goals in the Stoughton win and senior Kim McNally scored both goals in the win over Taunton. The team is currently ranked 13th in the Boston Globe poll.

The Boys dug themselves out of a tough stretch, defeating the Black Knights, 2-0 and the Tigers 3-0, both at home. The shutouts make it 3 games in a row without the team conceding a goal. Bart O'Brien scored 3 of the 5 goals this week.

Field Hockey with shutout week- The Field Hockey squad defeated Stoughton, 3-0 on Tuesday and followed it up with a 2-0 win at Taunton on Thursday. Thursday's win at Taunton featured goals by Kellie Stigas and Katie Kelleher with an assist by Jackie Merrigan.

Volleyball team remains perfect and continues to improve- 3-0 victories over Stoughton and Taunton improved the Girls Volleyball record to 9-0. Thursday's victory over Taunton was led by Avery Devoe (16 kills and 3 aces), Elizabeth Hamilton (14 kills, 4 aces and hit .423) and Erin Proctor (28 assists). The team is currently ranked 13th in the latest Boston Globe poll.

Football heroic comeback ends in disappointment- A mistake ridden first three quarters had the football team down 35-13 against visiting Milford on Friday night at CHS, but anyone who left early missed all of the drama and excitement as the Bulldogs fought back to score three unanswered touchdowns to tie it a 35 a-piece. A Hawk 23 yard field goal as the clock ran down ended up dashing the hopes of turning the comeback into a victory as the game ended 38-35 Milford.

Brian Hagan put the Bulldogs up early on a 1 yard run in the 1st quarter, but Milford would score the next 21 points before Hagan scored again midway through the 3rd quarter to make it 21-13. But the Hawks once again took advantage of some 'dog mistakes and ended the quarter finding the Bulldog endzone two more times and putting the game seemingly out of reach for the home team. But someone forgot to tell the Bulldogs as they mounted an amazing comeback that featured touchdowns by Michael Harris, Kevin Wing and Jahron Reynolds (with just 2 minutes remaining), tying it up at 35-35. That flurry of Bulldog domination also included two Matt Bagley on-side-kicks recovered by the Green and White and some great play at quarterback by Anthony Ross. Hopes of the victory were dashed when the visiting Hawks had a good kickoff return and managed a couple of big passing plays to lead to a 23 yard field goal and the Milford win.

Up and Down week for Golf squad- This week saw the Golf team shoot an amazingly low score of 147 to defeat Sharon on Wednesday, 147-166, but shot much higher on Thursday, falling to first place Oliver Ames, 162-145. Wednesday's 147 was the lowest team score for the Bulldogs in recent memory. Sam Riemer, Sam Hrubec and Luke Thompson all shot 36 (one over par) in the big win.

XC teams battle Milford- Girls win, Boys come up short- The Girls team was once again led by Amanda Eagles, Courtney Loughnane and Catherine Song in an 18-42 victory while the Boys fell 33-24 but saw strong performances by Courtland Priest, Joe Clancy and Spencer Polsgrove.

Football set to host Milford in Davenport Battle

Both Milford and the Bulldogs will be in search of their first key Hock Davenport victory on Friday night at CHS as the two teams clash for the first time in recent history. The Hawks joined the Hockomock League in the fall of 2012 but the two Football teams did not face each other last year.

Kickoff is 6:00pm at CHS's WWII Veterans' Memorial Field. We are hoping for a big crowd!

Golf team continues impressive run

The Golf team increased its winning streak to 6 matches with a 147-166 victory over Sharon on Wednesday. The was extra-sweet as the Eagles had defeated the 'dogs early in the season. It also marked the 2nd time this season that the team has registered a sub-150 score- a very rare event in Hockomock Golf. The win over the Eagles saw three Bulldogs shoot an impressive one over par, 36- Sam Riemer, Sam Hrubec and Luke Thompson. Mike Breviglia also broke 40 in the victory.

The team will face 10-0 Oliver Ames today in a battle of two very hot golf teams.

Volleyball wins on and off the court

Monday saw the undefeated Volleyball team remain perfect with a 3-0 win (25-14, 25-19, 25-9) over Stoughton High School at CHS. The win improved the team's record to 8-0. Meghan Hartnett ran the offense well collecting 12 assists while Avery Devoe and Elizabeth Hamilton led the offense. Danielle Arthur, Shay Connolly, Lauren Brady, Olivia Devoe and Julie Newton played great defense in the Davenport victory. The win also means that the team's record over the past two seasons is an incredible 29-1.

The team won off the court on Monday as well as they organized and dedicated their match to the Volley for Molly- a foundation set up to help fight ovarian cancer. The team and parents deserve a great deal of praise for their effort to raise money and awareness of this terrible disease.

This week's Bulldog Highlights- 9/23-9/28/13

Volleyball remains Perfect- It was a perfect 3-0 week for the Volleyball team as they defeated OA, Sharon and Foxboro to sure up Hock Davenport dominance. The team lost only 2 games in the 3 matches and continued to improve. Avery Devoe continued her dominating play with great performances also being put in by Elizabeth Hamilton, Erin Proctor, Ellie Teague and Meghan Hartnett.

Field Hockey rebounds from sole loss of season with two wins- After falling in a heartbreaker to first place OA last Friday, the Field Hockey team came back strong with two big Davenport wins this week. Julianna Howlett, Kellie Stigas, Alex Dillon, Mary Nee, Jackie Merrigan, Kelsey Trerice (first career goal), and Emily Buckley (first career goal) each scored goals in a 7-0 win over Sharon on Wednesday.   The team then edged out Foxboro on Thursday, 1-0 on an early goal by Stigas.

Golfers on a roll- qualify for States-  The Golf team made it 5 straight wins with three big results this week. The team has been on fire, shooting many consecutive sub-155 rounds- a very impressive feat in high school golf. This week's wins were even more impressive considering that 2 of the 3 were on away courses. The team traveled to Hopedale CC to face Milford on Monday and earned a 154-162 win. Tuesday saw the squad travel to Easton CC to face Stoughton- another 154 day led to a convincing win over the Black Knights. Back at home at Blue Hills CC on Thursday, the team shot even better, downing the visiting NA Red Rocketeers, 151-176. Sam Riemer, Sam Hrubec, Mike Breviglia, Brian Halloran (even par 35 on Monday), and Luke Thompson all registered scores in the 30s during this week's matches.

Girls XC earns 2nd win of young season- Senior Amanda Eagles won Tuesday's XC race with Foxboro with a time of 22:06, leading the team to its second victory of season, 23-32, against just one loss. Courtney Loughnane finished 3rd overall in 22:41. Rounding out the top 5 for the Bulldogs were Julia Guerini, Michaela Kelly and Kerin Senett.  The Boys sqaud lost a close race, 25-30. Courtland Priest and Joe Clancy paced the Boys team in the effort.

Girls Soccer earns win and tie while boys struggle finding goals- The Girls Soccer team blanked Sharon on Monday, 2-0 and managed a 2-2 draw Friday night at home vs. Foxboro. The Boys team lost a heartbreaker 1-0 on Tuesday at Sharon on a goal in the final minutes of the game. Friday saw the squad play very well at Foxboro but were unable to find the back of the net, settling for a 0-0 draw. Senior  goalkeeper Art McNally earned his 2nd shutout of the season in the tie.

Football flurry at end of half, not enough to overtake Eagles- The Football team made quite a game of it on Saturday at defending Super Bowl Champion Sharon scoring 13 points in the closing minutes of the first half taking the momentum into the locker room down just 14-13, but the Eagles took over in the 2nd half, defeating the Bulldogs, 32-13.  Brian Hagan scampered into the endzone late in the half for the first Bulldog touchdown and Anthony Ross had an interception on the last play of the half, running it back for a 85 yard touchdown.

Twellman shares story of struggle with students and parents

Wednesday night's annual student-athlete parent night focused on the health and safety of our student athletes. More than 500 students and parents attended the evening which included presentations by CHS Athletic Director Danny Erickson, CHS Athletic Trainer Christina Butler, CHS Booster Club President Dave Merrigan and former professional soccer player Taylor Twellman.

The featured speaker of the evening was Twellman- former New England Revolution and US Mens National Soccer team star- the quickest player in MLS history to score 100 goals. Unfortunately, his career was cut short due to repeated concussions. Twellman shared his story of success, injury, frustration, depression and perseverance. His message to our students was to enjoy their playing time but to always be honest when it comes to head injury. You can find more information at Twellman's foundation's website- thinktaylor.org.

Erickson's message dealt with the importance of communication when it comes to the difficult issue of student athlete playing time. He implored student athletes, coaches and parents to keep the lines of communication open on this emotional issue. Here are links to two related articles penned by Erickson over the past couple of years. Playing Time....Communication....

Merrigan made a compelling argument for why families should become members in the CHS Athletic Booster Club and get involved. Join today!

Butler focussed on educating the audience on the various roles that a high school athletic trainer performs to keep our athletes safe and healthy. She also highlighted some areas where parents and the athletes themselves can help in this important task. Check out some recent articles written by Butler on some important health/safety issues-  Hydration....Game Day Nutrition...Shin Pain Tips...

Thanks to all who attended. Please send us an email with your thoughts and suggestions on the presentation. ericksond@cantonma.org.

This week's Bulldog Highlights- 9/16 thru 9/21

Golf Team posts two best scores of season- The Golf team bounced back from a midweek loss to Franklin to post its two best scores of the season in wins over Milford and Attleboro at Blue Hills CC on Thursday and Friday. Friday was the team follow up a season low 149 Thursday with an impressive 154 on Friday in a big win over Attleboro. Brian Halloran (36), Mike Breviglia (39), Luke Thompson (39), and Sage Lee (40) led the way to Friday's victory just as the same four players had done the day before.

Volleyball stays perfect- Avery Devoe was dominant in two big Hock victories for the unbeaten Volleyball team this week.  Monday's 3-1 road win over traditional powerhouse Franklin was the highlight of the week. The team also blanked Oliver Ames on Thursday, 3-0.

Girls Soccer picks up 5 out of 6 possible points- Team captains Kim McNally (3 goals) and Hailee Duerick (1 goal and 1 assist) led the Girls Soccer team to a big unbeaten week which was highlighted by a 2-1 victory over unbeaten and defending State Champion Franklin on Monday.

Football edged in home opener- It was a back and forth contest at CHS's Veteran's Memorial Field on Friday night for the Football home opener with Quincy. The 'Dogs came from behind twice- once in each half to force OT at 14-14. However, OT did not go well for the home side as the visiting Presidents scored quickly and the Bulldogs' hopes of forcing double OT were dashed by a Quincy interception.  Kevin Wing and Brian Hagan scored touchdowns for the Bulldogs and freshman Thomas Monagle added two extra-points.

Boys Soccer wins first league game of season- Wednesday saw the Boys Soccer team win its first league game of the season, 2-1 over Milford in dramatic fashion. The Bulldogs led for most of the game on a Liam Collins first half goal- the first of his career. However, the Hawks scored the tying goal with just 4 minutes remaining. The Bulldogs came right back and a beautify strike by freshman Sam Papakonstantino won the game for the home team. The win was sandwiched by two tough losses.

Cross Country teams run well but fall to powerhouse OA- Amanda Eagles finished first for Canton (3rd overall), with a time of 20:46. Catherine Song was 4th overall (21:11). The Girls top five were rounded out by Courtney Loughnane, Kerin Sennett and Julia Guerini.  The Boys were led by Courtland Priest (19:07), Joe Clancy (19:33), Daniel Brooks, Dan Bronstein and Matt Derbin.

Four Golfers break 40 in big home win

Coach Mike Barucci couldn't remember the last time the CHS Golf team broke the elusive 150 score at home but the team stepped up and did it on Thursday at Blue Hills CC vs. Milford, defeating the Hawks, 149-176. Seeing 4 scored below 40 on the same day is a rarity in Hockomock golf and is a huge accomplishment for the Bulldogs.

Mike Breviglia- 37, Brian Halloran- 37, Luke Thompson- 37, and Sage Lee- 38 combined for the incredible score.

52 Bulldog Captains attend Hock Captains Conference

Some Bulldog Captains at today's Conference

Canton High School's 52 captains attended today's Hockomock League Captains Conference in Wrentham.  The annual event brings the captains of all of the sports from each of the 12 schools together for a day of getting to know one another and leadership training.  The topic of focus today was on the courage to be a leader. Several group activities kept the student athletes on their toes and reflecting on what it takes to be an effective leader. The highlight of the day was our guest speaker- Ed Gerety who shared a message of leadership, gratitude and courage.
It is safe to say that our captains are even more prepared to lead our teams today than these capable young men and women were before this wonderful event.

Student Athlete Parent Night- September 25th at 6:30pm

The Canton High School Athletic Department is hosting an evening for student athletes and parents on Wednesday, September 25th from 6:30-8:00pm in the CHS Auditorium. Attendance is required of any student who is currently playing or planning on playing a sport this school year. Students are asked to be accompanied by at least one parent/guardian.

The evening will provide an overview of Bulldog Athletics as we head into the 2013-14 school year. The focus of the evening will be on student athlete health and safety.

CHS Athletic Trainer, Christina Butler will be discussing the programs in place here which help ensure the health and safety of our student athletes. She will also present some ideas for how parents can help us with this important task.

Former New England Revolution and US Mens National team star Taylor Twellman will be our keynote speaker. As a result of multiple concussions, Twellman was forced to retire from his professional soccer career years before he had planned. His story is eye opening for both student athletes and parents.

Varsity Football Scrimmage Time Change

The varsity football scrimmage at Whitman-Hanson on Friday evening has been pushed up to a 4:15pm kickoff.

When one door closes...

Late August is always a very exciting time around a high school athletic department and Canton High School is no exception. This is the time of year when our fall sports season kicks off and our student athletes are readying to get back to school and to the fields.

As I get closer to 3 decades of working in the CHS Athletic Department, I have seen countless examples of student athletes getting cut from one sport, only to go out for another and realize that they had a talent that they had never recognized before. Our Cross Country team is currently still accepting new-comers at practice. Who knows, maybe the next great distance runner at CHS had been an aspiring Field Hockey, Soccer or Volleyball player. Who knows, maybe it's you.
