CHS Wrestling Community Gathers to Honor Coach Bartosek

The CHS Wrestling Community came together on Wednesday night to honor legendary former coach Tom Bartosk with the official dedication of the new CHS wrestling mat in his name.  The Bulldogs then faced off against Oliver Ames in the first ever match wrestled on the new mat.

Coach Bartosek is the Father of Wrestling in Canton. The long-time Science teacher at the Galvin Middle School and at Canton High School, brought his deep love of the sport to CHS by beginning a team at CHS in the 1990s. Bartosek founded the Bulldog Wrestling program and developed it to be a great program before retiring in 2010.

It wasn't the titles that were ever important to coach Bartosek- it was the journey.  It was the growth of his athletes. It was his special ability to take a young man (or women) who had not been able to find "their thing" and help them recognize it and develop it.  He truly made a difference- a hugely positive difference- in the lives of hundreds of young people from our school and town.

The official dedication- (l-r) CHS Wrestling captains- Justin
Dickie, Nick Matt, School Committee Chair Mike Loughran,
Principal Derek Folan, coach Brian Caffelle, coach Tom
Bartosek, coach Tye Seastedt, EM Duggan CEO Vin Petroni,
and Athletic Director Danny Erickson.
Last winter, EM Duggan- a local contracting company- made a very generous donation of a new wrestling mat and it was clear to everyone that the mat should be dedicated in coach Bartosek's honor.

The gym was packed on Wednesday, with dozens of former wrestlers and parents joining scores of fans of this year's team in watching coach Bartosek be present for the official mat opening.

The Bulldogs came up just short in the match, falling 39-33 (just their first defeat of the season) but the night was a huge success.

Chabot Takes Reigns of Girls Lacrosse Program

The CHS Athletic Department is pleased to officially announce the hiring of Laurie Chabot as our new Head Girls Varsity Lacrosse Coach.

Coach Laurie Chabot
Chabot takes the reigns from coach Chrissy O'Connor, who has coached the Girls Lacrosse team for the past two seasons but has moved on to focus solely on leading the CHS Field Hockey program. Chabot joined the CHS coaching staff this past fall as our Junior Varsity Girls Soccer Coach but her true love is Lacrosse.

Chabot has many years of coaching high school sports, including many seasons of lacrosse. She has served as Head Girls Lacrosse coach at the Wheeler School in Providence, RI.  She has served in assistant roles at all of the follow schools- Thayer Academy, Beaver Country Day, Regis College and Rhode Island College. She also served as Thayer Academy's Head Girls Soccer coach until joining the Bulldog staff this past fall.

Joining the Bulldog Girls Lacrosse staff has been a longtime goal of Chabot's. "I am extremely honored and excited to be joining the Canton High School Girls Lacrosse program," stated Chabot.  "I have worked very hard over the past 13 years to build other programs and I am so excited to be back in my hometown. I look forward to seeing what lies ahead."

Chabot resides in Canton with her husband and 5 children.  She can often be found at youth sports venues all year round. CHS is happy to have her leading our Girls Lacrosse Program. Welcome coach Chabot!

Turkey Day- Proud to be a Bulldog

There is nothing quite like it anywhere.  High School Thanksgiving rivalry games, like the one we have been playing with Stoughton High School for the past 92 years, bring two communities together each year to celebrate all that is great about high school sports.  It's not about a season championship or any individual honors.  It's about your town, school, family and doing your best in representing all of them- with all of the community behind you and watching you.  It's about tradition and pride and friends, families and even foes.
2017 Thanksgiving Day victors- The Canton Bulldogs
As CHS Athletic Director, I get a pretty good view of the game each November from the sidelines. I have watched many years of both Black Knights and Bulldogs hoist the Turkey Day trophy high above their heads and each one of those post-game moments leaves a lasting impression on me.  This year, watching our boys run to grab the trophy from me and dance around it as a team was a very proud moment. I'm proud of our kids and coaches. This moment- a big upset win- represented all of their hard work and commitment.  They made their town proud. It was also awesome to see so many of the Canton players and Stoughton players and coaches talking to each other after the game. Canton boys were tapping their foes on their helmets telling them to keep their heads up while Black Knights were congratulating the Bulldogs on what was a very impressive victory.  This bitter rivalry didn't feel bitter at all after the game.  Just two teams of dozens of players and coaches, having just fought for their towns, reflecting on all that work and the journey of their season.  Pretty cool moment and one that shouldn't be lost on all of us. Kudos to Head coaches Dave Bohane and Greg Burke- you have both clearly lead your boys and coaches to this moment.

Congratulations to our Bulldogs on a 27-0 victory over the Black Knights on Thanksgiving Day- November 23, 2017.  Congrats to Stoughton on a great season and for being worthy adversaries. We can all look forward to doing it all again next November- for the 93rd time.

Happy Thanksgiving.

Riley Brown signs NLI to play Field Hockey at Merrimack

Canton High School's Athletic Department is happy to report that CHS senior, Riley Brown, signed her National Letter of Intent to play Field Hockey at Merrimack College in a brief signing ceremony held at CHS on Monday.

Brown was joined by her parents, Scott and Colleen, CHS Field Hockey coaches Chrissy O'Connor and Dave Wheeler, CHS principal Derek Folan, CHS Athletic Director Danny Erickson and CHS Wrestling coach Brian Caffelle.

Brown played a huge part in the successful 2017 Bulldog Field Hockey campaign, minding the Canton goal with an aggressive, tenacious, positive attitude all season.  She posted an impressive 1.09 goals against average this fall- helping to lead her team to a final record of 16-4-1 and an appearance in the D1 South Sectional Semi-Final.  She was named to the Hockomock League All-Star team in recognition of the amazing season. She has been the starting goaltender for the Bulldogs for both her junior and senior season.

Brown joins a long list of Bulldog athletes to move on to play at the collegiate level. Check in on this blog for more college news on the class of 2018 as the year moves on.

Girls Soccer game CANCELED

The Girls Soccer game scheduled with Andover on Monday, October 30th and originally postponed to Today- Tuesday, October 31st, has been cancelled. The game will not be made up. The cancelation is due to damage caused in Andover by Sunday night's storm.

The Bulldog's next action will be in the State Tournament. The team will be seeded based on a regular season record of 10-5-2. Watch this blog for updates!

MIAA Tourney Info- Field Hockey, Boys & Girls Soccer- Updated 11-10-17

Field Hockey- Our Bulldogs were seeded #4 in the MIAA D1 South tournament.  They defeated #13 Dartmouth at home on Saturday, 2-1. They then advanced to the Sectional Semi with a thrilling 3-2 win over #12 seeded Barnstable on Monday night. The excitement of that Quarter-Final game was eclipsed by the Semi-Final game at #1 seeded, undefeated Somerset-Berkley on Wednesday night. After battling the top-seeded team to a 2-2 regulation time tie, the 'dogs season came to an abrupt end on a goal by S-B minutes into OT.  It was a tremendous game. The team finished their season with a record of 16-4-1

Boys Soccer- Our Bulldogs were seeded #8 and hosted #9 seeded Foxboro in the first round but they were defeated 4-1 by the Warriors. They finished their season at 10-5-4.

Girls Soccer- Our Bulldogs were seeded #10 in the MIAA D2 South Girls Soccer Tournament and fell 3-0 to Holliston in the first round. They finished the season with a record of 10-6-2.

Field Hockey wins Davenport!

A key road tie at Foxboro and a big home win over Stoughton this week propelled the Field Hockey team to its first Davenport Title since 2013. The Stoughton game wrapped up the regular season with the team posting an impressive record of 14-3-1.

The MIAA state tournament seedings will be announced on Monday and the Bulldogs are looking to get a very high seed in the D1South bracket.

Late October Status Update

As all of our fall Bulldog teams head into the tail end of their seasons, here is an update of how our varsity squads are doing.

Golf- The Golf team may have a better winning percentage than any other Bulldog program over the past several years and this fall season certainly saw this group rise to the top.  The team went unbeaten in the Davenport and posted a 13-1 regular season record en-route to a Davenport Championship. The team also repeated as first place finishers in the Hockomock Championship Golf meet- held this past Thursday at Blue Hills Country Club. The team is headed into MIAA tournament play this Monday at Eason CC.

Boys and Girls Cross Country-  Both the Boys and Girls XC teams have shown great grit, determination and improvement this season. Both teams went 2-3 in the Hockomock dual meet season. The teams are now preparing for the Hock Championship meet and the MIAA divisional meet coming up in the next couple of weeks. This group has also exhibited amazing togetherness and unity throughout the entire season.

Unified Basketball- The Unified Basketball season starts up a bit later than the rest of the fall sports so it's still early, but all signs are pointing towards great things as the team is 2-0 in its first two games- a home victory over Milford and a road win at Westwood.

Cheerleading- Our Cheer squad has been working hard all fall in both working on their competition routine and performing their game routines. The payoff comes in the coming weeks as the girls will compete at the Hock Championship meet, a Braintree Invite and then hopefully the Sectionals/States.

Football- Friday night's loss at Davenport Champion North Attleboro eliminated this gutsy group from playoff contention. The team's 2-5 record certainly does not reflect the type of season they have had. Had the results turned out differently in any of three early season heartbreaking losses (16-17 to Scituate, 19-21 to Milford, and an OT defeat to Foxboro) the Bulldogs could be heading to the playoffs for the first time in recent memory. The team will play in a 3-game mini-season for the next three weeks before hosting rival Stoughton on Thanksgiving Day.

Field Hockey- The Field Hockey squad looks to have returned to their glory days with an amazing run this season. Their 13-3 mark thus far has them sitting atop the Davenport division of the Hockomock.  A victory or tie against 2nd place Foxboro on Monday ensures the Bulldogs at least a share of the Davenport crown. Failing to get a result at Foxboro on Monday will push the decision of who will be Davenport Champs until the final game of the season against Stoughton on Wednesday.

Volleyball- An amazing ten-year run of consecutive Hockomock Championships has come to a close this fall as the Bulldogs find themselves in a fight to qualify for the state tournament.  The team has showed amazing grace and character during this challenging season- while still playing some great volleyball.  The team has 4 matches remaining and must win-out to qualify. If anyone has it in them, it's this scrappy group of hard working student athletes.

This team- in particular- also always goes above and beyond off the court. This fall they have shown amazing social consciousness and leadership in participating in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Event and organizing "Dig X"- a match dedicated to classmate Xavier Machuga who is battling back from a major medical incident.

This season also saw coach Pat Cawley- Bulldog legend- get her due as she was inducted into the Mass Girls Volleyball Coaches Association Hall of Fame. Congrats Coach!

Boys Soccer- The Boys Soccer team has a record of 8-4-3 and qualified for the state tournament for the 2nd year in-a-row and for the 11th season in the past 12 with two big Davenport wins this past week- 4-3 over Milford and 2-1 over Sharon. The team has an outside chance a earning a Davenport Championship but they will need to win-out and get some help. The team is unbeaten at home to this point in the season.

Girls Soccer-  The Girls soccer team has nearly an identical record to the Boys at this point- 8-4-2 and they sit in 2nd place in the Hockomock Davenport Division. They qualified for the state tournament with big wins this week over Milford (3-0) and Sharon (4-2). The team travels to Hingham tonight to face a strong Notre Dame Academy squad- a great pre-tournament test.

Volley for X

This Friday, the Volleyball matches (Freshmen, JV and Varsity) being held at CHS between the Bulldogs and the Taunton Tigers, will feature a fundraiser for Xavier Machuga and his family. Xavier is a CHS student athlete who suffered a hemorraphic stroke this past May. He has been on the road to recovery ever since. (for more details, read the story in the Canton Citizen)

Our amazing Volleyball program always selects a match each year to help raise money to support an important cause. This year, they are raising money to help a classmate and his family.

Here is what you need to know:

Friday, October 6th- Frosh @ 3:30, JV @ 4:45 and Varsity @ 6:00pm.

At the CHS Masciarelli Gymnasium

There will be raffles for Bruins tickets, Revolution tickets, and basketball gift baskets. T-shirts will be sold. There will be a bake sale, snacks and pizza.

Help Volleyball help a fellow Bulldog!

So proud of these girls!

Changes to Soccer games at Sharon on 10/19

Due to Sharon High School's field lighting project being delayed, locations and times of our soccer games at Sharon have shifted on 10/19.

All four games will be played at 3:45pm

JV Girls- East Elementary School (45 Wilshire) Field #1
JV Boys- East Elementary School (45 Wilshire) Field #2

Varsity Boys- Stadium at SHS

Golf Improves to 6-0

Big shout out to the CHS Golf team who improved to 6-0 with a very impressive win vs. Sharon on Tuesday at Blue Hills CC, 139-173.

The Bulldogs have played consistently great golf during this first stretch of a half-dozen games en-route to a perfect record so far.

High School Golf 101- A match consists of 8 golfers from each school playing 9 holes. The best four scores from each team are added together and the lowest total score wins.  Even though the level of difficulty varies greatly from course to course, anytime players are breaking 40 is a good day.

So when I look at high school golf team scores, I look at any day under 160 as a great day. Check out the Bulldogs match scores so far this year:

Canton 155 at Milford 166
Canton 152 at Stoughton 185
Foxboro 166 at Canton 155
Canton 154 at NA 157
Milford 165 at Canton 156
Sharon 173 at Canton 139

Many great individual performances have led the Bulldogs to the successful start including Jack Goyetch (who shot a 1-under par in the Sharon win), Joey Vaughn, Danny Powers, Chris Lavoie, Niko Donovan and Bubba McNeice.

Check out details about the team at their website. Team is coached by Mike Barucci- who also designed and maintains their great team website!

Unified Basketball ready for fall-winter season!

The Canton High School Athletic Department and the CHS Student Services Department are happy to announce the return of a Unified Basketball team for the 2017 Fall/Winter Season.

Special Olympics Project Unify is an education-based project, funded by the US Dept. of Education, that uses the sports and education programs of Special Olympics to activate young people across the US. In order to promote school communities where all young people are agents of change- fostering respect, dignity and advocacy for people with disabilities.  Canton High School and Special Olympics believe that through sports young people can make a difference in friendships, schools and communities.

The Unified Basketball program is scheduled to begin the week of October 9th.  There will be roughly 1-2 practices each week with approximately 4-6 games. The team will ultimately be made up of both student with and without disabilities.  Our hope is to continue to strengthen our inclusive community and help develop new friendships and meaningful learning experiences for all students.

Any student interested in joining the Unified Basketball team should have his/her parent register them online by visiting the CHS Athletics Website.  Registration info is right in the middle column.

Is it kind? Is it honest? Does it improve the situation?

Over 600 CHS student athletes and parents attended our 2017 Bulldog Athletics Kick-Off Presentation on Tuesday night, September 12th.  The night included some important information regarding the athletic department, an appeal from the CHS Booster Club to become a member, a powerful message from our guest speaker and a challenge from our principal.

The highlight of the evening was a 30-minute story shared by our guest speaker- Aaron Polansky.  Polansky's message to our student athletes was clear- you are powerful and have the ability to make the CHS community a better place.  Beyond his emotional story, he provided a clear and strong set of three questions that he suggested we use to make our daily decisions---- 1. Is it kind?  2. Is it honest?  3. Will it improve the situation?  Three simple questions that can help us all make our school a better place.  Polansky clearly made a huge impact on much of the audience.  In an effort to "make it stick," Polansky kindly left a banner with these questions on them that will be displayed proudly at the CHS entrance. (See photo.)

CHS principal, Derek Folan followed up Polansky with a challenge to all of our student athletes. He challenged the hundreds of CHS student athletes to take their role in strengthening school culture seriously.  He praised all of their hard work and asked them to spread that Championship Mindset throughout the school.

The evening ended with a very special message from Mike Smith- from the HarborTV.  Smith visited CHS last December where he made a HUGE impact on the student body.  Last winter, his message of kindness and inclusiveness was powerful and impactful. (See blog entry about his last visit).

Click here for a short video message that Mike taped to close our presentation on Tuesday.  It is a challenge to CHS student athletes, captains and parents as they head into the 2017-18 school year.

Go Bulldogs.

Clarification of Attendance Rule

I'm afraid I was not very clear with my explanation of the attendance rule- the 5-Period rule at Tuesday night's presentation. Hopefully this can clear it up.

Student athletes must be in school in order to participate in athletics in the afternoon/evening. In order to be considered "in school," a student must be in school for AT LEAST the final 5 periods of the day. If a student athlete leaves school during the day due to an illness or other reason, he/she is NOT eligible to participate that day. HOWEVER, if a student has a scheduled doctor/dentist appointment that requires the student be dismissed for a portion of the school day, that will be considered excused and the student WILL be eligible to participate that day.

Remember- always bring a not from the doctor/dentist when returning to school.

Football win on Cravens Night highlights great opening week for CHS Athletics

The 2017-18 CHS Athletic season kicked off this past week with tons of great results for Bulldog fans.

Field Hockey is already 2-0 after convincing wins over Attleboro and a very strong Mansfield team.  Boys Soccer, Girls Soccer, and Volleyball each started off with big wins over Attleboro. Cross Country had many great performances in a loss at Nauset.

Friday night saw the Football team come flying out of the gates in the home opener against Pentucket Regional- jumping out to a 21-0 early in the first quarter and never looking back on their way to a 42-7 win. The game was a great community event- which saw hundreds of Canton residents and CHS students come out to watch the team and honor Bulldog legend Billy Cravens.  It was great to see the entire CHS band in the stands keeping the crowd going.  Hundreds of dollars were made to support ALS research.  A pre-game tailgate party was attended by more than 200 students and teachers to celebrate CHS student athlete Xavier Machuga's road to recovery.  It truly was a great example of our community coming together.

Proud Week to be a Bulldog!

The CHS Athletic Department will be kicking off the school year with an important meeting for student athletes and parents on Tuesday evening, September 12th at 7:00pm in the CHS Morse Auditorium.

We are thrilled to welcome our Keynote Speaker- Aaron Polansky- Superintendent of Old Colony Regional Vocational Technical High School and professional speaker.  Mr. Polansky will present on the theme of how our student athletes can take a leading role in creating a positive climate in a high school. Check out his website.
Guest Speaker- Aaron Polansky

Mr. Polansky's visit is made possible by the work of our CHS Athletic Booster Club. The Boosters- which is celebrating its 10th anniversary year, make opportunities like this possible. We hope that you will become a booster member today to help support programs like this and others in the future.

Attendance at the meeting is required of all CHS athletes (for all three seasons) and it is asked that each athlete is accompanied by a parent/guardian.  Parents will NOT be disappointed in taking the time to listen to Mr. Polansky's message. The meeting will run no more than 75 minutes. Please arrive early so we can get started and finish on time.

What we can learn from Jordan Speith's game

Thoughts from the AD-

Wow. That's about all I can say. Just finished watching Jordan Speith amaze on the back 9 at the final round of the British Open Golf Championship to earn his 3rd Major Championship just shy of his 24th birthday.

Speith is, by far, the professional golfer who I admire most.  Furthermore, he is the professional golfer from whom Bulldogs and athletes everywhere, can learn the most from on how to compete. I have been watching him closely since he sprung onto the scene in 2015, and I have seen one thing that separates him from all of his competitors--- He bounces back from his setbacks better than any professional athlete I have ever witnessed.

Speith is far from perfect.  He makes mistakes like all of us do. But it is how he bounces back from those mistakes that really shows us all of the importance of mentally moving on after setbacks. He has the ability to turn the switch and leave his mistakes behind him. He always seems to think forward and never dwells on his most recent setback. It is what makes him a champion and we can all learn from it.  Dr. Greg Dale, Director of Sport Psychology at Duke University, calls it the 3 second rule. Never allow yourself to think about a mistake on the playing field for more than 3 seconds. That mistake cannot drag you down if you don't let it.  Jordan Speith has obviously mastered the 3 second rule.

Today was amazing.  Speith started the day with a 3-shot lead over Matt Kuchar and he really struggled on the front 9- bogeying 4 holes while only recording 1 birdie. Those are not the scores that win you a Major Champion ship. But that wasn't the low point.  That came on the 13th hole where he hit his drive about 100 yards off target, had to use a shot on a drop and then scrambled for yet another bogey- dropping him out of 1st place for the first time this week. But then, like he has done so many times before, he bounced back- Big Time. He played the next 4 holes in 5-under par (birdie, eagle, birdie, birdie)- an unheard of feat- including a near hole-in-one on 14 and 2 giant one putts.  Twitter was blowing up that he was going to blow the tournament after the bogey on 13, but they underestimated his ability to play his best after a setback.  That is what he does. And it is what we should all learn from him.

This wasn't just today.  A couple other great examples:

2015 Masters- Final 2 rounds where far from perfect. He had 7 bogeys and a double-bogey, but he NEVER followed a bogey with a bogey and three times he followed up a bogey with a birdie or two.

2015 US OPEN- After a rough patch in the 3rd round where he went plus 5 in an 8 hole stretch, he rebounded to play his best golf- playing the next 23 holes in 3 under and earning his 2nd Major Championship.

Pretty amazing stuff. The kid gets better when the going gets rough.

As for our Bulldogs, there are few platforms in life that provide as many opportunities to react to mistakes, disappointment and loss than the high school athletic experience.  Not only are these a part of the game, but in high school athletics these setbacks are taking place in the public arena. It may not be in front of the world to see like Speith's venue, but, your friends, classmates, parents, teachers and community are all there witnessing your mistakes.  This fact certainly magnifies the impact that they have on you. When you experience failures and errors in most other areas of your life, they may not provide as powerful an opportunity to react and learn as when your mistakes are on exhibit for so many sets of eyes to see.   The significant social presence which high school athletics has, adds greatly to its long-lasting impact. Basically- learning how to react to mistakes and setbacks on the high school athletic fields can make a huge difference in how you grow as an adult.

So, I hope we can all take a page out of Jordan's playbook on how we need to leave the past in the past and always look forward to our next play.  That is the only one that counts.

In closing, I remember watching former President Jimmy Carter talk to a church group on the Sunday morning after he received a devastating cancer diagnosis. I wrote down the quote that stuck with me the most that day and I think it is an appropriate way to end this blog entry-

“So if you have a setback, accept it. Analyze how much of it is our fault and set a higher goal than you ever had before….and strive for that one.”
Jimmy Carter- 39th President of the United States
