Truncated Highlights from last week- Jan. 19-25, 2015

Not all teams checking in this week but some did have some good news to share:

Girls Basketball program showing signs of success- Girls freshmen have won 3 straight games, and JV has won 4 of their last 5.  Varsity continues to show improvement losing on a last second shot to Norton and challenging league leading Foxboro into the second half.  Gabby Kenefick continues her solid offensive performance this season (top 10 scorer in the Hock) and new comer, freshmen Hannah Jerrier has joined varsity with a bang, scoring her career highs of 7 points and 10 points in back to back games.  Emma Murphy and Meaghan Hunter have been very consistent throughout the last few games and Shannon Foley and Eileen Khoury have really lead the defensive side of the ball.

Girls Hockey extends unbeaten streak- The Girls Hockey team continued to show grit this week as a 1-1 tie with Medfield (a team with a 10-1 record) extended the team's unbeaten streak to five games. The Bulldog's lone goal was scored by Jackie Martin.  The team is certainly hitting it's stride at the right time of the season.

Boys Hockey with big win over L-S- The Boys Hockey annual match-up with Lincoln-Sudbury is usually a good barometer for measuring the potential of that year's Bulldog squad. So, a 6-2 Bulldog road win on Wednesday over L-S certainly raises the bar on where this year's squad can go. A great performance was put in by CHS net minder Justin Slocum turning away many L-S shots, but the story was the explosive scoring. Seamus Pecararo, Jim Jenkins, Brian Hagan, John Femia (2), Cian O'Mahoney (first career goal) each found the back of the L-S net in the huge win.

Highlights of the Week- Jan 10th-Jan 17th- 2015

Some great results for the Bulldogs this week!

Girls Hockey hitting their stride-   The girls hockey team finished up the first half of their season in very successful fashion. The squad recorded its first ever points in the highly competitive SEMGHL League Coastal Division with a 1-1 tie with perennial hockey power Hingham and a 3-1 victory over 2014 state semi finalist Sandwich.
The girl's success has come from their commitment to defense, the strong goaltending of Lindsey Nolte and Colleen Kelleher, plus the remarkable leadership of our captains Jackie Martin, Mary McNeil, Abbey Mitcheroney and Kelsey Trerice

Boys Hockey earns three lopsided Hockomock victories- The Boys Hockey team skated to three big victories this past week, downing Taunton last Saturday, Stoughton midweek and Foxboro at home Saturday night on Senior Night. The team's offense has exploded of late, scoring 34 goal in the last four games. Four Bulldogs are in double-digits in scoring so far this season- Matt Lazaro (17), John Femia (16), Shaun Kirby (14) and Brian Hagan (10).

Swim Teams earn huge Davenport wins- Both the Boys and Girls Swim teams continued swimming very well this past week with the highlight coming in the form of big wins over Davenport foe Oliver Ames at home on Friday. The Boys bested the Tigers 93-70 while the Girls score was 96-69. The victory came on the heels of two tough losses at Milford- Girls (80-90) and Boys (76-94).

Wrestlers continue with strong performances- Rob Dicaologero's claiming of the Peckham Tournament title started the week out strong for the Bulldog Wrestlers. A midweek battle with Oliver Ames saw the 'dogs come up shorts (30-50), while the team split in the four matches they were in on Saturday's super-quad at Milton. Some grappler earning impressive wins this week included Mike Reese, Caleb Nix, Steven Corkery, Justin Dickie, Jack O'Brien, Alessandro Cipolloni, Cooper Huber and Stathi Dandis.

Gymnasts continue to improve- Despite not managing to earn a victory this week, the Gymnastics team continued to show great improvement- breaking the 120 point-mark in two of their three meets this week (121.8 against OA and 122.7 against Mansfield). Some great performances were put in by: Julia Burkowsky (8.5-vault), Cassie Loftus (8.5- floor, 8.5- beam, 8.85- floor), Kehla Minkin (8.0-beam), Erika Lum (8.4- beam).

The Boys and Girls Basketball teams and Indoor Track teams were unable to pick up any wins this week despite some strong performances.

Meeting for interested Softball players

There will be an brief but important meeting on Tuesday, January 20th at 2:30 pm for any girl interested in being a part of the CHS Softball program this spring.  The meeting will take place in the CHS Cafeteria.

Newly appointed coach,  Tracy Andrews will be formally introduced at this meeting. Coach Andrews will meet the girls, discuss her plans, and distribute some important information.

Another important task at this meeting will be the creation of a list of student athletes who are planning on coming out for softball this spring.  The CHS Athletic Department is looking into the level of interest in the 9th grade class in order to evaluate the feasibility of adding a Freshmen team this spring.  It is very important that all interested softball players attend this meeting. If you are unable to attend, you must stop by the Athletic Department office between now and Tuesday to indicate that you are interested in playing softball this spring.

Good luck to coach Andrews as she begins her tenure as our Softball coach!

Peckham Wrestling Tourney- A great tradition

If you visited the CHS Masciarelli Gymnasium today, you you would have found the place bursting at the seems with wrestling. That is because today marks the 18th annual James Peckham Invitational Tournament. You can set your calendar by this tournament as it always runs during the 2nd Saturday of the month. It has become a January tradition here and is one of the finest Bulldog athletic events of the entire school year.

This year's tournament features 9 teams- Canton, Xaverian, Southeastern Regional, Randolph, Norton, Norwood, Sharon, Mansfield and Somerset-Berkley.  It is a battle of some great wrestlers and a special tournament  for our Bulldogs.

It was 18 years ago that Hall of Famer Tom Bartosek- founder and the first coach of the CHS Wrestling team- created the tournament in honor of James Peckham.  Peckham was a legend of Massachusetts Wrestling and is a member of the Wrestling Hall of Fame as well. The tournament has grown and evolved over the years and has also become a celebration of coach Bartosek- who is really the "father of wrestling" in Canton.

Canton's wrestlers competed with heart and courage today. Senior Rob Dicalogero was the only Bulldog to earn the championship in his weight class, but many others performed very well including the following 3rd place finishers: Wavol Prentice, Brendan Lewis and Sean Murphy.

It's a great day of Wrestling and a great CHS tradition!

Weekly Highlights- Jan 2nd-9th 2015

Great start to 2015 for Bulldogs as many teams enjoyed some great success this past week!

Derek Harris (29) and Ben O'Neil (17) led the Bulldog scoring attack, but it was tenacious team defense that really won the game. The team sits at 4-4 with a busy week ahead.

Up and Down week for Boys Hockey- The Boys Hockey team came out flat and fell to Mansfield, 2-0 on Saturday but rebounded with a dominating performance in a 10-2 win over King Philip mid-week.  Seamus Pecararo and Tommy Kilduff scored their first varsity goals of their careers. The 'dogs sit at 3-3 after the first half-dozen games.

Wrestlers fall in mid-week duel with Foxboro- The 'dogs fell to the Warriors 46-29 but it was a great match. Some winners for the Bulldogs were- Brendan Lewis, Rob Dicalogero, Reda Chakir, Caleb Nix and Wavol Prentice.

Girls Hockey and Girls Basketball teams fight hard in losses- Competitive losses to some great opponents marked this week's results for the Girls hoop and hockey teams. Both teams continue to show great grit and look to earn some big wins in the week ahead.

No action this past week for Gymnasts.

New Year...Booster Club needs your help!

As many of us approach the new year with a vision of trying new things, I'd like to throw out an idea to Bulldog parents- Join and get involved in the CHS Athletic Booster Club. This is an incredibly important group who works for our student athletes to help improve their athletic experiences.

This group can only be successful if we get many parents involved. Please consider joining us. We have a monthly meeting and no commitment is necessary!

Next meeting is Monday, January 12th at 7:30pm in the CHS Teachers' Dining room. We would love to have some new faces at this first meeting of the year! Let's make 2015 the best it possibly can be for our CHS student athletes! Come on down and bring a friend!

AD's New Year's Resolution- Keep up with the Weekly Highlights Blog!

So it's been a busy and eventful December for all of our winter Bulldogs and this blog has not done a good job at documenting those many feats thus far. Let's get caught up with the action!

Girls Hockey starts season with 4 wins and only 1 loss- The Girls Hockey team is making some noise in Girls Hockey circles in Southeastern Mass as they have earned 4 big wins against only 1 loss (that to a top-notch Duxbury squad.)  Goaltending has been a strong point thus far with Lindsey Nolte and Colleen Kelleher sharing the net minding duties.  Offense has been led by Mary McNeil and Jackie Martin along with contributions from many underclassmen.

Girls Basketball earns big road win- A young and inexperienced Girls Basketball team has struggled early this season to generate much scoring but that certainly came to an end on Monday night at Blackstone-Millville Regional where the Bulldog offense exploded in a 68-26 win. Gabby Kenefeck led the scoring with 14 points. The win is the first under head coach Jimmy Choquette. Congrats coach and girls!

Boys Basketball wins BMR Holiday Tourney- After a rough start in the Hockomock League, going 0-3 to start the season, the Boys Basketball team bounced back, winning the Blackstone-Millville Regional High School Holiday tournament defeating Avon (79-43) in the Semi-Final and Burrilleville (66-35) in the Championship game. Griffin Jerrier was honored as the Tournament MVP while Rishi Jambunathan was named to the all-tournament team. Jambunathan buried an amazing 6 threes in the tourney final!  The team heads back into League action on Friday vs. Milford at home at 6:30.

Wrestlers off to a good start- The Bulldog grapplers are off to a 3-3 start in dual meet action but it's their individual performances that have created the early season highlights. This past week, the squad sent several members to compete at the Lowell Tournament- one of the best tournaments in the state. Rob Decalogero took his undefeated record into the tournament and finished in 6th place, falling in the quarterfinals. Wavol Prentice, Brendan Lewis and Reda Chakir all performed well too. The team will travel to Foxboro midweek before hosting their annual Peckham tournament on Saturday.

Boys Hockey sitting even after 4 games-  The Boys Hockey team earned two wins and surrendered two losses in a brutal first four games of the season which featured four of the toughest opponents on the schedule.  Wins against defending State Champion Beverly (7-3) and Quincy (3-1) featured some great play. Sophomore Shaun Kirby factored in on all 7 goals in the Beverly game earning a hat-trick and 4 assists, while line mates John Femia and Matt Lazaro each netted 2 goals of their own.

Swim teams start seasons off with some great performances and a huge win-  The Boys Swim team were the first PoolDogs to earn a win this season with an impressive 92-74 victory over Franklin. A loss to Taunton (99-64) could not dampen the spirits of this team. The Franklin match featured incredible performances by many swimmers but leading the way were- the 200 IM relay team of Diego Ferstler, Sean Mitchell, Sebastian Melendez and Dan Nadeau, qualified for the sectionals and states.  Melendez also qualified for both the sectionals and states in the 200 Free.

The Girls team had several great performances in what ended up being tough losses to Franklin and Taunton- the Taunton meet coming down to only 5 points. The 200 IM relay of Tiffany Ha, Amanda Walsh, Julia Guerini, and Kim Frazier, placed 1st in the Franklin meet and qualified for the sectionals and states. Ha Qualified in both the 200 IM and the 100 Breaststroke for both sectionals and states. Amanda Walsh qualified for the sectionals in the 500 Free. The Taunton meet saw great performances put in by Emilee Mercuri and Brianna Mitchell.

Indoor Track off and running- Despite the Boys and Girls teams both dropping meets to Sharon and OA, great individual performances have highlighted the start of the Indoor Track season. On the boys side, Liam Collins has one the mile in both meets posting the 2nd fastest time in the league thusfar (4:45.21). Mark Clancy won the 2 mile in the OA meet, qualifying for the states (10:33.79). Kenny Ofanogoro won the long jump against Sharon and qualified for the states. It was a 2nd-3rd finish in the 1000m against OA as Timmy Gutowski placed 2nd and Andrew Moy 3rd. Phil Pennachio won the shot put with a personal best throw of 36'5".

On the girls side, the Sharon meet saw Cat Song ran the fastest 2-mile in the league, qualifying for states and Selena Cho win the long jump  while Tamarra Auguste won the high jump. Cho performed will in the OA meet as well, winning the 55m while qualifying for states and also winning the long jump. Sam Koplik won the 55m hurdles and Song once again won the 2-mile. The 4x400 relay of Koplik, Jen Dever, Song and Cho also qualified for the states.

Gymnastics team continues growth- Despite falling in its first 3 meets of the season, the Gymnastics team has shown some great promise early in the season. Some great performances have been put in by Cassie Loftus (beam, floor, and vault), Julia Burkowsky (beam, floor and vault),and Erika Lum (vault).
