The Week in Review- Dec. 16-22, 2013

Lots of action in Bulldog land leading up to the Winter break with many teams in action. Big crowds at the home basketball and hockey games showed great Bulldog pride during the holiday season!

Big Week for Boys Basketball- The Boys Basketball team headed into the week looking to rebound from an opening game loss to powerhouse Taunton- and rebound they did. They won two huge Davenport tilts at home- one over defending champion Milford and the other over perennial power Oliver Ames. The Milford game saw the Bulldogs defend tremendously well, limiting the SkyHawk offence in the 48-41 win. The OA game was a different story as it was all about the Bulldog's offense as their incredible perimeter shooting led to a 78-68 win. Sam Larson, Tristan Morris and Matt Kelly were three of the Bulldog's top performers on the week.

Wrestlers shine in early meets- Despite only managing one win in their four matches as a team this week, many wrestlers had tremendous performances. Rob DiCalogero and Chris Sullivan went 4-0 in their matches this week while Waleed Chakir was 3-0 in Saturday's quad at Hingham. Brendan Lewis and Wavol Prentice were also among those with big victories this week. The team's sole team victory came in Saturday's quad over North Quincy 48-6.

Girls Hockey splits the week- The Girls Hockey team earned a big opening day win over Medway on Wednesday night, 2-1. Katie Kelleher paced the Bulldog offensive attack, netting both of the Bulldog goals. Friday saw the team play well against pre-season divisional favorite Westwood.  Despite matching the Wolverines in play for most of the game, the 'dogs were unable to find the back of the net and allowed two goals before eventually falling, 3-0 (the final one being on an open net).

Boys Hockey faces iron early- The Boys Hockey roster hasn't featured this many freshmen and sophomores for many, many seasons.  The young team had no time to ease its way into the season as they had to face both Franklin and Oliver Ames this week. The Panthers had won the Hock Kelley-Rex Division last year and the Tigers had eliminated the Bulldogs from the playoffs last season. The Franklin game was an even affair except the Bulldogs struggled to score while allowing the Panthers to take advantage of their opportunities, ultimately falling, 5-1. The OA game saw the Bulldogs play well again, taking a 3-1 lead late into the 3rd period before surrendering two goals and having to settle for a frustrating 3-3 tie. Sophomore Matt Lazaro (2) and senior Austin Zanino scored the Bulldog goal in the tie.

Swim teams edged by league power- The Boys and Girls Swim teams have had to overcome quite a bit early this season as they lost their home pool for at least the first 3/4 of the season and have been a team without a true home as a result. Hosting their first ever home meets at Randolph High School on Saturday, the teams faced perennial league power North Attleboro and gave them quite a fight.  The girls fell 84-77 and the boys fell 84-78. Those are incredibly close scores for a swim meet. Some top performers included- Felicia Lee in the 200 IM and Erin Martin in the 100 Fly. The 200 IM and 200 Free relay teams of Julia Guerini, Kim Frazier, Tiffany Ha and Emilee Mercuri both had tremendous times. Highlights on the boys' side included the 200 IM relay team of Diego Ferstier, Sean Mitchell, Dan Nadeau and Yanni Papadopoulos as well as the 200 Free relay team of Mitchell, Nadeau, Papadopoulos and Sam Riemer.

Gymnasts and Girls Hoop team perform well in losses-  The Gymnastics team saw many contributions from new, young members of the team as well as some seasoned veterans in an opening day loss to Oliver Ames. The same can be said of the start to the Girls Basketball season which has seen the 'dogs fall in their three games, but each game featured great 2nd half performances and improvement along the way!

The Week in Review- 12/8-12/21/13

The winter season got started this week as Track, Basketball and Wrestling all had their first contests of the season while scheduled hockey games on Saturday were postponed due to snow.

Wrestlers break even- The Wrestling team started the season at a dual tournament at Bristol Aggie on Saturday. The team got in a great deal of wrestling in this first day of competition, earning team wins against Hanover (42-42- win on tie-breaker) and Bristol Aggie (53-17) while falling to Wakefield (33-45) and Sabis (24-58).  Chris Sullivan, Rob DiCalogero and Brendan Lewis were perfect on the day- each going 4-0 while Mike Reese went 3-1. Max Platt, Courtland Priest, Waleed Chakir and Steili Dandis each earned multiple Bulldog victories on the day.

Boys and Girls Basketball teams fall to Taunton- Opening the hoop season against perennial power Taunton was quite a task for both the Boys and Girls squads, but both teams fought hard in what ended up being two losses. The Boys game was close throughout before the visitors pulled away in the 2nd half, defeating the Bulldogs 73-54. Sam Larson led the way for the Bulldogs scoring 18 points in the loss. The Girls game followed the opposite pattern, with the visiting Bulldogs digging themselves a deep hole by halftime, but battled back in the 2nd to make a great game of it, falling 51-38. The Girls were led by Shannon Foley's 14 point performance.

The Bulldog track teams ran up against powerful Oliver Ames in the league opener and were outmatched despite some strong performances.

Everyone is in action this week so next week's Week in Review will certainly have much more to it!

A new opportunity?

The time between the holidays is always very exciting around a high school athletic department and Canton High School is no exception. This is the time of year when our winter sports season kicks off and our student athletes are readying to represent their school and community in our gyms, rinks, tracks, and pools.  It's a time of year of hope, promise, excitement and potential. Unfortunately, this time of year can also bring painful news to some aspiring student athletes. It's the time of year when some of our student athletes are being cut from teams.

Roster cuts are a necessary evil of high school athletics. We strive to make opportunities available to as many of our student athletes as possible, but teams and rosters have their reasonable limits.

Over the past two decades of working in the CHS Athletic Department, I have seen countless examples of student athletes getting cut from one sport, only to go out for another and realize that they had a talent that they had never recognized before. Our indoor track and wrestling teams are currently still accepting new-comers at practice. Who knows, maybe the next great distance runner or state champion wrestler at CHS had been an aspiring hockey or basketball player. Who knows, maybe it's you.
