The time between the holidays is always very exciting around a high school athletic department and Canton High School is no exception. This is the time of year when our winter sports season kicks off and our student athletes are readying to represent their school and community in our gyms, rinks, tracks, and pools. It's a time of year of hope, promise, excitement and potential. Unfortunately, this time of year can also bring painful news to some aspiring student athletes. It's the time of year when some of our student athletes are being cut from teams.
Roster cuts are a necessary evil of high school athletics. We strive to make opportunities available to as many of our student athletes as possible, but teams and rosters have their reasonable limits.
Over the past two decades of working in the CHS Athletic Department, I have seen countless examples of student athletes getting cut from one sport, only to go out for another and realize that they had a talent that they had never recognized before. Our indoor track and wrestling teams are currently still accepting new-comers at practice. Who knows, maybe the next great distance runner or state champion wrestler at CHS had been an aspiring hockey or basketball player. Who knows, maybe it's you.
