A short break for the long New Year's Weekend

The CHS Athletic program is going to take advantage of a light schedule over the upcoming long, holiday weekend, and take a pause in contests, practices and other team activities.  We will be postponing all athletic activities from Friday, December 31st through Sunday, January 2nd.

We currently have only one interscholastic contest on the schedule during that time- a JV Boys Hockey game which will be rescheduled.

The only other change to the contest schedule is a Girls Varsity Hockey game with Franklin scheduled for Monday, January 3rdh.  That game has been postponed to Tuesday, January 4th at 6:30 in order to give the team a practice upon returning after this long weekend break.

This long weekend break is designed to help us keep our programs operating fully upon our return to school next week. Many programs and teams throughout the region have shutdown completely in recent days.  We are taking these steps in order to help avoid that here at CHS.

Have questions?- Don't hesitate to email at ericksond@cantonma.org

Happy New Year!

As we hit the December "break"

As our winter sports student athletes and families already know, the winter "break" still involves quite a bit of CHS Athletics action.

During this time, we are asking all of our winter student athletes, families and coaches, to be extra vigilant when it comes to Covid-19 precautions.  Many sports programs all around the state and nation have  been forced to alter schedules and even shutdown for a certain time period. For instance, the City of Boston recently put a pause on all high school athletics through January 10th.  WE DON'T WANT TO GET THERE!

In an effort to keep us all safe, healthy and to keep our programs going, we want to remind our Bulldogs to do the following during the break-

1. Keep up with a daily self-check of symptoms and if you have any PLEASE STAY HOME from your practice of contest.

2. Do a GREAT job with mask wearing while at your practice, contest and in all other places you are socializing.

3. Get Vaccinated and boosted.

Also- please know that "test and stay" options over winter break are not as available as when school is in session.

Let's be great at these precautions and keep our seasons rolling!

Happy Holidays to everyone in Bulldog Country!

Winter Contests set to begin!

This weekend will see the 2021-22 Bulldog Winter Athletic season officially begin interscholastic competition with the CHS Gymnastics team leading the way with a meet at Attleboro High School Friday night.  By next weekend, all of our winter teams will be in action.

Here is some important info for all winter Bulldog families and fans:

1. Live Streaming-
The CHS Athletic Department will provide live streams of home games whenever possible. Please understand that this is not always practical or possible but we will do our best! Some events may have a more professional level stream, complete with commentary, etc. while others may just provide video and many will have no stream at all.  Be sure to check this CHS Athletics Blog for updates on streaming links.  Many of our contests will be streamed on our CHS Athletics YouTube channel. Thanks to the CHS Booster club for their support in our live-streaming efforts!

2. Ticket Sales-
While many of our winter sports events carry no admission fee, some do.  You can expect to have to purchase a ticket to the following home contests- Boys and Girls Varsity Basketball, Boys and Girls Varsity Hockey and Varsity Wrestling.  It is also likely to expect a charge for these contests when on the road.  Indoor Track also may charge a fee at the League's neutral venues.
The easiest and fastest way to purchase tickets to our home contests is digitally. Here is the link to our CHS Athletics Digital Ticket Sales. Buying tickets ahead of time is the easiest option!

3. Masks- Just another reminder that masks must be worn at all contests by all in attendance regardless of the venue.

Masking and CHS Athletics

This Canton High School Athletics blog entry is intended to clarify the expectations around mask wearing this winter season for our winter athletes, families and fans.

In compliance with MIAA protocols and in an effort to keep our student athletes, families and spectators healthy and safe, masks must be worn at all times* by student athletes, coaches, spectators and all others in attendance at all indoor events at all venues.

MIAA Statement of November 23, 2021- As of this date in November, we are providing direction regarding masking guidelines for the winter season. This information is consistent with the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE), and set forth by the Commissioner of Education. In order to maximize full participation of winter sports we will begin the winter season with the same guidelines that we utilized this fall: Student-athletes, coaches, and officials that are indoors shall be masked. These are minimum required State safety standards that remain consistent with the practices that take place during the school day. While masking guidelines may vary at off campus facilities and venues please treat practices and competitions as school events and adhere to the above guideline. Further, be respectful to the policies and expectations set forth in school districts and local communities and continue the practice of communicating with member schools that may or may not have reached the 80% vaccination threshold. DESE has set a January 15, 2022 date to assess masking guidelines. Through our work with State officials, and monitoring vaccination rates and COVID rates, we will take into consideration MIAA committee votes and push for a transition to un-masking during athletic completion within the winter season.

We in the Canton High School Athletic Department fully appreciate the challenges associated with competing in athletics while masked. Further, we understand that our kids really thrive off of the social aspect of communicating with their teammates and coaches while able to see their full faces. We get it. We miss that too!  However, we are fully committed to following all MIAA and CPS Face Covering policies and to keeping our community safe and healthy.  We need your help!

We need everyone on board in order to make this work well.  We understand that the issue of masking has been a divisive one over the past 18 months and has really challenged our student athletes. However, these are the safety protocols put in place and our coaches and athletic staff cannot be alone in making sure we have 100% compliance. Your partnership is essential.

We ask that all CHS winter sports families discuss the importance of proper mask wearing while participating in CHS Athletics.  Your help is critical in getting all of us on the same page (whether we like it or not).  Some food for thought-

  • Please show your coach the respect of not having to put them in the position of repeatedly telling you to put on or fix your mask.

  • Remember that every time your coach needs to correct your mask-wearing, they are not able to focus on their role of coaching.

  • Proper mask-wearing means the mask is covering the nose and mouth.

  • Have a bunch of back-up masks in your athletic bag. We have masks available if you need them.

  • Excellence in sport is almost always a result of dealing well with adversity.  The team/player who deals with the "uncontrollables" the best are most often those who excel. This is a classic "uncontrollable!"  Bulldogs- let's not let this get in the way of our goals!

Thank you Bulldogs!

*At certain times in gymnastics and while in the pool for swimming, masks may be removed.

MacKinnon named Head Varsity Basketball Coach

MacKinnon in the huddle
at Franklin Pierce
The CHS Athletic Department is thrilled to announce the hiring of Eric MacKinnon as our Boys Varsity Basketball Coach.  MacKinnon becomes just the 3rd Boys Varsity Basketball Coach at CHS since 2003 (Mike Devoll- 2003/2004 thru 2010/2011 and Ryan Gordy- 2011/2012 thru 2020/2021).

MacKinnon comes to CHS from the college coaching ranks where he was an assistant coach at Franklin Pierce College in New Hampshire from 2015-2020. He has also been a director of Boston Celtics Basketball camps.  He currently teaches Wellness/PE in Easton Public Schools.

We are thrilled to have a coach of Eric's collegiate experience coming to head our program.  He is a passionate, knowledgeable, committed individual who is ready for this opportunity.  We are so very lucky to have landed him.

Eric MacKinnon-
CHS Boys Varsity
Basketball Coach

MacKinnon had this to say upon his appointment to the position-

"I could not be more honored and humbled for this opportunity to join the Canton Bulldog community. Canton High School has a proud tradition of great athletes, outstanding coaches and a culture of doing thing the right way. I can't wait to get to work with these student-athletes and help build a championship program in one of the most competitive leagues in the state."

MacKinnon returns to coach in the league he played in in high school as he was a member of several successful teams at Oliver Ames in his playing days.

We wish him the best of luck as he takes over our program!

2. Have a water plan.  Many of you will be heading to practice/games right after last period and you still need to have your own water so make sure you make a plan!

3. Driving to and from campus and on campus and parking.  TAKE IT SLOW!!!!!! Nobody should be driving more than 15 mph on our campus and the speed limit on Reynolds Street and Cotter Street is 20mph. TAKE THIS SERIOUSLY.  Also- NO parking in the large lot by the turf field and NO parking in any unmarked spots near that lot.  Not following these rules can result in loss of parking privileges.

4. Play an active role in helping to foster a kind, caring, empathetic climate around school.  Be friendly and look out for all of your fellow schoolmates. You are all in this together!

Important Bulldog Reminders!!!

Hello Bulldog Nation. With one week of CHS Athletics in the books, it's a good time to remind everyone of some key protocols and practices to help us all avoid troubles!

1. Don't forget to get a Doctor's note!!!! So if a Bulldog athlete goes to visit a health care professional for an injury sustained at a practice or contest, the student athlete MUST get a note from that professional, laying out a return to play. That means that even if the doctor says you are "good to go," you are not, until we have a note from that doctor stating so.  Basically- ALWAYS get a note from a doctor as to your status and be sure to get it to trainer Kristen prior to your next practice/contest.

2. You must be in school for AT LEAST the final 5 periods of the day in order to be able to participate in CHS Athletics after school that day.  A doctor's appointment (or other appointments of similar importance) are excused as long as a note is provided from the health care professional to the main office. A student who leaves school for a period or two because he/she wasn't feeling well is NOT eligible to return for athletics that day.  Remember- school comes first!

3. It is CHS policy that all student athletes be transported to/from away contests out of town by bus/van transportation provided by CHS. Last year, this policy was suspended but it has been reinstitute for this school year. This means that if a student athlete is going to be driven to/from an away event by a parent or other family member, an email must be sent PRIOR to the contest to both the coach and AD stating that is happening. Thank you for helping us navigate a return to this policy.

4. SAVE the DATE- Another blog entry will provide much more detail, but please save the date of Tuesday evening, September 14th at 7:00pm for an important presentation at the CHS stadium field (the turf). The evening will feature Dr. Greg Dale from Duke University. Keep an eye out for more info soon!

Heat to return this week

The weather has certainly proven to be an added challenge to the start of the 2021 Bulldog athletic year. The heat was an issue most days last week and it appears that heat and heavy rains could make an appearance again this upcoming week.

It is important to note that the MIAA has some very clear rules around participating in high school athletics during excessive heat days.  Back in 2019, they instituted a policy which created a scaled level of activity that can take place based on the "wet bulb" temperature reading. The wet bulb thermometer is a tool which aims to measure true temperature feel.  It takes into account actual temperature, wind, humidity, sun, shade.  Our athletic trainer, Kristen Aguiar, monitors this all day long and in various locations on days where the temperatures are excessively high.

Our coaches are also constantly reminding our student athletes to hydrate.  Hydration is something that we need the help of our families as well. It is impossible for a student athlete to get enough water on hot days when they are not drinking a lot at home all day- before and after practices/games.

CHS Booster Club Needs You!

The CHS Athletic Booster Club has been supporting CHS student athletes and teams for 15 years. Like for so many other organizations, the past year was not an ordinary one for the Boosters.  But, a small group of dedicated parents kept it going through the rough waters.  A BIG thank you to those folks- who I'm sure would prefer to remain behind the scenes!

It is now time to get things with the Boosters back to "normal." so we can hit the ground running this August as Fall Sports begin.

The Boosters will be hosting an informational meeting on Tuesday, June 29th at 6:30 in the CHS Cafeteria.

In order for the Boosters to continue supporting our student athletes, we NEED parents of our 'dogs to get involved.  There is a place for Booster parents who are able to commit lots of time and a place for parents who can only commit occasional, limited time. They need all comers!

Please consider attending the meeting on June 29th. It doesn't come with any strings attached but does provide a great opportunity to help enhance the CHS student athlete experience.

Thank you!

Gordy moves on from Boys Basketball - appointed Special Assistant to AD

Coach Ryan Gordy cutting down the net
in 2018 after leading his Bulldogs to
their first Hock Title in 26 years.

The CHS Athletic Department has some bitter-sweet news to share as we announce that Coach Ryan Gordy will be leaving his role of Head Boys Basketball coach and assuming the role as the department's first-ever Special Assistant to the Athletic Director.  The resignation takes effect immediately and the Special Assistant position will officially begin in July.

With the recent retirement of Denise Duffett as the CHS Athletic Department Secretary after nearly two decades behind the desk, the department has re-organized with the creation of the Special Assistant role. The position will see Gordy assisting with all aspects of the CHS Athletic Department ranging from administrative to supervisory to managerial duties. The shift will allow the department to be more efficient and more in line with the needs of the department in 2021.  The student athlete experience will certainly continue to improve at a more rapid clip with the introduction of this new position and with Coach Gordy in the role.  He brings amazing experiences, a vast understanding of the culture of CHS Athletics and a passion and love of high school athletics to this new role.

An Appreciative Farewell-

Gordy with his boys after winning
the Davenport in 2019

Coach Gordy has been at the helm of the CHS Boys Basketball program for the past decade. During that time he has developed a program respected by the entire Hockomock League and beyond.   He laid a foundation of success with his credo of "Commit-Compete" and in preaching to always "honor the process."  Coach Gordy's teams certainly lived up to those important pillars.

Over the past decade, Coach Gordy's teams have been honored with several Hockomock League Sportsmanship Awards and two Hockomock Davenport Championships.  The highlight of Gordy's tenure was undoubtedly how he marshaled his program through the tragic medical challenge suffered by his captain- Xavier Machuga. His support of "X" and his lessons of empathy for his entire program during this time really showcases what high school sports is all about.

Gordy led his Bulldogs to 87 victories during his time as head coach- highlighted by League Divisional titles in 2018 and 2019- a two year stretch that saw the Bulldogs go 20-1 at CHS's Masciarelli Gymnasium.

Coach Gordy has been a mentor to many in the Basketball world and at CHS.  The CHS Athletic Department is thrilled to have him assuming this new role.

Gordy had this to say upon his appointment-

"A decade of running the boys basketball program has been the thrill of my career. But now I look forward to stepping into a role where I can work with the athletes and coaches of all our sports programs at CHS."
