Update on CHS Fall Cheer Schedule

Due to the high volume of questions around the transition period for the CHS Cheer program while we search for a new coaching staff, we are issuing this statement to help clear up any questions/confusion.

Timeline for hiring a new coaching staff- The Head Coaching position is currently posted (on www.schoolspring.com Job ID#3102756).  It will remain posted through June 9th in order to get the best possible pool of candidates for the position.  We will then conduct interviews with an interview committee with the hopes of naming a new head coach before the end of the school year.   An assistant coach will be hired after we hire a head coach.

Impact of a June hire- Hiring a head cheer coach this late in the school year has a significant impact on how the summer/fall schedule will look:

- Tryouts- Traditionally Fall Cheer tryouts take place in early June but that is obviously not possible this year. Our plan is to hold off on our tryouts until late summer- which is in line with all of our other Fall programs.

- Summer Camp- Our CHS Cheer coaches will not be organizing any camp activities over the summer. There is simply not enough time for a new staff to safely put camp plans together.  Student athletes interested in summer training opportunities are encouraged to seek them out- including any camp options that may be out there.  However, our CHS Coaches will not be organizing any of these this summer.

Online Registration for Fall Cheer will open up in early June with all other fall sports. Tryout information will be available as soon as our staff is in place and has time to coordinate that schedule.

If you have any questions regarding any of this transition plan, please don't hesitate to contact the CHS Athletic Office.

Cheerleading Coaching Staff bids farewell

CHS Cheer has had major successes during the past decade.
Head Cheerleading coach Val Baker and her long-time assistant coach Krissie Baker recently announced their retirements from coaching the CHS Cheer Squad.  The pair, who are also sisters, have been at the helm of the CHS Cheer program for the past nine years, guiding the team in both the fall and winter seasons.

During those 18 seasons, the pair led the team through many successes including qualifying for States nearly every season, Fall 2013 South Regional Co-ed Champs, Winter 2014 South Regional Champs and the major honor of qualifying and competing in Nationals in Orlando, Florida during the 2014 winter season where they finished 5th in the nation.

Coach Val Baker had this to say on her retirement-

"Coaching Canton High School cheerleading for the past nine years has been an honor and an amazing experience.  I've been very fortunate to go from an alumni to a mentor.  Watching athletes grow from freshmen to seniors has been beyond rewarding, and I will miss it tremendously."

Both Bakers have impressive cheer resumes of their own:

Assistant Coach Krissie Baker with
captain Fiona Gilmore
Val Baker-

  • Four year CHS cheerleader and senior captain
  • Earned UCA All-American honors her senior year
  • Cheered at Assumption College where she competed a the National is Daytona Florida
  • Cheered for All-Star team East Celebrity Elite where she qualified for the Cheerleading Worlds

Krissie Baker-

  • Canton High Varsity cheer for 4 year and senior captain
  • Earned UCA All-American honors her senior year
  • Cheered at Curry College

Also leaving the program after many years involved are two amazing coaches who have volunteered so much of their time during the Cheer program's Baker years- Kelsey Cummings and Hannah Dickie. Cummings and Dickie are both former CHS Cheerleaders.  Cummings started volunteer coaching for the Bulldogs in 2012 and Dickie in 2015. Both have made a great impact in the lives of many.

Canton High School is lucky to have had such dedicated, talented coaches for our cheer program over the past decade. Best of luck to all of them in the next chapters of their lives.

Trerice and Mazzola honored as Hock Scholar Athletes

CHS Hock Scholar Athlete Award winners Katie Trerice and
Mike Mazzola with their parents at the annual banquet.
Each May, the Hockomock League celebrates educational athletics by honoring a male and female graduating senior from each of our 12 schools.  These 24 graduating seniors represent the best from their collective schools when it comes to excelling both in the classroom and on the field.  Last night, our league's principals, athletic directors, honored student athletes and parents, gathered in Wrentham for a banquet celebrating not only this special two dozen students, but all students who value and understand the responsible balance between academics and athletics.

Canton's recipients of this year's Scholar-Athlete awards are Kathryn Trerice and Michael Mazzola. Trerice has been a key member of our very successful Field Hockey and Ice Hockey programs during her time here, while Mazzola has been a key member of the Boys Soccer, Indoor Track and Spring Track and Field teams during his time here. Both have managed to excel on the field/ice/track while also being among this highest achieving academically in their class.  Canton High School is very proud of both of them.

CHS is proud of both of these shining examples of student athlete excellence, as well as the hundreds of other Bulldogs who commit fully to excelling in the classroom as well.
