Boston Herald Ranks Girls and Boys Hockey teams tops in D2

Colleen Kelleher and Laura Noone
Just a little bit more crowing to do from the CHS Athletic office today!  Yesterday, Jan. 16th was a pretty cool day to be a Bulldog. The Boys Basketball team won a HUGE game against Foxboro to improve to 8-1 and earn sole possession of 1st place in the Davenport.

Bubba McNeice
Boys and Girls Hockey- Over on the ice- an amazing accomplishment.

The Boston Herald Sports Dept. has been doing high school hockey rankings for years. This week saw the Bulldogs take the top spot in their D2 rankings on both the Boys and Girls sides.  The Girls currently sit with an undefeated record of 6-0-2 while the Boys have a mark of 5-1-4.  Lots of high school hockey programs out there but the Bulldogs are certainly making a lot of noise and getting their just due from the Herald along the way.

Well done players, coaches, and supporters!  Let's keep this thing going!

There's something' happenin' here

As we approach the mid-way point in the 17-18 winter season, Bulldog-land is abuzz with excitement as our teams are off to amazing starts.

Our Boys and Girls Basketball and Hockey teams have played a total of 32 games and have lost only 4. Wait...what??? 32 games and only 4 losses??? What a start! If you are not already on this bandwagon, you need to hop on quick! No time to waste!

Girls Hockey is the only undefeated team at 6-0-2 while the Boys have posted an impressive mark of 5-1-3 against some very hefty competition.  On the hardcourt- our Boys Basketball team has dropped just one game (to perennial D1 power Mansfield) on their way to a 7-1 record to date with a huge game with Foxboro coming up on Tuesday. Our Girls Basketball team has worked hard on their way to a 5-2 mark, just one victory short of their total wins last season.

Our Wrestling team sits with a 4-3 mark in head-to-head match-ups, while they have had some amazing individual results along the way. Both Swim teams sit at .500% with records of 3-3.  Gymnastics and the Boys and Girls Track teams are still looking for that elusive first victory but individual performances continue to turn heads.  Competition season is set to get underway for our Cheer squad later in the month.

Here are some big upcoming home contests:

Monday, Jan. 15th- MLK Day- Gymnastics host Franklin at 10:00am at Metro-South Gymnastics Academy

Tuesday, Jan. 16th- Boys Basketball hosts Foxboro at 6:30...both teams have league records of 5-1...good enough for 1st place tie in the Davenport

Wednesday, Jan. 17th- Girls Hockey vs. Medfield at 4:00pm at the IceHouse.

Friday, Jan. 19th- Girls Basketball host Stoughton at 6:30pm

21st annual Peckham Wrestling Tournament

Bulldog Coaches Brian
Caffelle and Tye Seastedt during
Chakir's final match.
It was twenty-one years ago when CHS Wrestling founder Tom Bartosek (member of the Mass Chapter of the National Wrestling Coaches Hall of Fame) hosted the first-ever James Peckham Wrestling Tournament here at CHS. Today marks the 21st consecutive year that this amazing tournament has taken place here at CHS.

Peckham was a legend of Massachusetts Wrestling and is a member of the Massachusetts Wrestling Coaches Hall of Fame as well. The tournament has grown and evolved over the years and has also become a celebration of coach Bartosek- who is really the "father of wrestling" in Canton.

For the past 8 seasons, the Bulldogs have been coached by Brian Caffelle- one of Bartosek's most impressive wrestlers back in his wrestling days. Caffelle has done an amazing job in keeping this local tradition alive and thriving up until this very day- the 21st year.

Participating in this year's tournament were Canton, King Philip, Norton, Xaverian, Southeastern, Sharon, Milton, Mansfield, Randolph, Advanced Math and Science, and New Bedford.

Eddie Marinilli and Anis Chakir- 2018 Peckham Champions
Two Bulldogs earned First Place Championships in their weight class- Anis Chakir (132) and Eddie Marinilli (138). Justin Dickie took 2nd at 126.

Today's tournament used our two new state-of-the-art Wrestling mats. One which was donated by EM Duggan Company and the other through the generous donations of so many including major support from the CHS Athletic Booster Club.

As Athletic Director, I can truly say that there is no other single athletic event held at CHS each year that is as impressive, competitive and ambitious as this annual tradition. It exudes teamwork, sportsmanship, hard work, perseverance, positive culture, tradition and the positive nature of competition- all in honor of some great role models.  What else can you ask from a high school athletic event/experience?

The Bulldogs are enjoying a great start to the season which has featured many wins and many competitive defeats.  It's an exciting team to watch.

Missed today's action?  There are plenty of opportunities to see great Wrestling action here at CHS in coming weekends this month. The team will host a Quad-match on Saturday morning, January 20th and will host the prestigious Hockomock Championship match all day on Saturday, January 27th.
