A new approach to our Strength and Conditioning

A Message from our Strength and Conditioning Coach- Adam Hughes

In order to grow into your optimal practice, reflection and self-awareness are essential.  Strength and Conditioning at Canton High School has been providing students with the opportunity to have consistent and high quality training throughout the school year and summer since 2018.  The program has offered both in-season and off-season training components.  In the last two years, our off-season program and student engagement has taken a large dip.  There are multiple reasons that this has happened and a shift in practice is needed for our continued growth and physical improvement of our students.  This shift comes with great consideration of how to best impact all of our students and help them establish positive routines, practices, and healthy habits.

Beginning on Monday, March 6, 2023, the structure of training throughout the school year will change.  We will begin offering our off-season training model after school 3-4 times per week for an hour and fifteen to thirty minutes each session.  Our in-season programs will be provided with a consistent program that they themselves can execute under the direction of each coach and captains.  This new model will provide in-season athletes with a stretch band to keep and a set of stick rollers for each team to use during the season.  The program will be aimed at providing consistent pre-practice/game warm-up, mobility, and flexibility routines as well as post-practice/game band stretch routines for active recovery.  These programs will be the responsibility of coaches and captains to facilitate each day and to hold teams accountable to doing.

This shift will allow our off-season program to build a solid foundation for our students to engage in and will promote optimal student growth in their physical strength and conditioning.  We highly encourage ALL students to register on Family ID for Strength and Conditioning so that you can receive the weekly email with the scheduled sessions for the week.  Should you have any questions please reach out to Adam Hughes, Head Strength and Conditioning Coach at hughesa@cantonma.org.

Coaching shake-up in Spring Track

The CHS Athletic Office is excited to announce a shake-up with the coaching staff structure of our Spring Track & Field program beginning next month.

For the past decade both the Boys & Girls Spring Track teams have had a single head coach- Anna Amico. Given the growth of the programs and the growing demands that come with that growth, we have restructured the coaching staff. There will now be a Head Varsity Boys coach and a Head Varsity Girls coach.

Coach Amico will be narrowing her role to that of Head Varsity Girls coach while Coach Brian Gotsell will head the Boys program.  Amico has been leading the track programs at CHS since 2014.  Gotsell joined the Bulldog coaching staff this past fall as Head Cross Country Coach.

We are confident that this shift in structure will lead towards an overall better experience for our student athletes in our Spring Track programs.

Best of luck to both Coach Amico and Coach Gotsell in the spring!

Boys Hockey celebrates 300 wins under Coach Shuman

Coach Brian Shuman & Matty
Marcone being honored in
2016-one of Shuman's
many COY awards

The CHS Athletic office is very proud to announce that this past Wednesday's 5-0 win over Hockomock rival Mansfield was our Boys Hockey team's 300th win under Coach Brian Shuman.

At today's Ed Burns Tournament tilt vs. Marshfield, a grateful crowd including dozens of alumni players and parents celebrated Coach Shuman’s huge accomplishment.

It has taken Coach Shuman less than 18 full seasons to reach this milestone.  Let that sink in- 300 wins in less than 18 seasons.

The milestone is certainly an accomplishment for the entire Canton Hockey community which continues to produce many talented young hockey players.  However, it is impossible to overstate the impact that Coach Shuman's coaching has had on our Boys Hockey program and the boys who have been a part of it over the past 18 seasons.

During that time, the CHS Boys Hockey team has amassed a remarkable record of 300 wins, 35 ties and 63 losses.

Highlights are truly too many to list but among them are:
  • Three State Championships- 2010, 2019, 2020
  • Five trips to the State Finals- 2009, 2010, 2019, 2020, 2021
  • 15 League Championships
  • Numerous Sportsmanship Awards
  • Later-to-be-appointed commissioner Matty Marcone's "One Shift" Goal
Coach Shuman and the 2010 boys celebrating the
first State Championship
A personal note from the AD-
"Brian is the gold standard here at CHS.  He models what it means to have a growth mindset and to be a lifelong learner. He embodies what it means to be a player-centered coach.

His coaching truly gets better every year and as a result, the positive impact he has on his student athletes is immeasurable.  In times of triumph, disappointment, and even tragedy, he has provided amazing leadership and care for his kids.

He is an amazing role model and representative of CHS. Thank you Coach!"

Coach Senyonjo takes his soccer expertise home

CHS Girls Varsity Soccer Coach Idris Senyonjo
in action at his tournament in Uganda
Coach Idris Senyonjo has been serving as our Bulldog Girls Varsity Soccer Coach since 2020.  During that three-season stretch, the team has played to a record of 25-14-11 while representing our school with great sportsmanship and pride.  This winter, Coach Senyonjo traveled with his family back to his native Uganda where he did a lot more than just vacation. He saw an opportunity to bring joy, competition and fun to Ugandan kids by holding a soccer tournament.

Below is his own account of his winter "vacation."  It's a great opportunity for all of us to feel grateful for all that we have here in Canton and to remember that sports are really about community and not all of the other distractions that can get in the way of the basic enjoyment of the game.

We, in Bulldogland, are very proud of Coach Senyonjo for his work in Uganda.

Coach Idris Senyonjo's account-

Growing up I never thought I would ever want to coach soccer.  Growing up in Uganda, soccer is what everyone begins playing by about the age of three.  As a result, soccer has always been a part of my life.  Fast forward to now and I couldn't see myself enjoying that many things as I do coaching the sport I love.

Because I grew up in Uganda, I make an effort to go visit my family at least once every year. Every time I visit, and look out the window as we drive through the city, I see kids out on dirt-filled soccer fields playing from dusk till dawn and this always brings memories and a reminder as to why I love the game and am obsessed with it.

This past December I decided to do something that hadn't been done before in the country. I decided to put together a free soccer tournament for the kids who would love to play soccer but due to one reason or another, cannot afford to play in an organized soccer event.

The tournament was for both boys and girls.  It was the first of hopefully many more tournaments within Kampala, Uganda. Nothing was more gratifying than seeing 400+ kids out there playing soccer and enjoying the opportunity to be noticed by various coaches and youth organizations that would otherwise not have been possible for most of these kids.

Having a chat with lots of the kids over the weekend of the tournament actually made me realize that something like this was even more important to them than I had even imagined.

Soccer has always offered many youth in the country a way out. Whether its an opportunity to be good enough to one day represent the country, or a way to stay away from associating with the wrong crowds or even as the only way for them to stay in school seeing that a scholarship is the only way they can get an education, one thing is for certain, soccer is everything to them.

I also do want to thank all the families here who contributed lots of gently used soccer equipment that were part of the items presented to some of the players at the tournament.
