Coach Fior Griffin announces she is leaving her position

People often over-use the phrase "time flies," but in this case it seems very appropriate.  It feels like just yesterday that Fior Griffin came to CHS to become our varsity Field Hockey coach.  It was actually nine years ago.  And after nine successful seasons at the helm, she has decided to move on from her CHS field hockey family to focus on her own growing family.

Griffin stated the following in an email to the parents of her players- "I am so proud to say that I was part of such a special team...family.  I have given my all to being their coach, and it has been an amazing experience.  I will carry with me such great memories.  But as my own children are getting older, I find that I need to focus on their needs at this time."

Griffin came to CHS fresh off a highly successful playing career at Northeastern University.  She brought a wealth of field hockey knowledge and a fiery passion for the sport with her to CHS.  Over her nine seasons here, she used that knowledge and passion as a foundation for a coaching career that saw her become more effective working with high school athletes each and every season.

There are many different challenges new coaches take on when they take over a varsity program.  Sometimes, a coach is charged with trying to take a struggling program and make it competitive.  That can certainly be a big task.  However, a strong argument can be made that it may be even more challenging to walk into a successful program, and be sure that that level of success in maintained.  That is the story of coach Fior Griffin.  She took over one of the most successful Field Hockey programs in the state and she managed to maintain that high level of success for nearly a decade.

The CHS Athletic Department would like to thank coach Griffin for her dedicated service and leadership over the past nine years. We are proud to have had you as our coach over that string of successful seasons. We wish you and your family the best of luck in the future- and hopefully some additional family time next fall!

Successful fall season winding to an end

Thanks go out to our fall athletic programs- student athletes, coaches, and fans for starting off the 2015-16 season with a bang.  There were tons of successes that we can all be proud of.

Our Cheerleading team, who are in action today at an invitational at Whitman-Hanson High School, once again qualified for the Regionals with an amazing performance at the Hocks.

Our Girls Soccer team finished 2nd in the Davenport and earned a #3 seeded in the D2 South Tournament, where they went on to defeat league rival Foxboro before falling to Midfield.

Our Boys Soccer team was honored by the Hockomock League coaches with the Sportsmanship Award for representing CHS with exceptional class and sportsmanship all season long.

Our Boys and Girls Cross Country teams continued to show massive improvement this season.  Moving their new home course to Pequitside Farm helped to symbolically mark the start of the next stages of the program's success.

Our Golf team continued its phenomenal run of success, dropping only 3 matches all year long. The team's average score this fall was amazingly low.

Our Field Hockey team started slow but really hit its stride by October and made an astonishing run in the D1 South MIAA Tournament, earning huge upsets over Bridgewater-Raynham and Norwood before falling to perennial power (and eventual Sectional Champ) Walpole.

Our Volleyball team continued its run of dominance through the Hockomock for yet another season, winning the League/Divisional title for the 9th straight season. They also advanced to the Central Sectional Final for the 3rd time in the past 4 seasons.

Finally, our Football team had an amazing run through the regular season, posting a 5-2 record and treating us all to a wonderful brand of football. The 5-2 record represented the team's best campaign in decades and really caught the attention of all of southeastern Mass Football. The team will look to end the season with a victory over Stoughton on Thanksgiving- 10:00am at CHS.

Tournament Update- Volleyball rolls...Girls Soccer and Field Hockey bow out

Monday night saw the #3 seeded Volleyball team win its opening match of the D2 Central Tournament, 3-0 (25-17. 25-17, 25-19)over #6 seeded Milton. The Quarter-Final victory highlighted some amazing and dominating play by the home Bulldogs in front of a packed gym. The team will travel to Medway Thursday night at 7:00 to face the #2 seeded Mustangs in Sectional Semi-Final action.

Field Hockey's Cinderella story came to an end on Sunday at #2 seeded Walpole (a perennial D1 power) as the Bulldogs fell 3-1. The game was tied at 1-1 at the half on a goal by Colleen Phelan, but two 2nd half goals by the Rebels kept the Bulldog's hopes of a 3rd straight road upset from happening. The #23 seeded Bulldogs had previously beaten #10 seed Bridgewater-Raynham and #7 seeded Norwood to advance to the Sectional Quater-Final Round. It was an amazing run.

#3 seeded Girls Soccer defeated league rival and 14th seeded Foxboro 2-0 to advance to the D2 South Sectional Quarter-Final round where they fell by that same score to visiting Medfield.  Tessa Cudmore and Hannah Link scored the Bulldog goals in the first round win. The loss to Medfield was a great battle seeing both teams creating chances, but two late Medfield tallies ended up eliminating the Bulldogs. They had a tremendous season.

An amazing goal by Tessa Cudmore on a strike from the corner of the field came just 27 seconds into the game, and set the tone for what would be a great Bulldog performance. Hannah Link scored mid-way through the 2nd half to ice the victory for the #3 seeded Bulldogs.

Student Blog Entry- Field Hockey ready for Norwood

By Melissa Kleinbauer
After a challenging regular season and a 7-6-3 record, the Canton field hockey team has seen a demanding season, standing in fourth place in the Hockomock Davenport league. However, the team rallied to capture a spot in the MIAA playoffs. Last Wednesday, at Bridgewater-Raynham High School, the Bulldogs pulled through to a triumphant 1-0 victory, qualifying them to move onto the 2nd round of playoffs: an away game tonight against Norwood.

Norwood and Canton have faced each other once this season at Norwood High School in late September, with Norwood, who has a 13-4-1 record, triumphed over Canton.

“We know they have a lot of speed and have a couple of really strong players but we just came out flat last game,” says senior captain Lindsey Nolte. “If we play up to our potential, then we will most definitely give them a good game.”

Canton will be facing the Norwood Mustangs after school today at 2:30pm at Norwood Senior High School. Best of luck to our Bulldogs!

Field Hockey Advances to Face Norwood

The #23 seeded CHS Field Hockey team played a tremendous game on Wednesday afternoon, defeating #10  seeded Bridgewater-Raynham on the road, 1-0 behind a Lindsey Nolte goal and plenty of strong performances. Canton fans were out in force for this preliminary round game, played on a well-groomed grass field on a beautiful November afternoon.

The win sets up a showdown with #7 seeded Norwood, a team the Bulldogs have played often in recent seasons. The game will be played at 2:30 at NHS on Friday, November 6th. The two teams played earlier in the season with the Mustangs besting the Bulldogs, 2-0. The 'dogs will be out for a different result this time around.

Swim Team Update- New Coach and Important Meeting

The CHS Athletic Department is happy to officially announce the hiring of Cheryl Cavanaugh as the new Head Coach for the CHS Boys and Girls Swim Team. Cavanaugh takes the reigns from long-time coach Lori Mooney, who retired from the post after many successful seasons.

Cavanaugh brings a wealth of experience to CHS. She was the founder and first coach of the Walpole High School swim team and has served in that role for the past 31 years. She is currently still the Walpole High School Fall Swim coach. She was named Coach of the year in 2008. She has also worked with Walpole Youth Swimming (3-18 year olds) for 41 years.

It is rare that a candidate with such a depth and width of experiences comes along. We are very lucky to have her on board.

Bulldogs will get a chance to meet coach Cavanaugh on Monday, November 9th at 2:30 in the CHS Library. This is a MANDATORY but brief meeting for anyone interested in joining the swim team this winter. Coach will be taking sign-ups and swim suit size info.

Volleyball team looking to post-season

By: Anis Chakir

The Canton Bulldog’s volleyball team boasts the best record in the Hockomock league as the season has come to an end. The Lady Bulldogs also finished the regular season as Hockomock Champions. The Bulldogs head into the state tournament later on this week as a likely candidate for the state title. Canton’s volleyball team established themselves as a threat, despite shocking losses to King Philip and Duxbury. With a 15-3 record—including victories against league rivals North Attleboro, Mansfield, and Oliver Ames—the Bulldogs are not a team to sleep on in the state tournament.
