Girls Soccer game CANCELED

The Girls Soccer game scheduled with Andover on Monday, October 30th and originally postponed to Today- Tuesday, October 31st, has been cancelled. The game will not be made up. The cancelation is due to damage caused in Andover by Sunday night's storm.

The Bulldog's next action will be in the State Tournament. The team will be seeded based on a regular season record of 10-5-2. Watch this blog for updates!

MIAA Tourney Info- Field Hockey, Boys & Girls Soccer- Updated 11-10-17

Field Hockey- Our Bulldogs were seeded #4 in the MIAA D1 South tournament.  They defeated #13 Dartmouth at home on Saturday, 2-1. They then advanced to the Sectional Semi with a thrilling 3-2 win over #12 seeded Barnstable on Monday night. The excitement of that Quarter-Final game was eclipsed by the Semi-Final game at #1 seeded, undefeated Somerset-Berkley on Wednesday night. After battling the top-seeded team to a 2-2 regulation time tie, the 'dogs season came to an abrupt end on a goal by S-B minutes into OT.  It was a tremendous game. The team finished their season with a record of 16-4-1

Boys Soccer- Our Bulldogs were seeded #8 and hosted #9 seeded Foxboro in the first round but they were defeated 4-1 by the Warriors. They finished their season at 10-5-4.

Girls Soccer- Our Bulldogs were seeded #10 in the MIAA D2 South Girls Soccer Tournament and fell 3-0 to Holliston in the first round. They finished the season with a record of 10-6-2.

Field Hockey wins Davenport!

A key road tie at Foxboro and a big home win over Stoughton this week propelled the Field Hockey team to its first Davenport Title since 2013. The Stoughton game wrapped up the regular season with the team posting an impressive record of 14-3-1.

The MIAA state tournament seedings will be announced on Monday and the Bulldogs are looking to get a very high seed in the D1South bracket.

Late October Status Update

As all of our fall Bulldog teams head into the tail end of their seasons, here is an update of how our varsity squads are doing.

Golf- The Golf team may have a better winning percentage than any other Bulldog program over the past several years and this fall season certainly saw this group rise to the top.  The team went unbeaten in the Davenport and posted a 13-1 regular season record en-route to a Davenport Championship. The team also repeated as first place finishers in the Hockomock Championship Golf meet- held this past Thursday at Blue Hills Country Club. The team is headed into MIAA tournament play this Monday at Eason CC.

Boys and Girls Cross Country-  Both the Boys and Girls XC teams have shown great grit, determination and improvement this season. Both teams went 2-3 in the Hockomock dual meet season. The teams are now preparing for the Hock Championship meet and the MIAA divisional meet coming up in the next couple of weeks. This group has also exhibited amazing togetherness and unity throughout the entire season.

Unified Basketball- The Unified Basketball season starts up a bit later than the rest of the fall sports so it's still early, but all signs are pointing towards great things as the team is 2-0 in its first two games- a home victory over Milford and a road win at Westwood.

Cheerleading- Our Cheer squad has been working hard all fall in both working on their competition routine and performing their game routines. The payoff comes in the coming weeks as the girls will compete at the Hock Championship meet, a Braintree Invite and then hopefully the Sectionals/States.

Football- Friday night's loss at Davenport Champion North Attleboro eliminated this gutsy group from playoff contention. The team's 2-5 record certainly does not reflect the type of season they have had. Had the results turned out differently in any of three early season heartbreaking losses (16-17 to Scituate, 19-21 to Milford, and an OT defeat to Foxboro) the Bulldogs could be heading to the playoffs for the first time in recent memory. The team will play in a 3-game mini-season for the next three weeks before hosting rival Stoughton on Thanksgiving Day.

Field Hockey- The Field Hockey squad looks to have returned to their glory days with an amazing run this season. Their 13-3 mark thus far has them sitting atop the Davenport division of the Hockomock.  A victory or tie against 2nd place Foxboro on Monday ensures the Bulldogs at least a share of the Davenport crown. Failing to get a result at Foxboro on Monday will push the decision of who will be Davenport Champs until the final game of the season against Stoughton on Wednesday.

Volleyball- An amazing ten-year run of consecutive Hockomock Championships has come to a close this fall as the Bulldogs find themselves in a fight to qualify for the state tournament.  The team has showed amazing grace and character during this challenging season- while still playing some great volleyball.  The team has 4 matches remaining and must win-out to qualify. If anyone has it in them, it's this scrappy group of hard working student athletes.

This team- in particular- also always goes above and beyond off the court. This fall they have shown amazing social consciousness and leadership in participating in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Event and organizing "Dig X"- a match dedicated to classmate Xavier Machuga who is battling back from a major medical incident.

This season also saw coach Pat Cawley- Bulldog legend- get her due as she was inducted into the Mass Girls Volleyball Coaches Association Hall of Fame. Congrats Coach!

Boys Soccer- The Boys Soccer team has a record of 8-4-3 and qualified for the state tournament for the 2nd year in-a-row and for the 11th season in the past 12 with two big Davenport wins this past week- 4-3 over Milford and 2-1 over Sharon. The team has an outside chance a earning a Davenport Championship but they will need to win-out and get some help. The team is unbeaten at home to this point in the season.

Girls Soccer-  The Girls soccer team has nearly an identical record to the Boys at this point- 8-4-2 and they sit in 2nd place in the Hockomock Davenport Division. They qualified for the state tournament with big wins this week over Milford (3-0) and Sharon (4-2). The team travels to Hingham tonight to face a strong Notre Dame Academy squad- a great pre-tournament test.

Golf Improves to 6-0

Big shout out to the CHS Golf team who improved to 6-0 with a very impressive win vs. Sharon on Tuesday at Blue Hills CC, 139-173.

The Bulldogs have played consistently great golf during this first stretch of a half-dozen games en-route to a perfect record so far.

High School Golf 101- A match consists of 8 golfers from each school playing 9 holes. The best four scores from each team are added together and the lowest total score wins.  Even though the level of difficulty varies greatly from course to course, anytime players are breaking 40 is a good day.

So when I look at high school golf team scores, I look at any day under 160 as a great day. Check out the Bulldogs match scores so far this year:

Canton 155 at Milford 166
Canton 152 at Stoughton 185
Foxboro 166 at Canton 155
Canton 154 at NA 157
Milford 165 at Canton 156
Sharon 173 at Canton 139

Many great individual performances have led the Bulldogs to the successful start including Jack Goyetch (who shot a 1-under par in the Sharon win), Joey Vaughn, Danny Powers, Chris Lavoie, Niko Donovan and Bubba McNeice.

Check out details about the team at their website. Team is coached by Mike Barucci- who also designed and maintains their great team website!

Unified Basketball ready for fall-winter season!

The Canton High School Athletic Department and the CHS Student Services Department are happy to announce the return of a Unified Basketball team for the 2017 Fall/Winter Season.

Special Olympics Project Unify is an education-based project, funded by the US Dept. of Education, that uses the sports and education programs of Special Olympics to activate young people across the US. In order to promote school communities where all young people are agents of change- fostering respect, dignity and advocacy for people with disabilities.  Canton High School and Special Olympics believe that through sports young people can make a difference in friendships, schools and communities.

The Unified Basketball program is scheduled to begin the week of October 9th.  There will be roughly 1-2 practices each week with approximately 4-6 games. The team will ultimately be made up of both student with and without disabilities.  Our hope is to continue to strengthen our inclusive community and help develop new friendships and meaningful learning experiences for all students.

Any student interested in joining the Unified Basketball team should have his/her parent register them online by visiting the CHS Athletics Website.  Registration info is right in the middle column.
