Light week of Bulldog action due to the holiday recess but there was still plenty to report on.
Boys Basketball extends winning streak…wins tourney- This week saw the Boys Basketball team play in the Blackstone-Millville Regional High School Holiday Hoop Tournament. Canton played Avon in the semi-final match and won 82-66 behind a new career high from Sam Larson who finished with 36 points and 11 rebounds. Matt Kelley had 17 points and 12 rebounds.
In the Championship game Canton amped up the defensive pressure beating Burrillville, RI 73-24. The Dogs knocked down 13 threes and took home the second annual BMR Holiday Hoop Championship. Kelley was named to the all-tournament team and Larson was named tournament MVP.
The two wins extends the Bulldog win streak to 4 games and improves the team's record to 4-1.
Swim Teams perfect over break- Both the Boys and Girls Swim teams went 2-0 over the break with wins over Attleboro and Foxboro. The Foxboro meet saw the Girls win 88-75 and the Boys win 86-68. On Saturday, the Girls outswam Attleboro 90-65 and the Boys won 85-78. The Boys victory over the Blue Bombardiers was not iced until the final relay that saw the 'dogs take 1st and 3rd place. Mike Larsen and Sam Reimer stepped into the 200 IM on the Boys side- a race they had never done and excelled. Sean Mitchell was very strong on the day as was Tim Conway and Matt Chamberlain.
Some great performances on the Girls side were put in by many including- Piper Conway, Aoife O'Mahoney, Tiffany Ha, Julia Guerini, Kelsey Irons, Emilee Mercuri, Erin Martin and Shay Connolly.
Boys Hockey ties up Beverly- The Boys Hockey team continued its very difficult early season schedule on Monday with a 1-1 tie at Beverly. The Bulldogs had a 1-0 lead late, thanks to a John Femia goal but could not hold on for the upset over highly ranked Beverly. Justin Slocum played very well in the Bulldog goal.
Wrestlers grapple at Lowell tourney- The Wrestling team sent several competitors to the annual Lowell Tournament this past week- a tournament which features some of the best wrestlers in New England. The Bulldogs did not disappoint. Quinn Merrigan finished 2nd, falling in a close finals match. Chris Sullivan finished 4th, also losing a close semi-final match. Rob DiCalogero earned 3 wins on the weekend while Wavol Prentice earned 2 wins.
Girls Hockey and Girls Basketball working hard- As far as results go, the holiday break was not kind to the Girls Basketball and Hockey teams. Both teams had difficult schedules and failed to come away with any wins. However, both teams look poised to turn things around as the new year turns. The Basketball team showed great signs of improvement as they played Whitman-Hanson twice over the break and forced a much closer game the 2nd time around. Gabby Kenefick and Kellie Stigas helped force over 12 turnovers while freshman Emma Murphy led the team in scoring with 8 points.
The Track & Gymnastics teams were not in acton over the break.
