Week in Review- 1/13-1/18/14

Bartosek to be inducted into HOF- News was released this week that long-time CHS Wrestling coach Tom Bartosek will be among the class of 2014 Mass Wrestling Coaches Hall of Fame inductees.  The honor appropriately recognizes coach Bartosek for his years of dedicated coaching of high school wrestling in Massachusetts.  Bartosek coached the Bulldog wrestling team from the time he founded the program in the early 1990s until his retirement in 2010. He handed the reigns over to coach Brian Caffelle- a former Bulldog wrestler under coach Bartosek, but the Hall of Fame coach's impact can still be seen in the positive culture of the program.  Canton High School is proud of coach Tom Bartosek's honor.

Boys Hockey earns two big Davenport wins- This week saw the Boys Hockey team dominate Milford in a mid-week shutout of the Sky Hawks, 8-0 and outplay Oliver Ames in a Saturday showdown of the top teams in the Davenport, downing the Tigers, 4-1.

The Milford game featured two goals each by Tony Francescon, Matt Lazaro and Jerry Harding (the freshman's first two career goals), while Ben Lodge and Andrew Howlett also found the back of the net (Howlett's being his career first as well).

The Oliver Ames game was a showdown of the top two teams in the Davenport with 1st place on the line. The 'Dogs responded with a dominating performance. Francescon, Lazaro, Lodge and John Femia each found the back of the Tiger net in the win- moving the 'Dogs into sole possession of first place.

Girls Long Jumpers soar- Many great performances were put in by Bulldog tracksters at Saturday's D-4 State Relay meet at the Reggie Lewis Center. The biggest highlight was a 5th place finish in the Girls Long Jump. Rachel Campagna, Wonser Mahn and Masha Smirnova combined for a great score.

Swimmers continue fine season- Many great performances from the swim teams this week. Tuesday saw the Girls defeat OA, 91-75 and the Boys fall to the Tigers, 89-79. It was a great meet. The week also saw the Girls 200IM relay team qualify for the Sectionals with a time of 2:08.04. The team is made up of Tiffany Ha, Kim Frazier, Julia Guerini and Emilee Mercuri. Ha also qualified for the Sectionals and States in the 200 IM and for the Sectionals in the 100 yd backstroke.

Wrestlers continue to shine- Although the Wrestling team came up short against Foxboro on Wednesday, 50-27, the team has plenty to be proud of this week. Joining the usual winners for the 'Dogs were Steven Corkery and Derek Haas

The team traveled to Woburn on Saturday for a tournament and for the 2nd weekend in-a-row both Quinn Merrigan and Chris Sullivan captured first place. Wavol Prentice took 4th while John O'Brien also earned his first varsity win. The team finished 8th out of the 16 team field.

Gymnasts show great improvement- Although the Gymnastics team dropped two meets this week- Tuesday to NA 122.1-127.7 and Saturday to Attleboro 121.85-137.35, the team's scores are showing improvement from the beginning of the season.

Basketball and Girls Hockey teams fighting hard- Both the Boys and the Girls Basketball teams as well as the Girls Hockey team went into this week hoping to halt winless streaks but, despite some strong efforts, none of the teams were able to stop the skids. However, there were plenty of signs of good things to come.
