Bulldog Nation wants to send out well wishes to three of our teams competing in Hockomock Championship Meets this weekend.
The Boys Swimming Championships kick off the weekend on Friday afternoon at Milford High School.
Saturday morning sees Girls Swimming at Milford, Track at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston and Wrestling at Oliver Ames.
It should be a great 24 hours of competition for our Bulldogs. Good luck!

Game rosters now available on your smart phone
This week saw the introduction of making game rosters available on your mobile device via a QR code.
All of our remaining Hockey and Basketball games will have this option available at the rink and the gym. We will always make our home team roster available via the QR code and will include the visitor's roster when it is made available to the CHS Athletic Office.
If you are familiar with QR codes, you will know what to do when you see it posted on the wall at the rink and outside of the gym entrance.
If you are not familiar with QR codes, this is how it works:

- Go to your app store and search for "QR code reader."
- Install the free app. (you only need to do steps one and two the first time around)
- locate the QR code in the rink or gym (see photo above)
- Open the app and hold your phone up to the code to scan it (pretty self-explanatory)
- Once it is scanned, the roster(s) will pop up on your device
- When you want to revisit during the game, there will be an icon on the QR app that allows you to go to past scanned sights.
It's easy and fast!
You should re-scan for each game so that you can get the opponent's roster (when available).
We hope this will make it easier for our spectators to enjoy the games.
Go Bulldogs!

Week in Review- Jan. 20th thru Jan. 25th, 2014
Track teams split final regular season meet- The Girls Track team defeated Foxboro on Thursday in the final regular season meet of the season, 54.66-39.33 while the Boys Track team fell to the Warriors 32-61.
The girls' victory was led by triple-winner Rachel Campagna who won the 55m, 300m and long jump. Amanda Eagles ran a great 2-mile, winning the race and qualifying for the States. Samantha Koplik won the 55m hurdles.
The boys had many great performances but were just not deep enough to compete with the Warriors. Kenny Ofanagoro won the 55m and the long jump. Liam Collins won the mile, just missing the state qualifying time. Joe Clancy won the 2-mile. Finally, 4x400 team won and qualified for the states- Matt Derbin, Timmy Gutowski, Collins, and Patrick Hession.
Wrestlers down Mansfield- It wasn't too many years ago that a Bulldog win over Mansfield in Wrestling would be next to unheard of. My how things have changed. Monday night saw the Wrestling team convincingly beat the Hornets on the road, 51-22. Rob DiCalogero's OT win against one of Mansfield's best was the biggest highlight of the night. Other winners included Steven Corkery, John O'Brien, Brendan Lewis, Waleed Chakir and Binah Smith (his first varsity win).
The team performed well in a 42-33 loss at Sharon on Thursday, but again, many good performances were put in by the 'dogs.
Boys Hockey earns two big wins- Coach Shuman seems to have the Boys Hockey team hitting stride just as they head into the final weeks of the season. The team fell, 2-1, to powerhouse Newburyport on the road on Monday in a great battle. The two teams are very familiar with each other as they have faced each other in the state final twice in the past five years. The 'dogs played some of their best hockey of the season in the tough loss.
The rest of the the week saw the team earn big wins over pre-season D2 South favorite Medfield, 4-2 as well as a big team victory over Foxboro. The wins improve the team's record to 5 wins, 4 ties and 3 losses.
Multiple goal scorers this week were: Matt Lazaro (2), Ben Lodge (3), and Brendan Logan (2).
Scoring their first career goals this week were: Jackson Maffeo, Sam Nagel, and Bobby Mullaney.
Boys Basketball emphatically ends winless streak- The high-scoring Bulldog Boys Basketball team seemed to be missing for a streak of games of late, but that certainly ended with Friday's 95-72 win on the road at Milford. The team ended a long string of losses to improve to 5-7 and get back in the playoff hunt. Scoring nearly 100 points is something rarely seen in high school basketball but the Bulldogs were on fire. Matt Kelley (33), Sam Larson (30) and Tristan Morris (22) led the way while the team knocked down 14 three point shots.
Girls Basketball comes up just short- You wouldn't know that the Girls Basketball team was still in search of its first victory simply by watching the team's play. Friday was a perfect example as the squad played a very strong game against Milford- a team who had handled the Bulldogs relatively easily in their first meeting. This time was different but the 'dogs fell just short, 34-32. Gabby Kenefick played exceptionally well on defense while Shannon Foley knocked in 3 three-pointers. Caitlyn Hathaway's game winning three point shot attempt in the final seconds just rimmed out leaving the Bulldog's still searching for that elusive win.
Girls Hockey continues to play well- Despite not getting the results they are looking for, the Girls Hockey team continued with some fine play early in the week falling to Whitman-Hanson/Pembroke in a very well played hockey game, 3-2.
The girls' victory was led by triple-winner Rachel Campagna who won the 55m, 300m and long jump. Amanda Eagles ran a great 2-mile, winning the race and qualifying for the States. Samantha Koplik won the 55m hurdles.

Week in Review- 1/13-1/18/14
Bartosek to be inducted into HOF- News was released this week that long-time CHS Wrestling coach Tom Bartosek will be among the class of 2014 Mass Wrestling Coaches Hall of Fame inductees. The honor appropriately recognizes coach Bartosek for his years of dedicated coaching of high school wrestling in Massachusetts. Bartosek coached the Bulldog wrestling team from the time he founded the program in the early 1990s until his retirement in 2010. He handed the reigns over to coach Brian Caffelle- a former Bulldog wrestler under coach Bartosek, but the Hall of Fame coach's impact can still be seen in the positive culture of the program. Canton High School is proud of coach Tom Bartosek's honor.
Boys Hockey earns two big Davenport wins- This week saw the Boys Hockey team dominate Milford in a mid-week shutout of the Sky Hawks, 8-0 and outplay Oliver Ames in a Saturday showdown of the top teams in the Davenport, downing the Tigers, 4-1.
The Milford game featured two goals each by Tony Francescon, Matt Lazaro and Jerry Harding (the freshman's first two career goals), while Ben Lodge and Andrew Howlett also found the back of the net (Howlett's being his career first as well).
The Oliver Ames game was a showdown of the top two teams in the Davenport with 1st place on the line. The 'Dogs responded with a dominating performance. Francescon, Lazaro, Lodge and John Femia each found the back of the Tiger net in the win- moving the 'Dogs into sole possession of first place.
Girls Long Jumpers soar- Many great performances were put in by Bulldog tracksters at Saturday's D-4 State Relay meet at the Reggie Lewis Center. The biggest highlight was a 5th place finish in the Girls Long Jump. Rachel Campagna, Wonser Mahn and Masha Smirnova combined for a great score.
Swimmers continue fine season- Many great performances from the swim teams this week. Tuesday saw the Girls defeat OA, 91-75 and the Boys fall to the Tigers, 89-79. It was a great meet. The week also saw the Girls 200IM relay team qualify for the Sectionals with a time of 2:08.04. The team is made up of Tiffany Ha, Kim Frazier, Julia Guerini and Emilee Mercuri. Ha also qualified for the Sectionals and States in the 200 IM and for the Sectionals in the 100 yd backstroke.
Wrestlers continue to shine- Although the Wrestling team came up short against Foxboro on Wednesday, 50-27, the team has plenty to be proud of this week. Joining the usual winners for the 'Dogs were Steven Corkery and Derek Haas.
The team traveled to Woburn on Saturday for a tournament and for the 2nd weekend in-a-row both Quinn Merrigan and Chris Sullivan captured first place. Wavol Prentice took 4th while John O'Brien also earned his first varsity win. The team finished 8th out of the 16 team field.
Gymnasts show great improvement- Although the Gymnastics team dropped two meets this week- Tuesday to NA 122.1-127.7 and Saturday to Attleboro 121.85-137.35, the team's scores are showing improvement from the beginning of the season.
Basketball and Girls Hockey teams fighting hard- Both the Boys and the Girls Basketball teams as well as the Girls Hockey team went into this week hoping to halt winless streaks but, despite some strong efforts, none of the teams were able to stop the skids. However, there were plenty of signs of good things to come.

The Week in Review- Jan. 6-11, 2014
Wrestlers Shine at Peckham Classic- The 17th Annual Peckham invitational tournament was held at CHS on Saturday. (Click here for a post about the history of the tournament.) The Bulldogs had many great performances in the annual event. The highlight of the day was Chris Sullivan's first place finish. The victory marked the 4th year that Sullivan has won his weight class at the tournament- a Bulldog first. Joining Sullivan on the top of the podium was Quinn Merrigan, who joined some pretty exclusive company as well as he won his weight class for the 3rd year in a row. Rob DiCalogero continued his fine season, advancing to the final and battling hard but settling for 2nd place. Wavol Prentice and Brendan Lewis finished in 3rd in their weight classes while Mike Reese earned a 4th place finish.
Boys Hockey all tied up- The Boys hockey team skated to two ties this week while continuing to show fight and determination in an early season that has seen the team earn ties in more than half of their games (1-2-4). Wednesday's 1-1 draw with Attleboro saw the Bulldogs dominate the Bombardiers in every way except on the scoreboard as the outshot their visitors, 49-6. Matt Lazaro's 2nd period goal evened up the game at 1-a-piece and the 'dogs would have to settle for that as the final score.
The team traveled to Franklin Saturday night for a showdown with Hockomock rival Franklin. This would be the 2nd game of the young season against the Panthers and the Bulldogs were looking to avenge a 5-1 loss in that first match-up. The Bulldogs jumped out to a 2-0 lead on goals by Ben Lodge and Lazaro and played some of their best hockey of the season. Unfortunately, the Panthers fought back in the final period, scoring two goals and the 'dogs had to settle for the point.
Strong week for Indoor Track teams- The Girls Track team earned two huge League wins this week while the Boys split its two meets while putting in some great performances.
The Girls team downed Milford on Tuesday, 53-42 and then earned another win Friday, this time over Stoughton, 48.5-46.5. Tuesday's win over Milford featured some amazing performances. Rachel Campagna was a double winner, besting all opponents in the 55m and long jump while finishing 2nd in the 300m. Catherine Song also earned two first place finishes- winning the mile and 1,000m. Michaela Kelly won the 600 and qualified for the States for her efforts.
The Boys victory over Milford (59-27) was filled with exceptional performances. Somto Ofonagoro accomplished the rare feat of winning three events- the 55m, 300m and the long jump. Liam Collins won the mile and placed 2nd in the 2-mile. Matt Derbin won the 600m and ran the fastest split as the anchor leg for the winning 4x400m team. Dan Bronstein and Joe Clancy had huge personal best in winning the 1,000m and 2-mile respectively.
Boys Basketball jinxed by Globe ranking???- The Boys Basketball team jumped out to a 4-1 start to the season and was rewarded by the Boston Globe with a position in their weekly top 20 rankings. However, in what felt like the Sports Illustrated cover jinx, the team has since suffered three straight losses. This week saw the team lose to pre-season Davenport favorite Sharon and perennial rival Stoughton in two tough road games. The team will look to bounce back with a home game on Tuesday vs. Franklin.
Wins were hard to come by this week for Girls Hoop, Girls Basketball, Gymnastics and Swim teams despite some great signs from all of them.

Peckham Tournament- A CHS Tradition
Courtland Priest in action with coach Rockwell and coach
Caffelle watching on. Priest won his first match of the day.
This year's tournament features 8 teams- Canton, Xaverian, Southeastern Regional, Randolph, Norton, Norwood, Sharon and Somerset-Berkley. It is a battle of some great wrestlers and a special tournament for our Bulldogs.
It was 17 years ago that Tom Bartosek- founder and the first coach of the CHS Wrestling team- created the tournament in honor of James Peckham. Peckham was a legend of Massachusetts Wrestling and is a member of the Wrestling Hall of Fame. The tournament has grown and evolved over the years and has also become a celebration of coach Bartosek- who is really the "father of wrestling" in Canton.
According to CHS senior and State Champion Quinn Merrigan, the Peckham is an extra-special day for CHS Wrestlers because- "It's our tournament. It's at our home. Coach Bartosek created this for us and we feel an added responsibility to do our best today to honor him too."
It's a great day of Wrestling and a great CHS tradition.

Bulldog Tips from the Athletic Office
As our winter season hits its stride and a new year is upon us, we'd like to share some important tips and reminders for CHS athletes and families.
Physical Exams- In order to be eligible for CHS athletics, a student must have a physical exam form from his/her doctor, on record in the athletic office. It is always a good idea to mail a copy of a newly acquired physical exam to the athletic office as soon as the exam is complete. The physical is good for 13 months from the date of the exam. Mailing it in right away is good practice as families wont be scrambling at the start of a season to make sure they have the physical in.
Transportation to Away Games- All student-athletes must ride the bus to and from all away contest. If a parent would like to drive his/her child to and/or from an away contest, a note or email must be submitted to the athletic office PRIOR to the trip. This is to ensure the safety of all of our athletes.
Student Athletes must be in school- Students must be in school in order to participate in athletics on that day. Students who leave school at any point during the day and do not return are not allowed to participate on that day. The only exception would be a documented doctor's appointment.

Week in Review (short week)- Jan. 1 through Jan. 5, 2014
A light half week of action scheduled got even lighter as the late week snow storm moved around quite a few contests. But are some highlights of the week:
Boys Hockey earns big Hock win- Saturday night saw the Boys Hockey team rebound from a tough New Years Day 3-2 loss to Medway with a big 3-1 league victory over North Attleboro. Two Ben Lodge goals and a Kevin O'Brien goal paced the Bulldogs past the Red Rocketeers for their first victory of the season.
Wrestlers sweep Saturday Tri-Meet- Saturday morning saw frigid temps outside, but things were heating up in the Masciarelli Gymnasium as the Wrestling team hosted Xaverian and Northbridge in a tri-meet. The 'dogs started things off with a convincing 49-15 win over Northbridge and followed it up with a huge 45-33 win over Xaverian- a victory that wasn't secured until Wavol Prentice's pin in the final match. Double winners on the day were Derek Haas, Quinn Merrigan, Rob DiCalogero and Chris Sullivan.
Boys Basketball winning streak halted- The Boys Basketball team's 4-game winning streak came to an end on the road Sunday as the squad fell behind host Attleboro early and never really recovered, falling 59-43.
Swimmers perform well against Mansfield- Despite falling to Mansfield in both boys and girls swimming (boys- 73.5-93.5....girls 74-93), the teams performed very well, really challenging the Kelley-Rex power in every event. Some top Bulldog female performers included- Kelsey Irons, Kaitlin McCarthy, Ermilee Mercuri, Kim Frazier, Tiffany Ha, Julia Guerini, Julia Remy, and Piper Conway. On the Boys side- Diego Ferstier, Tim Conway, Kevin Wing, Brian McCarthy and Mike Noone paced the great performance.

Week in Review- 12/23/13-12/31/13
Light week of Bulldog action due to the holiday recess but there was still plenty to report on.
Boys Basketball extends winning streak…wins tourney- This week saw the Boys Basketball team play in the Blackstone-Millville Regional High School Holiday Hoop Tournament. Canton played Avon in the semi-final match and won 82-66 behind a new career high from Sam Larson who finished with 36 points and 11 rebounds. Matt Kelley had 17 points and 12 rebounds.
In the Championship game Canton amped up the defensive pressure beating Burrillville, RI 73-24. The Dogs knocked down 13 threes and took home the second annual BMR Holiday Hoop Championship. Kelley was named to the all-tournament team and Larson was named tournament MVP.
The two wins extends the Bulldog win streak to 4 games and improves the team's record to 4-1.
Swim Teams perfect over break- Both the Boys and Girls Swim teams went 2-0 over the break with wins over Attleboro and Foxboro. The Foxboro meet saw the Girls win 88-75 and the Boys win 86-68. On Saturday, the Girls outswam Attleboro 90-65 and the Boys won 85-78. The Boys victory over the Blue Bombardiers was not iced until the final relay that saw the 'dogs take 1st and 3rd place. Mike Larsen and Sam Reimer stepped into the 200 IM on the Boys side- a race they had never done and excelled. Sean Mitchell was very strong on the day as was Tim Conway and Matt Chamberlain.
Some great performances on the Girls side were put in by many including- Piper Conway, Aoife O'Mahoney, Tiffany Ha, Julia Guerini, Kelsey Irons, Emilee Mercuri, Erin Martin and Shay Connolly.
Boys Hockey ties up Beverly- The Boys Hockey team continued its very difficult early season schedule on Monday with a 1-1 tie at Beverly. The Bulldogs had a 1-0 lead late, thanks to a John Femia goal but could not hold on for the upset over highly ranked Beverly. Justin Slocum played very well in the Bulldog goal.
Wrestlers grapple at Lowell tourney- The Wrestling team sent several competitors to the annual Lowell Tournament this past week- a tournament which features some of the best wrestlers in New England. The Bulldogs did not disappoint. Quinn Merrigan finished 2nd, falling in a close finals match. Chris Sullivan finished 4th, also losing a close semi-final match. Rob DiCalogero earned 3 wins on the weekend while Wavol Prentice earned 2 wins.
Girls Hockey and Girls Basketball working hard- As far as results go, the holiday break was not kind to the Girls Basketball and Hockey teams. Both teams had difficult schedules and failed to come away with any wins. However, both teams look poised to turn things around as the new year turns. The Basketball team showed great signs of improvement as they played Whitman-Hanson twice over the break and forced a much closer game the 2nd time around. Gabby Kenefick and Kellie Stigas helped force over 12 turnovers while freshman Emma Murphy led the team in scoring with 8 points.
The Track & Gymnastics teams were not in acton over the break.
