Let's be great fans!

Hello Bulldog Nation.  It's that exciting time of year when our winter sports all begin their journeys. It's a season where not only our student athletes compete, but so many come to support them from the stands.  It is so important that we all do our part to help our Bulldogs compete and we do so while representing our town, school and ourselves with class and the utmost in sportsmanship.

Some thoughts-

1. Respect the officials. We are currently in the middle of a huge game officials shortage in the state. It is serious enough that it threatens our ability to run our contests. The number one reason given in polls officials leaving the profession is that they are sick of the abuse from spectators.  Canton- let's be better! Please know that we will have a zero tolerance for fans at our contest who verbally berate officials. You will be asked to leave.

2. Respect our opponents. The contest is on the playing surface...not in the stands. Fans should support our Bulldogs while not putting down our opponents.  Negative comments directed at individuals on our opposing teams will not be tolerated. "Our fans are not there to "get in the heads" of our opponents.  Have fun. Be proud. Be loud. Be classy.

3. Respect fellow spectators. Fans of other teams are there for the same reason we are- to support their team. Please avoid any negative interaction with fans from other teams.

4. Have fun! Enjoy the games!

Feature: Reagan Vozzella, CHS Cheer Alumna Class of 2022

Submitted by CHS Cheer Coach- Stephanie Parker

Vozzella in action for
Assumption this fall
Reagan Vozzella, former captain of the Canton High cheer team, is off competing at the collegiate level at Assumption! During her time at CHS, Reagan was a varsity member for four years, and competed with the Bulldogs at base position for three years.

This year, Vozzella attends Assumption University in Worcester as a freshman, and a college athlete on the varsity cheerleading team. She cheered during the fall football season, and is committed to cheering during the winter basketball season as well. Changing over her position to flyer, Reagan is now at the top of the pyramid and has improved her tumbling skills which has earned her a spot on the competition team, the only freshman to do so this year. She and her team are preparing to compete at the college national cheer competition which takes place in April.

When asked about her experience cheering in college Vozzella shared the following-

Vozzella with CHS Cheer
Coach Stephanie Parker

“I couldn’t picture what college would be like this far without having my teammates. I just feel really blessed to be able to further my cheerleading career with such amazing people at a university that could not be more perfect for me. Being in an entirely new stunting position this year has really taught me a lot about how much your mindset impacts your performance. I am just so excited to keep pushing myself and my team as athletes to really show others what we are capable of and am looking forward to competing with them this spring.”

As her high school coach, I am so happy to be a part of Reagan’s journey and watch her evolve into a college athlete. I could not be prouder of the improvements she’s made and her scoring a spot on the competition team her first year. I look forward to seeing her cheer throughout her time at AU.

Congratulations to Reagan on the completion of her first season and go hounds!

CHS Varsity Field Hockey Coach Chrissy O'Connor had this to say-

Galvin named Head Boys Lacrosse Coach

The CHS Athletic Department is thrilled to announce that Tom Galvin will be taking over the reigns of our Boys Lacrosse program beginning this spring.

Coach Tom Galvin in action
back in the day for the Bulldogs!

Galvin has served as an assistant coach with the program since the 2021 season and has made a major impact on the team and our student athletes since that time.  He also is part of our fall coaching staff where he has been an assistant football coach for the past two seasons.  A 2015 graduate of Canton High School, Galvin was a great player and leader for the Bulldog boys lacrosse team before heading off to a four-year lax career at Assumption College.  He is currently a guidance counselor at Quincy High School.

Galvin had this to say upon the announcement of his hiring-
"I am thrilled to have the opportunity to coach Varsity Lacrosse for Canton High School. As a lifelong athlete of Canton, I am invested in the program and its core values. I look forward to sharing what I have learned with my platers and creating a successful program at CHS."

Galvin bring a ton of passion and energy to our program- not to mention a very high lacrosse IQ.  His ability to build strong relationships while being a great role model makes him a great person to hold this important role on our coaching staff.  The Bulldog athletic staff is thrilled to see him as our next head coach.

He was a three-year wrestler at CHS who served as a captain during his senior year.  Matt brings with him to this position, a passion for the sport and a great appreciation of the history and tradition of CHS Wrestling.  During his days on the Bulldog mat, he was a sectional finalist and placed at the States and was the first heavyweight in CHS Wrestling history to qualify for the All-State Tournament.

Matt, who is currently a senior at Bridgewater State University, had this to say upon the official announcement- "I am both honored and ecstatic, to be named the new head coach of the Canton High School Wrestling program. CHS Athletics partners with PCA

The CHS Athletic Department is excited to announce that we have partnered with Positive Coaching Alliance (PCA) for the 2022-23 school athletic year.

PCA is a national non-profit developing “Better Athletes, Better People” by working to provide all youth and high school athletes a positive, character-building sports experience.  The partnership provides CHS Athletics access to PCA’s training for coaches, sports parents, student-athletes and administrators, through live group workshops, online courses, books by PCA Founder Jim Thompson and additional online resources, such as follow-up tips and reminders.

PCA has partnered with roughly 3,500 schools, districts, conferences, youth sports organizations and park-and-rec departments to create a Development Zone® culture, where the goal is using youth and high school sports to develop Better Athletes, Better People. “We look forward to working with Canton High School to create the best possible experience for the student-athletes," said Positive Coaching Alliance CEO, Chris Moore.  “Our research-based materials combine the latest in sports psychology, education and practical advice from top pro and college coaches and athletes that help improve athletic performance while also ensuring kids take life lessons from sports that will help them throughout the rest of their lives.”

CHS Athletics is so excited to re-establish this relationship with PCA. The organization has continued to grow and make a  huge positive impact on the high school sports experiences of so many.

A big shout out to the CHS Booster Club for supporting this important initiative.

Our partnership kicks off with two big workshops this month-

Friday, September 23rd at 11:30- Captains Workshop during early release time.

Tuesday, September 27th- Coaching Workshop for all CHS Coaches.

We are very excited for both of these!

Memorial Field Bleacher project

The CHS Athletic Office would like to let all student athletes, parents/guardians, opponents and fans know that the CHS WWII Veterans' Memorial Field home-side bleachers have been replaced this summer in a town-funded capital project.  Yet another example of this town supporting our student athletes.  Thank you!

The bleacher replacement project is NOT YET COMPLETE and therefor the home side bleachers are NOT YET available for use.  We are optimistic that they will be open for use by 9/15/2022.

Game Tickets will be Digital this School Year

After experimenting with digital ticketing during the 2021-22 school year, the CHS Athletic Department is excited to announce that game day tickets to Bulldog home game will be exclusively digital beginning this fall season. That means purchasing our tickets will only be possible through GoFan- a digital platform on your smart phone.

This move allows the CHS Athletic Department to track ticket purchases in a format which accounts for all purchases in a much more organized fashion. It also embraces the reality that fewer people are carrying cash with them these days. Moving to digital ticketing provides an easy, quick way to purchase your tickets and gain entry at our gates.

Tickets this fall will be on sale for the following events-

  • All Home Varsity Football games
  • Evening/Night Soccer Games
  • All home tournament games for Football, Soccer, FH and Volleyball
The CHS Athletic Office is fully aware of the fact that some of our fans may initially struggle with the move to digital ticketing.  People who struggle with the system, will NOT be turned away from our games.  We also ask that you are patient with us as we implement this new procedure. We will make sure Bulldog event staff is present to assist.

It is important to note that our prices are not changing. A general admission ticket is typically $5 and a senior citizen ticket is typically $3. That is what it will cost our fans to attend.

There is no need to upload the GoFan app to your phone but it may make the process a little simpler for you.

Here are the ways to purchase tickets moving forward:

1. Pre-purchasing tickets- This is the way to go!!!! Visit our page on GoFan and follow instructions to purchase tickets. Link to CHS GoFan page  Your tickets will be emailed to you. You must have access to that email on your smartphone when you arrive at the gates.

2. Purchasing at the gate- If you wait to purchase tickets at the gate, the process will take a bit longer. CHS Athletic event staff will be present at the gate to assist in these purchases. You will need a credit card to make the purchase.  A smart phone makes the purchase much easier.

The CHS Athletic Department is excited and proud to announce that after many delays and curve balls over the past several years, the championship banners that hang in our gym- The Ralph Masciarelli Gymnasium- have been updated, rearranged, and installed in a way that will make any Bulldog fan happy!

Beyond team state titles, there are so many impressive Bulldog accomplishments- both team and individual- now acknowledged on those four walls. It embodies everything we expect in all of our Bulldogs- perseverance, sportsmanship, and hard work as well as daring and achieving greatly!

Change at the top of Bulldog Cross Country program

Exciting times in the CHS Cross Country program as long-serving coach, David Hiltz, is moving on to pursuit other opportunities in educational leadership.  His successor is Brian Gotsell, who comes to CHS from Oliver Ames where he has been a coach and teacher for several years.

Bulldog Nation is sad to see Coach Hiltz go. He has been a key member of our fall coaching staff since taking over the Cross Country program a decade ago.  During that time, the Bulldog Cross Country program made huge strides forward including establishment of a new home race course at Pequitside Farm- an accomplishment spearheaded by Hiltz. His effort, care and commitment to his student athletes was always clear.  His impact here has been significant.

Taking the reigns from Hiltz, Gotsell brings a great deal of energy, knowledge and passion for the sport to CHS XC. His experience includes-
  • Four years as Assistant Cross Country Coach at OA
  • Seven years as both an indoor and outdoor Assistant Track & Field Coach at OA
  • 1 year as Track & Field Coach at Easton Middle School

Newly appointed XC
coach- Brian Gotsell
Originally from Winchester, Massachusetts, Gotsell graduated from Stonehill College before moving on to be a History teacher at Oliver Ames High School- where he has been for the past ten years. He ran the Chicago Marathon in both 2019 and 2021 and is currently training to run the Philadelphia Marathon this fall.

He had this to say upon his official appointment to the role of Head Boys and Girls Cross Country Coach-

"I am excited for the opportunity to become the Head Boys and Girls Cross Country Coach at Canton High School.  Canton Athletics has such a strong legacy and history.  I cannot wait to join it. I am looking forward to bringing my knowledge and passion for the sport to the harriers of Canton Cross Country."

CHS Athletics wishes the best to both Coach Hiltz and Coach Gotsell as they begin these next chapters in their journey in education/athletics.

Petrich named new Head Girls Varsity Hockey Coach

Nikki Petrich during her playing
days at Northeastern University
The CHS Athletic Department is thrilled to announce the hiring of Nikki Petrich as our new Head Girls Varsity Ice Hockey coach.

Petrich comes to CHS with a wealth of hockey experience- both coaching and on the ice.  Her most recent coaching position has been as the associate head coach of Austin Prep's Girls Hockey team.  During her time with AP the team has advanced to the MIAA D1 State Championship game at the Garden three times (2019, 2020, 2022) and has taken home the top prize twice (2020, 2022).

Petrich takes over a program at CHS that has plenty to be proud of as well- advancing to the Garden for 4 of the past 6 seasons under retiring coach Dennis Aldrich

Although originally from the Midwest, her hockey playing career brought her to Boston where she played for Northeastern University's Women's Hockey team. She was awarded a full athletic and academic scholarship to play and attend NU where she ultimately served as team captain. She was awarded NU's coveted Reggie Lewis Award for academic and athletic excellence.

Petrich had this to say upon her appointment to the coaching position-

“With a dream women’s ice hockey season cemented in the record books forever at Austin Prep and after being part of such a special group of players and families for more than 5 years, I am forever grateful to the AP community, but beyond excited for my next opportunity. Canton Bulldogs, I am bringing my knowledge, experience, passion and love for the game to the women’s ice hockey team to continue and move forward the success of the program. Canton community, let’s goooooo!!!”

CHS could not be more excited to welcome coach Nikki Petrich to our community.  We look forward to seeing what the next chapters for the CHS Girls Hockey program will bring.

Praik making CHS Cheer proud at UCONN

Submitted by Stephanie Parker- CHS Cheer coach

Elissa Praik was an integral part of the CHS Cheerleading team during her years here. Elissa’s cheer story is a little unusual as her cheer career was interrupted by both personal life challenges as well as the challenges of the pandemic. During Elissa’s junior year she was awarded the unsung hero. Her unusual senior year when cheer ran during “wedge” and spring seasons, she represented Canton cheer as captain. Praik showed tremendous perseverance and tenacity and was a role model to her younger teammates on and off the mat.

This year, Praik attended the University of Connecticut as a freshman, and a college athlete on the varsity cheerleading team. She cheered for during both the UCONN football and basketball seasons, even cheering at games during The Elite Eight of March Madness. Praik is an incredible leader; she is a hard worker, has the kindest heart, and always looking to help others and give back to others.

When asked about her experience cheering in college Elissa shared the following: “
UConn Cheerleading has been a once in a lifetime experience. I’ve made so many connections and best friends while getting to continue my passion for cheer. I cheered at numerous March Madness games and traveled with the basketball teams. Being a part of a collegiate team is a special opportunity that has taught me so much more teamwork, leadership, and perseverance.”

As her high school coach, I am so proud to have had Elissa on our bulldog team and love seeing her excel at the collegiate level. I look forward to seeing her on the UCONN sidelines for the years to come.

Congratulations to Elissa on the completion of her first year! Go Huskies!
