CANTON HIGH SCHOOL’S DAVE BOHANE NAMED NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS HIGH SCHOOL COACH OF THE WEEK

Foxborough, Mass. – Canton High School’s Dave Bohane has been named this week’s New England Patriots High School Coach of the Week in recognition of his team’s victory over Oliver Ames High School. A true team effort, five different Bulldogs scored touchdowns in the game to edge out the Tigers, 40-14. The divisional win advances the Bulldogs record to 5-1 overall and 3-1 in the Hockomock Davenport Division. To recognize this achievement, the New England Patriots Charitable Foundation will donate $1,000 to Canton High School’s football program in Bohane’s name in recognition of his Coach of the Week selection.

“Congratulations to Canton High School, Coach Bohane and his players,” Tippett said. “This year’s Canton team has shown real resiliency and determination with three huge overtime victories en route to an impressive 5-1 record. To quote Coach Bohane, ‘The Bulldogs are special, they are tough, and they never give up.’ Coach Bohane has been nominated for this honor every week, and I’m very happy to finally present it to him.”

At the conclusion of the season, one high school coach will be named the New England Patriots High School Coach of the Year and will receive an additional $2,000 contribution toward the school’s football program.

Tennis Anyone?

It's been nearly 30 years since Canton High School students and Canton residents have had the opportunity to play on brand new tennis courts in town.  That will all change on November 2nd as the doors will open to the five brand new tennis courts at Canton High School.

The old courts had been in disrepair for years but still served as the home for our tennis teams, PE classes and hundreds of local tennis players. In 2014, the School Committee and Board of Selectmen worked with the Capital Outlay Committee and with a combination of various funding sources- a large part of which came from the CPA (Community Preservation Act) were able to get the project underway.

The actual work on the surface of the courts is now complete, but the facility will not open until Monday, November 2nd as the next two-plus weeks are critical to the curing process.

The Canton Athletic Department would like to thank all those who worked so hard to make these brand new courts a reality!

Student Athlete/Parent Night kicks off Athletic Year

By Marissa Kleinbauer

On Monday nigh, September 28th, in the Canton High School Auditorium, CHS athletic director Danny Erickson greeted the hundreds of athletes in attendance for the Annual Canton High School Athletics night, a night dedicated to educating the athletes of the 2015-2016 season about the importance of safety, growth, and determination. After hearing the encouraging story of Matt Brown, a 2012 graduate of Norwood High School, who was paralyzed his sophomore year during a hockey game, and listening to the presentation of Marathon Physical Therapy, now partnered with Canton High School, it was time for the moment the entire audience had been eager to witness; the unveiling of the Canton High School logo and brand.

“I’ve always been of the opinion that as a high school, we should have one unifying mark that brings us together,” says Mr. Erickson. Canton High’s new partnership with Adidas/Reebok spurred the process of creating the brand. Mr. Erickson later explained that the process of developing the new logo took about a year.

The unveiling of the logo was met with applause and cheers from athletes and parents on Monday night. The brand included the Canton “C”, which thoughtfully included the shape of the Viaduct arch, a staple landmark in Canton. It also included how the Canton name would now be written, and finally, the new bulldog, a bulldog original to Canton High School.

The feedback from Canton High student-athletes was one of excitement and gratitude that the school now had their own logo, instead of the multiple other logos that had been used for teams, clubs, and events.

“Before, hockey had one logo and softball had another, but now we all have one,” says Canton High junior Molly Loughran, who is currently on the cross-country team.

The logo is already featured on T-shirts that were for sale on Monday night, and multiple students were seen proudly wearing the logo on Tuesday morning and throughout the week.

Mr. Erickson explained that when Adidas/Reebok offered to produce a brand for Canton, CHS principal Derek Folan and him were eager to work with them.

“Mr. Folan and I immediately said, ‘bring it on, please do it’, and it kind of goes from there,” Mr. Erickson recalls. “Mr. Folan and I met with them several times; we had a large focus group that met with them and we were all excited about it, and we think we now have a mark that we can all be proud of.”

The new logo will soon be worn on athletic uniforms, apparel, and will continue to provide a sense of identity and unification throughout the Canton community.

Football loses heartbreaker to Foxboro

By Amanda Romano

On Friday, October 3, the Canton High School Football team suffered a devastating defeat against Foxboro High School. Foxboro won 10-7, stealing the lead in the second half from Canton with just minutes to go. Mike Mahon, a senior on Canton High’s team, gave his opinions on the defeat, “We played a great game. They were a great team. (We) had our shots, (we) played a great game.” Mahon shared similar opinions with the rest of the team, they all agreed they gave it their all and are still proud of how they played.
The stakes were high for this game, both teams in the Davenport league had won three of three games they played this year: One team would leave the field 4-0 and one would be 3-1. The boys prepared themselves for the game per usual, and while coach David Bohane ran through plays, the boys in the locker room prepared, too.
Defenseman Jude Albert was exceptionally excited for the game. He said, “I’m only a sophomore playing on varsity, it’s a big moment. I’m going to probably remember this game for the rest of my life.” And that he will. He matched himself up against some of the tallest Foxboro players, and blocked a lot of possible touchdowns for Foxboro. Even though Foxboro eventually scored, Albert played amazing defense. Sophomore Louis Bois, also described this game as the “biggest game for a long time,”
The boys suffered a hard loss but they all tried their hardest, and in the end, both teams played an amazing game. Senior, Woanyen Mahn thought the same thing, “I think we played pretty well, I mean we played pretty hard, all the guys were going as hard as possible, I mean we were stopping them almost every down. We got a few big plays and they got a few lucky plays, a couple lucky breaks.”.

Boys Soccer earns 0-0 draw with 1st place Mansfield

By Anis Chakir

The Canton Bulldogs Boys’ Soccer came short of doing what everyone believed they couldn’t, beat Mansfield at Gillette Stadium. The Bulldogs didn’t pick up the win, but they did go home with a 0-0 tie against the top rated Kelley-Rex team. The Bulldogs played a tremendous game defensively, Sophomore goalkeeper Abe Garber earned his first shutout of the season. Mansfield attempted a ridiculously high 15 corner shots, but the Bulldogs defense refused to budge. The Bulldogs were clicking defensively, the problem was that the Bulldogs couldn’t find their rhythm offensively. The Canton Boys’ Soccer team has little to be ashamed of considering they were able to tie with one of the best teams the Hockomock League has to offer.

Girls Soccer Team wins at Gillette!

BY Charlie Malloy

In the second high school game played last night at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, the Girls Varsity soccer team came up with a huge win against Mansfield. They beat the second place team in the Kelley-Rex division 2-1 on goals from Hannah Link and Sarah Connolly. Link, a junior, scored early on in the first half, while the Bulldogs dominated control of the ball for the first 40 minutes. The second half game was more even, despite a penalty kick goal by sophomore Sarah Connolly . Canton gave up a goal late in the second half, but was able to hold on for a strong, bounce-back victory after a loss to Attleboro on Monday Night. They remain atop the Davenport Division with a record of 6-2 and 12 points.

In between halves, the JV teams from the two schools scrimmaged for 15 minutes. The JV Girls Bulldogs fell short 1-0, but played a tight game.
