Bulldogs shine during this Championship week- Highlights- Jan. 26-31, 2015

It was a Blizzard-shortened week of Bulldog action but it certainly didn't lack some great team and individual efforts.

Girls Hockey upsets Duxbury- The Girls Hockey team stunned the defending D2 state champion Dragons in a dramatic 5-4 home win on Thursday. A Mary McNeil hat trick, an amazing goal by Mary Claire Thompson and a game-winner by Kelsey Trerice, paced the huge victory. Most impressive in the win was the tenacious way the Bulldogs held off a Dragon onslaught in the 3rd period including killing off a 5-on-3 power play for the visitors. The Bulldogs fell in a close match-up with Barnstable, 2-1 on Saturday but both Barnstable and Duxbury are ranked in the top 5 by the Globe. The Bulldogs have cracked the top 20 as well! The Boston Globe Girls Hockey Top 20.

Dicalogero crowned at Hock Wrestling Championship- Rod Dicalogero capped off an incredible Hockomock Wrestling career at Saturday's Hock Championships taking home his 2nd consecutive title in his 3rd straight appearance in the finals of his weight class (this year- 145). The victory came over Attleboro's Nick Gould (16-2).  Also advancing to the finals of his weight class was Reda Chakir while Brendan Lewis finished 3rd.

Melendez grabs two Golds in Hock Championship Swim Meet- Sebastian Melendez finished 1st in the 200 Free (1:46.08) AND in the 500 Free (4:46.80). It's been many years since the Bulldogs have had a gold medal winner at the Hocks....let alone someone winning twice!  Many other great performances were put in by Bulldogs on the day including Tiffany Ha coming in 3rd in the 100 Back stroke and 5th in the 100 Breaststroke.  Owen Guerini placed 4th in the 50 Free in a time of 24.74. Sean Mitchell swam to 5th place in the 100 Breaststroke while Dan Nadeau placed 10th in both the 100 Breaststroke and the 100 Fly.  Diego Ferstler placed 10th in the 100 Free (56.60). Amanda Walsh swam exceptionally well- finishing 4th in the 200 Free (2:12.27) qualifying for the Sectionals.  Julia Guerini place 8th in the 50 Free in 28.24.  In relay action- the team of Ha, Emilee Mercuri, Guerini, and Kim Frazier finished 7th in the 200IM.  The 200 Free relay saw Ha, Mercuri, Frazier and Guerini finish 6th. The team of Walsh, Kaitliyn McCarthy, Kelsey Irons and Brianna Mitchell finished 9th in the 400 Free relay.  On the boys' relay side, the 400 relay team of Mitchell, Nadeau, Guerini and Melendez finished 4th. Best of luck to all of the swimmers moving on to Sectionals and States.

Tracksters shine at Championship Meet- Saturday saw many Bulldogs perform extremely well at the Hock Championships at Reggie Lewis.

The top Boy performer was Liam Collins, who finished 3rd in the mile in a personal best time (4:35.71.)  Mark Clancy, who has been a strong, consistent runner all season, finished 4th in the 2-mile (10:27.47.)  Collins and Clancy were joined by Timmy Gutowski and Andrew Moy in a strong relay performance- finishing 6th in the 4x800.

The top Girls performer was Cat Song, who finished 2nd in the mile. Selena Cho finished 3rd in the 55m and also grabbed bronze in the long jump (16'3".)

Other Notables this week- The Boys Basketball team snapped a bit of a losing streak with a 61-49 win at Milford.  The Girls Hoop team came up just short in a bid for their first Hock victory of the season, falling 46-48 to Milford. The Boys Hockey team played a strong game against league rival Franklin, jumping out to a 1-0 lead, but they were unable to hold off the Panthers who came back to score 2 goals in the 3rd to defeat the 'dogs.
