Coach Fior Griffin announces she is leaving her position

People often over-use the phrase "time flies," but in this case it seems very appropriate.  It feels like just yesterday that Fior Griffin came to CHS to become our varsity Field Hockey coach.  It was actually nine years ago.  And after nine successful seasons at the helm, she has decided to move on from her CHS field hockey family to focus on her own growing family.

Griffin stated the following in an email to the parents of her players- "I am so proud to say that I was part of such a special team...family.  I have given my all to being their coach, and it has been an amazing experience.  I will carry with me such great memories.  But as my own children are getting older, I find that I need to focus on their needs at this time."

Griffin came to CHS fresh off a highly successful playing career at Northeastern University.  She brought a wealth of field hockey knowledge and a fiery passion for the sport with her to CHS.  Over her nine seasons here, she used that knowledge and passion as a foundation for a coaching career that saw her become more effective working with high school athletes each and every season.

There are many different challenges new coaches take on when they take over a varsity program.  Sometimes, a coach is charged with trying to take a struggling program and make it competitive.  That can certainly be a big task.  However, a strong argument can be made that it may be even more challenging to walk into a successful program, and be sure that that level of success in maintained.  That is the story of coach Fior Griffin.  She took over one of the most successful Field Hockey programs in the state and she managed to maintain that high level of success for nearly a decade.

The CHS Athletic Department would like to thank coach Griffin for her dedicated service and leadership over the past nine years. We are proud to have had you as our coach over that string of successful seasons. We wish you and your family the best of luck in the future- and hopefully some additional family time next fall!

Successful fall season winding to an end

Thanks go out to our fall athletic programs- student athletes, coaches, and fans for starting off the 2015-16 season with a bang.  There were tons of successes that we can all be proud of.

Our Cheerleading team, who are in action today at an invitational at Whitman-Hanson High School, once again qualified for the Regionals with an amazing performance at the Hocks.

Our Girls Soccer team finished 2nd in the Davenport and earned a #3 seeded in the D2 South Tournament, where they went on to defeat league rival Foxboro before falling to Midfield.

Our Boys Soccer team was honored by the Hockomock League coaches with the Sportsmanship Award for representing CHS with exceptional class and sportsmanship all season long.

Our Boys and Girls Cross Country teams continued to show massive improvement this season.  Moving their new home course to Pequitside Farm helped to symbolically mark the start of the next stages of the program's success.

Our Golf team continued its phenomenal run of success, dropping only 3 matches all year long. The team's average score this fall was amazingly low.

Our Field Hockey team started slow but really hit its stride by October and made an astonishing run in the D1 South MIAA Tournament, earning huge upsets over Bridgewater-Raynham and Norwood before falling to perennial power (and eventual Sectional Champ) Walpole.

Our Volleyball team continued its run of dominance through the Hockomock for yet another season, winning the League/Divisional title for the 9th straight season. They also advanced to the Central Sectional Final for the 3rd time in the past 4 seasons.

Finally, our Football team had an amazing run through the regular season, posting a 5-2 record and treating us all to a wonderful brand of football. The 5-2 record represented the team's best campaign in decades and really caught the attention of all of southeastern Mass Football. The team will look to end the season with a victory over Stoughton on Thanksgiving- 10:00am at CHS.

Tournament Update- Volleyball rolls...Girls Soccer and Field Hockey bow out

Monday night saw the #3 seeded Volleyball team win its opening match of the D2 Central Tournament, 3-0 (25-17. 25-17, 25-19)over #6 seeded Milton. The Quarter-Final victory highlighted some amazing and dominating play by the home Bulldogs in front of a packed gym. The team will travel to Medway Thursday night at 7:00 to face the #2 seeded Mustangs in Sectional Semi-Final action.

Field Hockey's Cinderella story came to an end on Sunday at #2 seeded Walpole (a perennial D1 power) as the Bulldogs fell 3-1. The game was tied at 1-1 at the half on a goal by Colleen Phelan, but two 2nd half goals by the Rebels kept the Bulldog's hopes of a 3rd straight road upset from happening. The #23 seeded Bulldogs had previously beaten #10 seed Bridgewater-Raynham and #7 seeded Norwood to advance to the Sectional Quater-Final Round. It was an amazing run.

#3 seeded Girls Soccer defeated league rival and 14th seeded Foxboro 2-0 to advance to the D2 South Sectional Quarter-Final round where they fell by that same score to visiting Medfield.  Tessa Cudmore and Hannah Link scored the Bulldog goals in the first round win. The loss to Medfield was a great battle seeing both teams creating chances, but two late Medfield tallies ended up eliminating the Bulldogs. They had a tremendous season.

An amazing goal by Tessa Cudmore on a strike from the corner of the field came just 27 seconds into the game, and set the tone for what would be a great Bulldog performance. Hannah Link scored mid-way through the 2nd half to ice the victory for the #3 seeded Bulldogs.

The team will host #6 seeded Medfield High School on Saturday afternoon at 4:00pm in the D2 South Quarter-Final Round.  Tickets are $6 for adults and $4 for students/senior citizens. No Booster passes accepted for tournament games.

Student Blog Entry- Field Hockey ready for Norwood

By Melissa Kleinbauer
After a challenging regular season and a 7-6-3 record, the Canton field hockey team has seen a demanding season, standing in fourth place in the Hockomock Davenport league. However, the team rallied to capture a spot in the MIAA playoffs. Last Wednesday, at Bridgewater-Raynham High School, the Bulldogs pulled through to a triumphant 1-0 victory, qualifying them to move onto the 2nd round of playoffs: an away game tonight against Norwood.

Norwood and Canton have faced each other once this season at Norwood High School in late September, with Norwood, who has a 13-4-1 record, triumphed over Canton.

“We know they have a lot of speed and have a couple of really strong players but we just came out flat last game,” says senior captain Lindsey Nolte. “If we play up to our potential, then we will most definitely give them a good game.”

Canton will be facing the Norwood Mustangs after school today at 2:30pm at Norwood Senior High School. Best of luck to our Bulldogs!

Field Hockey Advances to Face Norwood

The #23 seeded CHS Field Hockey team played a tremendous game on Wednesday afternoon, defeating #10  seeded Bridgewater-Raynham on the road, 1-0 behind a Lindsey Nolte goal and plenty of strong performances. Canton fans were out in force for this preliminary round game, played on a well-groomed grass field on a beautiful November afternoon.

The win sets up a showdown with #7 seeded Norwood, a team the Bulldogs have played often in recent seasons. The game will be played at 2:30 at NHS on Friday, November 6th. The two teams played earlier in the season with the Mustangs besting the Bulldogs, 2-0. The 'dogs will be out for a different result this time around.

Swim Team Update- New Coach and Important Meeting

The CHS Athletic Department is happy to officially announce the hiring of Cheryl Cavanaugh as the new Head Coach for the CHS Boys and Girls Swim Team. Cavanaugh takes the reigns from long-time coach Lori Mooney, who retired from the post after many successful seasons.

Cavanaugh brings a wealth of experience to CHS. She was the founder and first coach of the Walpole High School swim team and has served in that role for the past 31 years. She is currently still the Walpole High School Fall Swim coach. She was named Coach of the year in 2008. She has also worked with Walpole Youth Swimming (3-18 year olds) for 41 years.

It is rare that a candidate with such a depth and width of experiences comes along. We are very lucky to have her on board.

Bulldogs will get a chance to meet coach Cavanaugh on Monday, November 9th at 2:30 in the CHS Library. This is a MANDATORY but brief meeting for anyone interested in joining the swim team this winter. Coach will be taking sign-ups and swim suit size info.

Volleyball team looking to post-season

The Lady Bulldogs also finished the regular season as Hockomock Champions. The Bulldogs head into the state tournament later on this week as a likely candidate for the state title. Canton’s volleyball team established themselves as a threat, despite shocking losses to King Philip and Duxbury. With a 15-3 record—including victories against league rivals North Attleboro, Mansfield, and Oliver Ames—the Bulldogs are not a team to sleep on in the state tournament.

Tennis Anyone?

It's been nearly 30 years since Canton High School students and Canton residents have had the opportunity to play on brand new tennis courts in town.  That will all change on November 2nd as the doors will open to the five brand new tennis courts at Canton High School.

The old courts had been in disrepair for years but still served as the home for our tennis teams, PE classes and hundreds of local tennis players. In 2014, the School Committee and Board of Selectmen worked with the Capital Outlay Committee and with a combination of various funding sources- a large part of which came from the CPA (Community Preservation Act) were able to get the project underway.

The actual work on the surface of the courts is now complete, but the facility will not open until Monday, November 2nd as the next two-plus weeks are critical to the curing process.

The Canton Athletic Department would like to thank all those who worked so hard to make these brand new courts a reality!

Student Athlete/Parent Night kicks off Athletic Year

By Marissa Kleinbauer

On Monday nigh, September 28th, in the Canton High School Auditorium, CHS athletic director Danny Erickson greeted the hundreds of athletes in attendance for the Annual Canton High School Athletics night, a night dedicated to educating the athletes of the 2015-2016 season about the importance of safety, growth, and determination. After hearing the encouraging story of Matt Brown, a 2012 graduate of Norwood High School, who was paralyzed his sophomore year during a hockey game, and listening to the presentation of Marathon Physical Therapy, now partnered with Canton High School, it was time for the moment the entire audience had been eager to witness; the unveiling of the Canton High School logo and brand.

“I’ve always been of the opinion that as a high school, we should have one unifying mark that brings us together,” says Mr. Erickson. Canton High’s new partnership with Adidas/Reebok spurred the process of creating the brand. Mr. Erickson later explained that the process of developing the new logo took about a year.

The unveiling of the logo was met with applause and cheers from athletes and parents on Monday night. The brand included the Canton “C”, which thoughtfully included the shape of the Viaduct arch, a staple landmark in Canton. It also included how the Canton name would now be written, and finally, the new bulldog, a bulldog original to Canton High School.

The feedback from Canton High student-athletes was one of excitement and gratitude that the school now had their own logo, instead of the multiple other logos that had been used for teams, clubs, and events.

“Before, hockey had one logo and softball had another, but now we all have one,” says Canton High junior Molly Loughran, who is currently on the cross-country team.

The logo is already featured on T-shirts that were for sale on Monday night, and multiple students were seen proudly wearing the logo on Tuesday morning and throughout the week.

Mr. Erickson explained that when Adidas/Reebok offered to produce a brand for Canton, CHS principal Derek Folan and him were eager to work with them.

“Mr. Folan and I immediately said, ‘bring it on, please do it’, and it kind of goes from there,” Mr. Erickson recalls. “Mr. Folan and I met with them several times; we had a large focus group that met with them and we were all excited about it, and we think we now have a mark that we can all be proud of.”

The new logo will soon be worn on athletic uniforms, apparel, and will continue to provide a sense of identity and unification throughout the Canton community.

Football loses heartbreaker to Foxboro

By Amanda Romano

On Friday, October 3, the Canton High School Football team suffered a devastating defeat against Foxboro High School. Foxboro won 10-7, stealing the lead in the second half from Canton with just minutes to go. Mike Mahon, a senior on Canton High’s team, gave his opinions on the defeat, “We played a great game. They were a great team. (We) had our shots, (we) played a great game.” Mahon shared similar opinions with the rest of the team, they all agreed they gave it their all and are still proud of how they played.
The stakes were high for this game, both teams in the Davenport league had won three of three games they played this year: One team would leave the field 4-0 and one would be 3-1. The boys prepared themselves for the game per usual, and while coach David Bohane ran through plays, the boys in the locker room prepared, too.
Defenseman Jude Albert was exceptionally excited for the game. He said, “I’m only a sophomore playing on varsity, it’s a big moment. I’m going to probably remember this game for the rest of my life.” And that he will. He matched himself up against some of the tallest Foxboro players, and blocked a lot of possible touchdowns for Foxboro. Even though Foxboro eventually scored, Albert played amazing defense. Sophomore Louis Bois, also described this game as the “biggest game for a long time,”
The boys suffered a hard loss but they all tried their hardest, and in the end, both teams played an amazing game. Senior, Woanyen Mahn thought the same thing, “I think we played pretty well, I mean we played pretty hard, all the guys were going as hard as possible, I mean we were stopping them almost every down. We got a few big plays and they got a few lucky plays, a couple lucky breaks.”.

Boys Soccer earns 0-0 draw with 1st place Mansfield

By Anis Chakir

The Canton Bulldogs Boys’ Soccer came short of doing what everyone believed they couldn’t, beat Mansfield at Gillette Stadium. The Bulldogs didn’t pick up the win, but they did go home with a 0-0 tie against the top rated Kelley-Rex team. The Bulldogs played a tremendous game defensively, Sophomore goalkeeper Abe Garber earned his first shutout of the season. Mansfield attempted a ridiculously high 15 corner shots, but the Bulldogs defense refused to budge. The Bulldogs were clicking defensively, the problem was that the Bulldogs couldn’t find their rhythm offensively. The Canton Boys’ Soccer team has little to be ashamed of considering they were able to tie with one of the best teams the Hockomock League has to offer.

Girls Soccer Team wins at Gillette!

BY Charlie Malloy

In the second high school game played last night at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, the Girls Varsity soccer team came up with a huge win against Mansfield. They beat the second place team in the Kelley-Rex division 2-1 on goals from Hannah Link and Sarah Connolly. Link, a junior, scored early on in the first half, while the Bulldogs dominated control of the ball for the first 40 minutes. The second half game was more even, despite a penalty kick goal by sophomore Sarah Connolly . Canton gave up a goal late in the second half, but was able to hold on for a strong, bounce-back victory after a loss to Attleboro on Monday Night. They remain atop the Davenport Division with a record of 6-2 and 12 points.

In between halves, the JV teams from the two schools scrimmaged for 15 minutes. The JV Girls Bulldogs fell short 1-0, but played a tight game.

Captains Reflect on Hockomock Captains' Conference

Last Thursday, our 28 Fall athletic captains attended the Hockomock League Fall Captains Workshop at Oliver Ames High School. The day featured leadership training activities and speakers on the topic. It also allowed all of the fall captains from the 12 league schools to meet each other in a setting other than the arena of competition. It was a great day. Here are the reflections of the day from 4 of our fall captains. They are truly amazing.

Reflection of Lindsey Nolte (Field Hockey Captain) Today I spent my day with many other student athletes in an auditorium learning about the importance of being a leader. Although only a few players on each team are able to wear a "C" on their jersey, anyone is able to lead. Being able to be followed, respected, hardworking, on and off the field is an ideal image of being a role model. It takes a group of determined leaders to become champions. To be able to set a goal and focus on that goal until it is turned into a reality. How each individual helps each other to focus, to excel, and to turn away from others negativity, will result in success. Being able to help others, and to do something that people want to follow, is a strength leaders must have. And always remember, “Watch your thoughts. They become words. Watch your words. They become deeds. Watch your deeds. They become habits. Watch your habits. They become character. Character is everything.”- Frank Outlaw.

Reflections of Woanyen Mahn (Football Captain) As athletes we are responsible for representing the school through everything we do. We are seen by everyone and we must set a positive example. That means working hard on and off the field- leading in the classroom and in games. Also, we are privileged to do what we love and compete against others. We must stay humble because we are the lucky few. People often forget that not everyone gets to participate in high school athletics. So take advantage of this opportunity and show people the right way to play sports.

Reflections of Casey Bradley (Girls Soccer Captain) Today the CHS fall captains traveled to Oliver Ames High School to attend the fall Hockomock captains conference. It was truly a learning experience. It made me realize how much your actions affect others. As a captain it is your duty to lead by example. For example trying to always stay positive is a part of your role. Positivity is always key. No matter what you go through in life being positive will always make the situation better. Being a part of a team means coming together and setting a common goal. If you write down your goal, and look at it every day, you are more likely to achieve that goal. Your goal will never come true if you don't truly believe that you CAN do it. Make sure your team is constantly motivating each other. Every time you step on the field you need to play for one another. Dig deep, set a goal and achieve it together. Be grateful for all you have in life and always appreciate the people who support you along your journey. Positive people. Positive thinking. Physiology.

Reflections of Courtland Priest (Cross Country Captain) The fall captains’ conference today proved to be a memorable experience; many of the lessons learned by the captains are also applicable to the general athletics scene here at Canton High and to the way all high schoolers should be prepared to conduct themselves in life. The renowned motivational speaker Ed Gerety placed significant emphasis on positive attitude over the course of his presentation; the attitudinal path that a person chooses to take can truly make or break not only a captain’s career but the relationship between teammates, classmates and friends. In captainship, a positive attitude carries over to the rest of the team, to a very great extent; this tends to bolster the athletes’ motivation and desire to succeed. Conversely, if a captain displays a poor attitude, the team’s success will be inhibited- simply because they are less willing to possess that drive that makes a team good. In being a member of the Canton High athletics community, a positive attitude also opens doors- an upbeat, willing athlete will get along better with their coaches and teammates. That synergy- the mutual respect, friendship and desire to win, among the entirety of a particular team’s athletes and coaching staff- is what makes teams succeed. For an athlete playing at the interscholastic level, positive attitude is arguably the single most important trait to possess, far more vital than physical fitness or individual athletic skill to the success of a team.

Mr. Gerety also touched upon the importance of maintaining that positive attitude- I was struck by his scenario in which one person verbally displays their negative attitude with derisive comments, and the other responds with “Thanks for sharing”. There truly is no credible response to that simple statement; it embodies the most effective method of combating negative attitude. Negative attitude must be stopped, whittled away at, and dissipated wherever it is encountered. Like an infectious disease, bad attitude is prone to propagating in a population (a suitable example of such a population being a team), but can be easily stopped if addressed appropriately. The best cure for negative attitude is countering it with positive attitude and preventing it from spreading. If a particular team or other group of people is overwhelmingly positive, negative thoughts and feelings simply cannot take root; this speaks to the importance of good attitude throughout the entire athletics community and throughout the high school at large. There is simply no way that a team (or other group) with a popular negative mindset can succeed more often than a similar group with a widespread positive attitude. It starts with the individual. It’s up to everybody on a team, in a group, in a classroom or elsewhere to ensure that the overall attitude is positive. That’s the way we win.

First Official CHS Logo/Brand to be unveiled on September 28th

Canton has long been home of the CHS Bulldogs but in all those years, we have never had a single, shared image that we can all identify with as representing CHS.  We've had scores (probably hundreds) of "Bulldogs," "C's," "CHS's" on our uniforms, sweatshirts, websites, letterhead, signs, etc. but on Monday, September 28th, that will all change. At our Parent/Student Athlete presentation we will be unveiling the product of a one year process that will help us unify under one image and brand.  We will be officially sharing our new CHS Bulldog brand/logo.

Principal Derek Folan is entering his 4th year at the helm at CHS.  During that time he has led with a motto of "Be ONE. Move Forward."  And yet, if you walk the halls of CHS you will not see a single, image that we can all unify behind. We see some great images but not a single image that represents us all.

We are excited to all unify under one new mark! We look forward to seeing you for the unveiling on Tuesday!

Just check out some of the CHS Bulldog logos we have used over the just past several years:

and here is a piece of what will be part of our new identity....
Stay tuned for more pieces of the puzzle as Monday approaches!
