Dear Bulldogs-
Each year the CHS Athletic Department convenes in the CHS Morse Auditorium to honor the graduating class of Bulldogs. Athletic Department Secretary Mrs. Duffett, Trainer Kristen, our Head Varsity Coaches and I all welcome the graduating seniors and many of their parents for a night where we celebrate the highlights of the past Bulldog year, bestow Varsity Letters to all those who have earned them and also present some individual awards to members of the class. It is truly a highlight of my job as Athletic Director.

This year- this tradition of convening will not take place, BUT that is not stopping us from honoring this class of student athletes. Bulldog student athletes from all grades, but especially the class of 2020, I hope you will take the time to get together with family and make your way through our presentation virtually.
Simply follow through this blog entry from top to bottom, clicking on video where you are able to. Most of the content is video (which totals roughly 42 minutes) but the limited amount of text provided is equally important. I realize that this cannot take the place of us meeting as our Bulldog community as a whole, but I hope it will serve as an appropriate send-off to the student athletes of the class of 2020. Enjoy!

Joining the class of 2020, moving on from their CHS coaching roles, are two of our long-serving head coaches- Coach Kate Howarth and Coach Dave Bohane. Both Coach Howarth and Coach Bohane have given so much to our Bulldog student athletes over the past decade. We all owe them a great deal of thanks.
Coach Kate Howarth has been our Girls Varsity Soccer Coach for the past seven seasons. She has amassed a career record of 73 wins, 49 losses and 13 draws and led her Bulldogs to the MIAA State Tournament in each of her seven seasons at the helm.

Coach David Bohane has been our Varsity Football Coach for the past 9 years. During that time he has rebuilt the program into a regional power. The past two years have been epic- seeing the Bulldogs post a combined record of 18-4 with two visits to the Sectional Finals and two Hockomock Davenport titles. He remains on as our Bulldog Varsity Softball Coach.

The Record Book on The Class of 2020
121 of the 239 students in the class- roughly 50%- earned varsity letters during their time here.
Three sport letter winners- The number of recipients seems to shrink each year. They are a dying breed. This year 10 student athletes received 3 varsity letters during their senior year. As one of the smallest schools in the league, the three-sport athlete is critical to the successes of our teams.

(Correction- two additional students were identified as having earned 12 letters- Grace Yong and Kerri McGrann. They were not included in the video below. Apologies to them and congrats!)
Our Boys and Girls Hockey programs were honored for their top-notch sportsmanship, earning the Hockomock League Sportsmanship Award. Thanks to these programs for setting a classy tone for the rest of our programs and fans.
We had 7 Hockomock League Davenport Titles- Golf, Football, Field Hockey, Girls Volleyball, Boys Ice Hockey, Girls Swimming and Girls Ice Hockey. So- in the two seasons of competition that made up the 2019/20 season, our Bulldogs won 7 of 18 possible League Championships. Considering there are six schools in the Davenport- our fair share of Championships should be three. We more than doubled that number- led by the class of 2020!
2019/20 saw many of our teams qualify to compete in post season MIAA tournaments: Golf, Girls Soccer, Field Hockey, Volleyball, Football, Girls Basketball, Boys Hockey, and Girls Hockey.
Our Cheer team advanced to the Regionals in both the fall and winter seasons.
Our Unified Basketball and Unified Track teams had their best seasons ever.

Individuals on our XC and Gymnastics teams led their programs to their most successful seasons in many years. Individuals on our Track teams, Swim teams, and Wrestling team have broken CHS records and advanced deep into state and sectional competitions including a State Championship by Eddie Marinilli in Wrestling.

Our state tournament performances were highlighted by a whopping three teams winning the State Championships- Volleyball and Girls Hockey each lifting the Championship Trophy for the first time ever while Boys Hockey added their 3rd ever State Title and their 2nd in-a-row.

Each year- the CHS Athletic Department recognizes several graduating seniors who have been outstanding in some area of educational athletics. Recognizing individuals among so many qualified is very difficult and there are many worthy members of the class of 2020 who will not receive these awards tonight. However, I am excited to announce our 2019/20 Senior Athletic Award winners- all very deserving young men and women.
Below is a list of our individual awards. Click away and enjoy!

Varsity Letter's Earned by Members of the Class of 2020
Click on video below for message about Varsity Letters, Pins and Certificates.
Some important notes-
- The criteria for receiving a varsity letter is determined by the head coach of that season with approval of the athletic director. Simply being on a varsity team does not always guarantee the earning of a letter.
- Given the Covid-19 impact, we have decided that any member of the class of 2020 who registered to join a program in the spring has earned a varsity letter for that season.
- Listed below are the sports and years of high school in which the recipient earned a letter, indication of being a captain in that sport during senior year, indication of Hockomock League All-Star status during senior year, and State Champion status during their senior year. Other individual honors bestowed by other groups like newspapers, etc. are not noted.
- Mistakes are possible on this list for many reasons including head coaching turn-over and other record-keeping errors. If you feel your letters are in error, please reach out to the CHS athletic office via email (ericksond@cantonma.org) to inquire. (Please let us know of any typos as well!)
- A huge THANK YOU to Athletic Department Secretary Denise Duffett who's tireless work makes all of these award possible. She is the best!
