Members of the Class of 2024 honored at Senior Banquet

The Senior Banquet was held on Wednesday, May 29th at CHS's Morse Auditorium.  Thanks to the best coaching staff in the state for taking another night away from your families to come honor our Bulldogs. It was a night full of celebration.

111 of 210 graduating seniors received varsity letters in each of their sports. That marks roughly 55% of the class earning letters.

(Big shout out to Lucas Massih- who served as an Athletic Dept. extern this spring and spearheaded the Varsity Letter project. He was amazing at this!)

Here are some Bulldog Highlights from the 2023-24 school year- led by this amazing class:

Hock Sportsmanship Award- Boys Hockey

Hockomock Davenport Titles- Volleyball, Girls Swimming, Boys Hockey, and Girls Hockey (outright Hock champs)

MIAA State Tournament team qualifiers- Girls Soccer, Football, Field Hockey, Volleyball, Boys Hockey, Girls Hockey, Boys Basketball, Girls Lacrosse and Boys Lacrosse, and Unified Track and Field.

Deep MIAA Tournament Run-
State Finalists- Girls Volleyball

We also bid farewell to four key members of our Varsity Coaching staff- all have made a huge contribution to CHS Athletics.

  • Coach Nikki Petrich, Girls Hockey- Coach Nikki joined us two years ago and has led her team to two amazing seasons, collectively amassing a record of 38-7-4 and advancing to a State Final year one and the Elite 8 this year. A great role model- Coach Nikki will be greatly missed. We wish her all the best in her next step in her coaching journey.

  •  Coach Kelly McGowan, Girls Lacrosse- It’s only been several months since Coach Kelly McGowan was named our head Girls LAX coach, but it feels like she has been at the helm much longer than that. Coach McGowan stepped up to fill a big void left by coach Bradley and did not disappoint. We cannot thank her enough for all she has done for our Girls LAX program this spring.

  • Coach Stephanie Parker, Cheer- Coach Parker- a beloved CHS teacher- joined our coaching staff as our head Cheer coach back in 2019. Since then, she has shown amazing commitment and dedication to her student athletes and her teams. She navigated coaching an indoor sport during the pandemic and never lost sight of the safety of her kids. She was critical in expanding the program to include a JV team for the first time in many years. Thank you Coach Parker! (Click Here for previously posted blog entry regarding Coach Parker's departure.)

  • Coach Jimmy Choquette, Girls Basketball- Coach Choquette has been a steady, caring, committed, passionate head coach of our girls basketball program for the past 11 years. During that time, he has lead his teams to great successes but most importantly, he has led his teams with great sportsmanship, teamwork, camaraderie and care. I want to personally thank him on behalf of the entire CHS Athletics community, for all he has done for so many Bulldogs over the years. (Click Here for previously posted blog entry regarding Coach Choquette's departure.)

Kolokithas and Gray honored as Hock Scholar-Athletes

Thursday night saw the Hockomock League hold one of its most cherished, special events of the year when it hosted the Hockmomock League Scholar Athlete banquet.

Each year for more than 30 years, the Hockomock comes together in May to honor two student athletes from each of the 12 Hock schools.  Two graduating student athletes from each school are selected for excelling in both the classroom and on the playing field. It is really the award that best exemplifies and honors those who embrace the mission of educational athletics.

It is extremely difficult to select recipients given that so many Bulldogs prioritize the "student" part of being a student athlete.  Canton's two award winners this year were Mercia Kolokithas and Dominic Gray.  Both Kolokithas and Gray have earned amazingly high GPA's during their four years at CHS, while also contributing greatly to the many teams they have been a part of.

Mercia Kolokithas has participated on many Bulldog athletic teams during her four years here, including Unified Basketball, Unified Track & Field, Lacrosse, and Volleyball, but it was in the Basketball program where she really excelled. A three-year varsity contributor and leader, Mercia successfully navigated both highly successful seasons as well as more challenging campaigns. Regardless of the season, she was always an amazing role mode. AND- she set a new school record for 3-pointers in a game with NINE in one of the final days of her career. She will be attending Cornell University in the fall.

Dominic Gray has been a poised, hard-working leader of the Bulldog Cross Country, Indoor Track and Spring Track and Field teams since he first walked into the halls of CHS four years ago. He eventually would go on to earn nine varsity letters in those sports and act as a three-sport captain. His ability to lead as a great teammate is one of his greatest strengths. A team-first student athlete, he excelled while never seeking the spotlight- a true sportsman. He will likely attend Babson College in the fall.

The CHS Athletic Department proudly wishes both of these soon-to-be graduates, the best of luck in the next chapters of their lives.
