Marinilli makes Bulldog Wrestling History (again)

I couldn't believe it when I heard the news.  No Bulldog wrestler had ever won their weight-class at the Lowell Winter Break Tournament until yesterday.  Our team has been competing in this tournament since long-before I became the school's athletic director (15 years ago) and yesterday was the first time any CHS wrestler stood atop the podium at this prestigious tournament----the first one ever.

Eddie Marinilli, who began re-writing the CHS Wrestling record-book long before taking the mat at Lowell this week, took home the Tournament Championship at the 145 weight class.  He has already taken home Sectional and State Titles but winning this tournament is quite the accomplishment.  The tourney features some of the best competition in New England from 76 schools. Yes, 76 schools. And Marinilli outlasted all challengers at his 145 weight class.

Watch out for this Bulldog grappler as he is already in the discussion for "Best Bulldog Wrestler of All-Time" and he is just barely into the 2nd half of his career. Congrats to Eddie!

Final Round of Pat Walsh Memorial Hockey Tourney set for Saturday

In what has become an annual holiday event here in Canton, the Pat Walsh Memorial Girls Hockey Tournament held first round games on Thursday with Canton High and Westwood High advancing to the Championship Game on Saturday at 3:25 at the Canton Ice House.

The first round saw the Bulldogs defeat Midfield High School 3-2 in double overtime.  (The game will be officially recorded as a 2-2 tie on the official MIAA record.) The Westwood Wolverines punched their ticket to the final be defeating Milton, 4-1.  The Bulldogs and Wolverines have faced off several times in the Walsh Tournament since it began three seasons ago.  The consolation game will be played between Medfield and Milton at 1:25 Saturday at the Ice House leading up to the big clash of local titans at 3:25.

Head on down to the rink to support the Bulldogs and honor the memory of Pat Walsh.

Coach Joe Roache honored at pre-game ceremony

Last night was a great night for CHS Hockey as both the Boys team and Girls team earned big wins over Hockomock League rivals and both remained undefeated on the season.

Coach Joe Roach with CHS Boys Hockey captains during
the pre-game ceremony held on December 19, 2018.
But more importantly, the CHS Hockey community came together prior to the Boys game at the Ice House to honor former CHS Boys Hockey coach Joe Roache. It was a wonderful tribute to a great man.  He is part of a history of CHS Athletics that continues to move us forward today. Thanks Coach Roache.

Below is an excerpt from what was read prior to face-off last night.

Joe Roache graduated Canton High School in 1969. He was a member of the first ever Canton High School hockey championship team in 1967 when the Bulldogs finished on top of the South Shore League. Teaching and coaching became his calling, and Coach Roache returned to Canton High School where he taught English to students for 35 years. For 16 of these years, he was behind the Bulldogs hockey bench as a trusted assisted coach for the legendary Don Smith and helped transform Canton High School into a hockey powerhouse. In 1989, he took over the program and had an outstanding career as a head coach for eight years. Coach Roache’s trademark passion and intensity helped his teams earn four league titles and a trip to the 1994 state semi-final game.

Canton Youth Hockey has Joe Roache to thank for the success of the Saturday morning learn-to-skate program. When Coach Roache took over “Learn-to-Skate” in 1981, there were only 30 children in the program. A few years later, that number grew to over 100, where it remains today.

Coach Roache dedicated his career to teaching and coaching in the Canton community, but he has devoted his life to his family. He is the loving husband of Marilyn, who was also an English teacher at Canton High School. He is the proud father of former Bulldogs hockey players, Joe Jr. and Brian, and a devout grandfather to four wonderful granddaughters.

We would like to take a moment to honor the many contributions that Coach Roache made to the Bulldogs hockey program and to our community. Canton is a special town that shares Coach Roache’s love of hockey, family, and community spirit. His legacy lives on through those players who played for him, the Bulldogs who stand on the ice tonight, and those who will wear the Canton hockey jersey in the future.

2018-19 Boys Varsity Basketball Season dedicated to Coach Badoian

All members of the 2018-19 Boys Basketball
program are wearing this patch on their
uniforms this season.
Click Here for a really great video piece on the night done by CHS teacher Ed McDonough.

As Bulldogs everywhere know, we lost a true giant this fall with the passing of long-time educator Marty Badoian.  "Long-time" doesn't adequately describe his actual tenure in our building, nor can any words appropriately represent the impact he has had on tens of thousands of students over the past 60 plus years.

In recent decades, Mr. Badoian has been known in the halls of CHS, as the most masterful of all math teachers and the coach of the wildly successful CHS Math Team.  But, what most modern-day Bulldogs don't know is that Mr. Badoian was once the fiery coach of the Boys Varsity Basketball team and in 1970, he led his Bulldogs to the Hockomock League Championship- an accomplishment which would not happen again for 22 years.

The original 1970 Hockmomock Championship Banner will
be proudly hanging in the CHS Masciarelli Gymnasium for
the entire 2018-19 campaign.
In celebration of the life of coach Badoian, the 2018-19 Boys Varsity Basketball season has been dedicated in his honor and in honor of the 1970 Championship team.

At the team's first home game last night, a touching pre-game ceremony took place to officially tip-off the coach Badoian/1970 memorial season.  Coach Badoian's wife Linda and two of his former Bulldog Basketball players, Tom Hannon and Jim Foley, were present- sharing stories with the crowd of this amazing man's accomplishments, style and values.

The night was capped off with a big Bulldog win over rival Foxboro. Coach Gordy and the team worked hard for this big Davenport victory, but Coach Badoian certainly had a hand in this Hock win as well.

Post-Script- If you haven't yet read this accounting of Mr. Badoian's life, it is worth your time.

Bulldogs near or at top of standings in many fall sports

With the fall regular season coming to a close over the next week or so, many Bulldogs teams find themselves in the hunt for a Hockomock Davenport Championship.  Here is an accounting of those teams in the title hunt:

Football- Friday night's 39-0 victory at home pushed the gridiron 'dogs' record to 6-0 and a 4-0 mark in the Hock Davenport with just one game to play in the regular season.  That game is against 3-1 North Attleboro next Friday- October 19th at 7:00pm at CHS.  NA is the only team in the Dav that can catch the Bulldogs but nobody in the League can surpass them.  Therefore, the Bulldogs have already clinched at least a share of the Hock Davenport Crown- its first League title since 1990.  The Bulldogs would win the title outright with a victory over North Attleboro on Friday.

Golf- The Bulldog Golf team stands with a League record of 7-1 with two matches remaining and hold a slim lead over Sharon (6-2) for the top spot in the Davenport. The Bulldogs need one more win this upcoming week to clinch at least a share of the title.  A 2nd win this week would give the Hock Davenport back to Canton for the 2nd straight season.

Volleyball- After relinquishing the Hock Davenport crown for the first time in 11 years during the 2017 season, the Bulldog Volleyball squad is back and playing amazing volleyball in 2018  As of today, the team's record stands at 11-1- good enough for the top spot in the Hock Davenport with just 4 matches remaining.  Plenty of work left ahead of the 'dogs if they want to earn back the title they held for a decade, as the Black Knights of Stoughton are sitting at 10-2.  The 'dogs will travel to Stoughton on Monday for a huge match where a victory would put the 'dogs in a commanding lead in their quest for the Davenport Title.

Field Hockey-  It's a two horse race for the Davenport in Field Hockey as our Bulldogs are sitting right behind Foxboro for the top-spot.  A loss on the road to Foxboro earlier this week certainly made the challenge all the greater but the Bulldogs certainly have the ability to earn every point ahead of them.  They will just need a little help along the way if they want to reclaim the title they earned in 2017.

Boys Soccer- The Boys Soccer team find themselves in second place in the Hock Davenport with a record of 6-2-3, but within striking distance of first place Milford (7-1-2). The Bulldogs fell to the Scarlet Hawks earlier in the season (2-1) at home and will certainly need to beat the top team on their field the second time around as well as battle through a tough set of Davenport games to finish the season.

Other Bulldog teams this fall might be out of league contention, but are performing well.  The Girls Soccer team has been playing great soccer but results have been hard to come by. They currently sit in 3rd place in the Davenport.  The Boys Cross Country team currently sit in 3rd place in the Davenport with a 2-2 mark while the Girls Cross Country team sits at 1-3 but is improving each race.  The Unified Basketball team is off to a great start as they have already won their first game. The Cheer team's competition season is about to get underway so good luck to them!

  • The Golf match vs. Stoughton at Easton CC has been postponed. The match will be played on 10/17 at 3:30pm.

The Canton High School Athletic Department and the CHS Student Services Department are happy to announce the return of a Unified Basketball team for the 2018-19 Fall/Winter Season.

Special Olympics Project Unify is an education-based project, funded by the US Dept. of Education, that uses the sports and education programs of Special Olympics to activate young people across the US. In order to promote school communities where all young people are agents of change- fostering respect, dignity and advocacy for people with disabilities.  Canton High School and Special Olympics believe that through sports young people can make a difference in friendships, schools and communities.

The Unified Basketball program is scheduled to begin the week of October 1st.  There will be roughly 1-2 practices each week with approximately 4-6 games. The CHS Athletic Department will be kicking off the school year with an important meeting for student athletes and parents on Tuesday evening, September 25th at 7:00pm in the CHS Morse Auditorium. The evening will conclude no later than 8:15pm.

We are thrilled to welcome our Keynote Speaker- Monica Livingston- from Positive Coaching Alliance. She is a dynamic presenter who will be speaking to our audience about competing and life lessons.  Check out her bio here.

Ms. Livingston's visit is made possible by the work of our CHS Athletic Booster Club. The Boosters, which is celebrating its 11th anniversary year, make opportunities like this possible. We hope that you will become a booster member today to help support programs like this and others in the future.

Attendance at the meeting is required of all CHS athletes (for all three seasons) and it is asked that each athlete is accompanied by a parent/guardian.  Parents will NOT be disappointed in taking the time to listen to Ms. Livingston's message. When one door closes.....Next moves after team cuts

Late August is always a very exciting time around a high school athletic department and Canton High School is no exception. This is the time of year when our fall sports season kicks off and our student athletes are readying to get back to school and to the fields. It's a time of year of hope, promise, excitement and potential. Unfortunately, this time of year can also bring painful news to some aspiring student athletes. It's the time of year when some of our student athletes are being cut from teams.

Roster cuts are a necessary evil of high school athletics. We strive to make opportunities available to as many of our student athletes as possible, but teams and rosters have their reasonable limits.

As I get closer to 3 decades of working in the CHS Athletic Department, I have seen countless examples of student athletes getting cut from one sport, only to go out for another and realize that they had a talent that they had never recognized before. Our Cross Country team is currently still accepting new-comers at practice. Other extra-curricular clubs become much more available to students who don't play a fall sport. Who knows, maybe the next great distance runner or star of the Robotics team at CHS had been an aspiring Field Hockey, Soccer or Volleyball player. Who knows, maybe it's you.

Feel free to reach out to the Athletic Department if you are looking for next moves.

Thanks for the Boost!

Please consider supporting Boosters!

2017-18 was a great year for CHS Athletics! We accomplished a great deal.  But without the support of our amazing Booster Club, much of the experience would have been incomplete.  On behalf of all CHS student athletes and coaches, we want to say THANK YOU to the CHS Athletic Booster Club for all you did for us this year.

Here are some of the big purchases the CHS Athletic Booster Club supported this year:

Sky High end zone camera for filming
football games from a great angle.

HUGE Bulldog banner in the gym. It really
completes the home court advantage!
Speaking of banners- Boosters updated or purchased more than a
dozen championship banners this year alone!

32 new chairs for our home games in the gym.
Volleyball, Wrestling and Basketball will benefit
from these for years to come,

Bringing in guest speaker Aaron Polansky to kick-off
the athletic year for our student athletes and parent
with a message of being good to each other.

This contraption is called a shoot-away and it
allows our basketball players to train much more
effectively, both in-season and in the off-season.

New media backdrop and table cloth.  Our Bulldogs will now
sign their college NLI's and pose for other important ceremonies
with this professional backdrop.

New photos were purchased to replace those hanging in the
athletic hallway for each of our sports!
That is just a small fraction of the great things the Boosters do for us!

They also:
  • Increased their support of all banquets and senior nights.
  • Continued to fund much needed scrimmages for our programs.
  • Provided Championship recognition for our Championship teams.
  • Funded a huge portion of Strength and Conditioning costs for our teams.
  • Provided Bulldog gear for our coaching staff so that our programs look professional.
  • Help out with any gaps that exist that they can fill!

2017-18 Hockomock League Sportsmanship School of the Year!

2018-19 Fall Bulldog Captains were presented the Sportsmanship Award by the Hockomock for 2017/18 school year
Canton High School was informed at a Hockomock League meeting today, that the Bulldogs are the official winner of the 2017-18 Hockomock League Sportsmanship Award.

The Hock Sportsmanship Award winner is determined annually using a point system based upon how the coaches of each of the league's sports vote on the level of sportsmanship displayed by each team. The top three vote-getting teams in each sport are awarded points which go toward an overall tally. At year's end, the tallies are added up and we are so proud that this year, the Bulldogs came out on top.

"It was a key pre-school year goal for our coaching staff to go out and set a sporting, classy tone that could possibly result in this honor this year," explained CHS Athletic Director Danny Erickson. "It is a great feeling to know that our coaching staff set such a positive, sporting, classy tone while our student athletes handled themselves with such great sportsmanship both in the arena of competition and in the stands.  It is a proud moment for me and should be for all Bulldogs."

It took many acts of sportsmanship- both large and small- over the entire school year to be honored with this award. Every handshake, cheer, extended hand, slap on the back, kind word, and biting of tongue led to this award.

Special shout out to the following individual programs for earning top recognition in their respective sport towards this honor- Softball, Wrestling, Girls Basketball, Girls Hockey and Boys Soccer.

Boys LAX advance while Softball bows out

In a busy day of CHS MIAA tournament action, the Softball team fell to Dighton-Rehoboth while the Boys Lacrosse team defeated Sandwich.

The Softball team fell victim of a rough first inning but hung tough the rest of the way, falling to D-R, 8-0 in the first round of the tournament.

Things went better down the Cape where the Boys LAX team ousted the #3 seed from the tournament, 11-10.  The Bulldogs were down by four goals early in the 3rd, but an explosive 3rd quarter led to a huge upset win and a ticket punched to the Semi-Final Round next Tuesday.   The Dogs will face #2 Scituate on Tuesday at Scituate High School at 6:00pm.

Ticket prices are $7 and $5.

We will hear from the students on June 18th- NEW DATE

As part of the CHS Athletic Department Strategic Plan, student members of the Wellness Leadership class will be making public presentations on Monday night, June 18th at 5:30pm in the CHS Library (this is a new date). There will be four separate presentations- one on each of the following four areas of study:

  • Facilities
  • Consistency of Coaching
  • Equity throughout the Department
  • Strength and Conditioning

The Wellness Leadership class has been working on studying these four areas in sub-committees since January. The groups have collected data, taken inventories, conducted interviews, taken polls and discussed the topic in great detail- all in an effort to make this presentation.  The presentations will provide a student group perspective on the current state of the four areas as well as recommendations on where to go next in order to help the athletic department move forward towards excellence.

Each group's presentation will be roughly 20 minutes long. This is the culminating activity in this project based learning project that has been the core of the Leadership Class's 2nd semester.

Meanwhile- adult coaching groups have been meeting all year long in committees looking at the same areas from a coaching perspective.  CHS Administration will be using the findings of both the student and coaching groups to create objectives for growth for the department heading into the 2018-19 school year.

All interested members of the public (parents, coaches, teachers, fans) are welcome to attend these presentations.  We hope to see you at the library on June 12th!
