Attention Spring Season Hopefuls

With just two weeks left in the 2nd academic term of the school year, the CHS Athletic Department would like to remind all of our student athletes to finish the term strong! We are hoping for another term in the books where our student athletes are among the highest performing students in the school!

It is important to remind all Spring Student Athletes that your academic eligibility for the spring season is based on your 2nd Term Grades....not 3rd Term. Therefore, if you are planning on trying out for a spring sport, you must meet the academic eligibility requirements based on your 2nd Term grades.  So- if you are in danger of failing or not passing a course 2nd term, it's not too late! Finish the term strong! No regrets!

A letter from the CHS Boys Hockey Team

Dear High School Hockey Players, Parents, and Fans,
Tonight’s contest (Tuesday, January 12 at 7:30pm at the Asiaf Arena in Brockton) between Stoughton High School and Canton High School is more than just another hockey game. At the start of the first period, we will be making a young man’s dream come true. Matty Marcone is a senior at Canton High School. He has been the boys’ hockey team manager since his freshman year, and he is beloved by his teammates and coaches of past and present. In Canton, we call Matty, “The Mayor” because he knows everybody and everybody knows him. Talk to Matty for two minutes, and you will see that he has one of the purest, kindest hearts of anyone you will ever meet.
Matty loves hockey, and he is good at it. However, he has never been able to play youth hockey or high school hockey due to a variety of health issues he has endured for his entire life. In September 2012, Matty was diagnosed with dyskeratosis congenita (DC), an extremely rare genetic disorder that results in premature bone marrow failure at an early age. Sadly, there is no cure. However, Matty’s health issues have not stopped him from living life to the fullest. He is a passionate Bruins fan, a dedicated
team manager for three high school sports teams, a hard working student, a proud member of the Boston Bear Cubs hockey program, a loyal friend, and a loving son and brother.
Matty’s dream is to put on his school’s hockey jersey and take the ice with his teammates. Thanks to Coach Dan Mark and the extraordinary sportsmanship of the Stoughton High School hockey team, Matty will get this chance tonight. Not only will he skate one shift in a varsity hockey game, but hockey fans may just get to see a little of the “Matty Magic” that his teammates have seen so many times over the years.
We are deeply thankful to Coach Mark and his players for making tonight possible.Tonight embodies what high school sports are all about, as we are about to make a young man’s dream a reality.
Sincerely,
The Canton High School Boys Ice Hockey Team

Looking for memorabilia from Canton High's Athletic past

In the past year, the Canton High School Athletic Boosters supported a project to build display cases along the athletic hallway at CHS. Rather than load these particular cases up with modern-day plaques and trophies, we are looking to create a "Walk Through Bulldogs Past" in these display cases.

Spikes worn in 1961 by Jerry Govatsos- setting school
long jump record
We have some amazing pieces of Bulldog memorabilia spanning as far back at 75 years. However, we are in search of more.  We are looking for all things Bulldogs- particularly pre-1980. It may be a uniform, photograph, game ticket, personal or team award, etc. We would love it to come with a story we can share as well.

For example- Canton High alum and current Canton resident Jerry Govatsos donated the spikes he wore in 1961 when he set the long jump record at CHS- 21'10". These will be on display as part of the "Walk Through Bulldogs Past."

We are looking for similar artifacts. Although beggars shouldn't be choosers, we don't expect to use everything we receive, but if you think you have something- or know someone who has something- that we may want to have as part of this display, please contact the Athletic Office at CHS.

Thanks and go Bulldogs!     ericksond@cantonma.org-   781-820-9486

Peckham Wrestling Tournament- A Canton Classic

It was 19 years ago that Wrestling Hall of Famer coach Tom Bartosek- founder and the first coach of the CHS Wrestling team- created a Canton Wrestling tournament in honor of James Peckham.  If you visit the CHS gym today, you will find hundreds of local wrestlers competing on 3 mats in what has become an incredible annual event here at CHS.
Wrestling is underway at the 19th annual PeckhamTourney

Peckham was a legend of Massachusetts Wrestling and is a member of the Massachusetts Wrestling Hall of Fame as well. The tournament has grown and evolved over the years and has also become a celebration of coach Bartosek- who is really the "father of wrestling" in Canton.

The Bulldogs are now coached by Brian Caffelle- one of Bartosek's most impressive wrestlers back in his wrestling days. Caffelle has done an amazing job in keeping this local tradition alive and thriving.

Competing this year are the following schools- Academy of Math and Science, Canton, King Philip, Mansfield, New Bedford, Norton, Norwood, Randolph, Sharon and Xaverian. It is a phenomenal group of schools.

As Athletic Director, I can truly say that there is no other single athletic event held at CHS each year that is as impressive, competitive and ambitious as this annual tradition. I look forward to the 20th anniversary year next January! Go Bulldogs!
