Tourney Time!

Two big home tournament games scheduled of the Bulldogs this week for two of the hottest teams in the state.

The Boys Hockey team, who has lost only once since Jan. 1st, is seeded 5th in the D2 South MIAA Tournament and will host #12 Scituate on Tuesday at 8:30 at Metropolis Rink in Canton.

The Boys Basketball team, who is riding a nine game winning streak, will host its first home tournament game in more than a dozen years on Wednesday night at 6:30 at CHS. The team is seeded #8 in the D2 South MIAA Tournament and will host #9 Sandwich in first round action.

It seemed only fitting that as the most successful Bulldog basketball regular season in 18 years came to a close on Sunday, a little history would be made to add some frosting to the already tasty cake.  Sunday, in Fairhaven High School's gymnasium, in front of dozens of devoted family, friends and Bulldog fans, CHS senior Sam Larson drove to the basket early in the 2nd half and calmly laid in the 1000th and 1001st points of his Bulldog career.

Joining the 1000 point club is no small feat.  Only 5 Bulldogs have done so before Larson (four on the boys side and one on the girls- Adam Fletcher- '93, Bruce Dasilva- '95, Eileen Morneau- '96, Adam Jablonski- '00, and Brian Pendergast- '00. ) 

Larson has helped the Bulldogs to a 13-7 regular season record, ending the schedule with an improbable 9-game winning streak. 

Larson is a three-sport star at CHS where he has been a two-time Hock All-Star in basketball and soccer.  He will captain the 2014 baseball team and is headed to URI to join their pitching staff in the fall.

Streaks continue...Champions are crowned…Statements are made….Awareness is raised….

Girls Basketball raises breast cancer awareness-  The Masciarelli Gymnasium was a sea of pink on Friday night as the CHS honored the accomplishments of our graduating seniors while raising awareness and money for breast cancer through the Play4Kay initiative.  Despite losing to Foxboro, both the Bulldogs and the visiting Warriors donned pink and collected money for the important charity. It was a wonderful example of high school students taking the lead and following through on a great initiative. The team also said good-bye to its three seniors- Alana Carrington, Caitlyn Hathaway and Kellie Stigas. They will be missed!


Boys Hockey peaking at right time- A convincing 4-1 victory over North Quincy on Wednesday night was the only game of the snow-shortened week for the Boys Hockey team.  The victory was the team's 7th in-a-row and really showcased just how far this team has come this season.  The team has lost only one game since failing to earn a win in the first 4 games of the season. Watching this team this season has really been a study in team development.  Wednesday saw the team dominate a very good North Quincy team. Goals were scored by Matt Lazaro (2), Ben Lodge, and Brian Hagan.

The team will end the regular season with a run of three games in three days on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday- Wednesday at home at 2:30 vs. Lincoln-Sudbury.


Wrestlers shine at Sectionals-  The Wrestling team (like many CHS teams this year) were handed a very tough tournament road when the MIAA realigned this year.  The team was moved from the competitive South Section to the ultra-competitive Central Section for tournament play.  To say that the team responded well would be an understatement.  Saturday saw six Bulldogs advance to the semi-finals of their weight class, three make the finals, and one crowned Sectional Champion- on the way to a 4th place team finish.

Chris Sullivan was the champion while Quinn Merrigan and Rob DiCalogero joined Sullivan in the final round. Brendan Lewis, and Wavol Prentice earned 3rd place finishes while Derek Haas also advanced to the semi-final round. All six of these Bulldogs have earned a place at next weekend's D3 State Meet.


Dream Boys Hoop season continues- What better way to respond to a mid-season 6-game losing streak than running off 8 wins in-a-row while qualifying for the state tournament, earning 2nd place in the Davenport, posting the program's highest win total in 18 years, and thrilling Bulldog fans to some amazing games?  If you haven't noticed, that's exactly what our Boys Basketball team has been up to lately.

This week saw the Bulldogs down two Davenport opponents- home vs. Stoughton on Tuesday (68-51) and Foxboro on the road Friday (73-65).  The team's seniors have really led the way during this impressive run. Leading the offensive assault has been Sam Larson, who's 26 points against Foxboro game him a career total of 986 points heading into today's game at Fairhaven.


Girls Hockey makes statement vs. state's best- It has been the story of this year's Girls Hockey season---the team plays great, against great opponents, but just can't find the back of the net enough to come away with a positive result. Wednesday night saw the top ranked, undefeated Duxbury Dragons visit Canton and, from the stands, it appeared to be yet another even game, but Canton managed only two goals while the Dragons netted five (including an empty-netter). Jackie Martin provided both Bulldog goals and, as a result, the team was in the game until the end.

Weather Postponements

• Canton High School's building and grounds will be closed from 5:00pm Saturday thru Noon on Sunday due to the storm.  Any practices scheduled during that time have been canceled
• Girls Hockey game with Franklin scheduled for Saturday night has been moved to Tuesday, Feb. 18th at 10:30am. 
• Boys Hockey game with LS scheduled for Saturday night has been rescheduled to Wednesday, Feb. 19th at 2:30pm. 
• The Boys Basketball game at Fairhaven scheduled for 1:00pm Sunday has been pushed back to a 4:00pm start. 

Week in Review- 2/3-2/8/14

It's an exciting time to be a Bulldog winter athlete or fan. Between impressive winning streaks, exceptional post-season performances and teams that continue to fight hard, this winter season is turning out to be one for the record books.

Boys Basketball upsets 1st place Sharon-  The streaking Boys Basketball team made it 6 wins in-a-row on Friday….and they did it with a bang, nearly putting up 100 points on first place Sharon in a 97-71 win. The victory was especially sweet as it denied the Eagles a chance to celebrate an outright Davenport Championship on the Bulldog's court while it kept hope alive that the 'dogs could catch the Eagles in the title chase.  It was an overall great team effort which saw Sam Larson score 35 points.  But beyond Larson, it seemed like whenever you turned around another Bulldog was getting it done- whether it was Atu Botsio aggressively driving to the hoop to make an acrobatic shot and earn the foul…or Matt Kelley and Tristan Morris knocking down huge 3's (just about always coming when it appeared the Eagles may go on a run)….or Scott Olshaker tipping offensive rebounds to a teammate to keep a key possession going. It was a team effort.  The Dogpound played its part too, starting out with Silent Night and not stopping until the final buzzer. 

The win qualified the squad for the State Tournament and it came on the heels of a nice road win on Tuesday night over KP, 67-59.  The team has remaining games with Stoughton, Foxboro and Fairhaven as they look to keep the momentum going heading into the State Tournament. 

Boys Hockey makes it 5 in-a-row- The Boys Hockey team's 5-1 win over Mansfield on Saturday night at home made it 5 victories in-a-row, the latest in a string of good play that has seen the Bulldogs lose only one game in twelve since January 1st.  The win also wraps up the team's 4th straight Hockomock Davenport Championship.  The Bulldogs allowed the first goal but it was all CHS after that. Two goals each by Ben Lodge and Matt Lazaro as well as a lone tally by Brendan Logan kept the home crowd happy. The victory comes on the heels of another convincing Hock victory- 5-0 over King Philip on Wednesday. Lazaro was the star in that one with a hat trick while net minder Justin Slocum earned the shutout. 

Swimmers compete at Sectionals- Five Bulldog swimmers competed in Saturday's MIAA Sectional Meet at Wellesley College. The girls performed great.  The Freestyle relay team of Tiffany Ha, Emilee Mercuri, Kimberly Frazier and Julia Guerini were tremendous, swimming to a personal record of 1:53.01. Ha also placed 15th in the 100 Backstroke in her personal best time of 1:05.51.  All four girls will return to the pool next weekend for the State Meet.

Wrestlers win one, drop some close ones- The Wrestling team defeated Taunton 48-28 on Saturday, but ended up on the wrong end of 3 very close matches during the rest of the week (39-36 to Weymouth, 30-49 to Barnstable, and 37-40 to league rival Stoughton. Quinn Merrigan and Chris Sullivan were perfect on the week while Rob DiCalogero, Wavol Prentice, and Waleed Chakir each won three matches.  Several Bulldogs will compete in the Sectional meet next weekend. 

Girls Hockey comes up just short- It was a light week on the schedule for the Girls Hockey team with all of the focus being put on Saturday night's road game with Norwell. The team played well and Kelsey Trerice found the back of the net for the Bulldogs, but it would not hold up as Norwell topped the Bulldogs, 2-1.

Gymnast compete in Hocks- The young and improving gymnastics team competed in Saturday's Hock Gymanstics Championships held at Canton's Metro-South Gymnastics Academy.  The team ended the season continuing to show the growth that they showed all season long. Jillian Burke posted as season high o the beam of 7.0. Cassie Loftus registered an 8.45 vault. Rachel Liebovitz had a solid 8.0 performance on the floor.


Girls Basketball looking for big finish- It was a big task this week as the Girls Basketball team had to face two of the best teams in the Hock. Good performances were aplenty by the Bulldogs but it didn't add up to any wins. Gabby Kenefick led the team against Davenport Champion Sharon, netting 12 points with two three-pointers. Emma Murphy led the Bulldog attack against KP, netting 8 pints and 7 rebounds while blocking two Warrior shots.

Weather Related Changes

All practices, games and any other scheduled team activity has been canceled/postponed today- Wednesday, February 5th, due to the snow.

The following postponements have been finalized:

• Wrestling meet with Stoughton has been moved to Thursday at 7:00.

• Girls Hockey with Sandwich has been moved to Wednesday, February 19th at 6:30.

• Boys Hockey with KP at Foxboro has been moved to Thursday at 3:00pm.

Week in Review- 1/26-2/1/14

It was a big week in the CHS Athletic world highlighted by three Hock Championship meets on Saturday where many Bulldogs shine.

Three Wrestlers crowned Hock Champions as Sullivan makes League history- Junior Rob DiCalogero joined seniors Quinn Merrigan and Chris Sullivan in being crowned Hockomock League Champion in their weight classes at Saturday's Championship meet. DiCalogero went into Saturday's meet at OA with hopes of a championship at the 145 weight class. He would defeat some very accomplished wrestlers to earn his crown.  Merrigan was the favored to repeat as Hock Champion at 138 and he did not disappoint, earning a big pin in his final match. Sullivan made League history- yes, not just school history but League history- as his victory in the finals of the 152 weight class was his 4th consecutive League Title- a feat NEVER achieved by any Hockomock League wrestler in the history of the League. When you see Chris around school this week, be sure to congratulate him on this amazing achievement.

On a personal note- I remember Chris watching the Bulldog Wrestlers in our meets back when he was in grade school. I also remember him telling me that he hoped to someday do great things on the mat for us. Since then, I've seen this young man work incredibly hard to achieve his goals and CHS athletics has greatly benefited. We can all learn from Chris's determination.

Swimmers shine at Hock Championships- Some great performances were put in by the Bulldogs at Saturday's Bob Sondheim Hock Championship Swim meet at Milford on Saturday. The Girls team finished 7th overall while the Boys team finished 10th. Highlighting the Boys' side was the 5th place finish of the 200 Free Relay team of Sean Mitchell, Dan Nadeau, Diego Ferstier and Owen Guerini who put in a time of 1:44.81. The 200IM Relay of Ferstier, Mitchell, Kevin Wing and Sam Reimer also excelled, finishing 8th with a time of 1:59.66.

The highest finishing Bulldog event of the day was the girls 200 Free Relay. Kim Frazier, Julia Guerini, Tiffany Ha and Emilee Mercuri finished 2nd in this competitive event and then the same team went out and finished 7th in the 200IM Relay. Ha also finished 6th in the 200 IM and 4th in the 100 Backstroke- an incredible day for Ha.  Frazier also finished 6th in the 100 Breaststroke in a time of 1:22.72 and 10th in the 100 Free in 2:24.68. Also finishing with top 10 finishes were Mercuri, who finished 9th in the 100 Breaststroke- 1:24.45 and Guerini in the 200 Free- 2:24. 68.


Tracksters excel in League Championship meet- The Wrestlers and Swimmers weren't the only ones achieving greatness on Saturday as several members of the Bulldog Indoor Track team put up some impressive numbers at the Hock Track Championships. Amanda Eagles finished the in the 2 mile. Rachel Campagna was 6th in the 55m dash.  Liam Collins qualified for the states with an personal best time of 4:42 in the mile.


Boys Basketball extends winning streak- The Boys Basketball team went 3-0 this week beating Fairhaven on Sunday, Oliver Ames on Tuesday, and North Attleboro on Friday. The Dogs are currently riding a 4 game win streak, having not dropped a game since losing to #1 state ranked Mansfield, which puts them back in second place in the Davenport division.  Scott Olshaker was exceptional on defense this week while Ato Botsio has been a major influence on both end of the court. With 5 games left, the team needs two more wins to qualify for the state tournament for the 4th consecutive year.


Boys Hockey racking up the wins- Two home wins over Stoughton and Taunton this week extended the Boys Hockey winning streak to 4 games and moved the team within one win of State Tournament qualification. Multiple goal scorers for the 'dogs in these two wins were- Bobby Mulaney and Brian Hagan- each with two. All three of the Bulldog goaltenders saw action and combined for the two shutout wins- Tommy Chen, Sean Klimas and Justin Slocum were all exceptional. 


Lynch doubles up for Girls Hockey- Freshman Emily Lynch played both defense and goalie for the Girls Hockey team in Wednesday's game with Falmouth.  Lynch, normally a defensemen, had to put the pads on in between periods when the Bulldog starting goaltender fell ill and couldn't finish the game. Coach Dennis Aldrich stated, "I know of no other player that has ever done that in high school hockey."


Gymnasts put up best score of season- Saturday night saw the Gymnastics team travel to Mansfield to face the powerful Hornets. Although the team was unable to come home with their first victory of the season, they did post their highest score of the year- 123.1. There were lots of personal best scores including: Danielle Arthur- 8.1 on vault, Cassie Loftus- 9.0 on floor, 7.5 on bars and 8.3 on vault, Kehla Minkin- 7.3 on bars, and Maddie Kamin- 7.0 on beam. Things are looking up for the squad heading into February. 


Girls Hoop continues to improve- Despite losing both games this week, the Girls Basketball team played very well and showed a great deal of improvement from earlier in the season. They fought hard against Oliver Ames including a half-court shot at the buzzer of the first half by Gabby Kenefick, to put a pretty good scare into the visiting Tigers. The team will look for its first win of the season on Tuesday at home vs. KP.
