Wrestlers, Tracksters and Swimmers excelling at the League and State level

It's been a banner season for our Wrestling, Track and Swim teams this winter.  In recent weeks, those programs have made the transition from team-centered competition to individual tournaments and meets. Many CHS student athletes have seen tremendous successes.  Here are some of the most impressive achievements-

Wrestling-
Kupferman and Ritson

Seven Bulldogs placed in the Sectional Tournament earlier in the month- Ruairi Ritson (Champion), Max Kupferman (2nd place), Seamus Brown (6th), Matt Morin (6th), Jacob George (6th), Matt Sica (6th), and Anika Valluri (6th).

After doing well at the Sectionals, Ruairi Ritson, Max Kupferman and Anika Valluri went on to the D2 States where Ritson earned 2nd place and Kupferman 4th.  Both will be heading to the All-States tournament this weekend where they will face off against the best in the state at all divisions.

Kupferman and Ritson are both representing the Bulldogs in the New England Championships being held in Providence this weekend.

She will move on to the Meet of Champions (top 24 athletes in each event across all 5 divisions) where she is ranked 14th in the entire state of MA!

Shoulder Check- Feb. 14th Boys Hockey game

On February 14th the Canton High School Varsity boys hockey team will face off against Bishop Feehan at 4:00p.m at Metropolis Rink (Ponky). At this game we will be announcing a mental health initiative which carries a focus of suicide prevention.

“The HT40 Foundation exists to do nothing more than what one young man did himself- bring people together with kindness and compassion, leaving no one left apart”. HT40’s name is based off of a young man from Connecticut named Hayden Thorsen who tragically lost his life to suicide in May of 2022. Hayden, a student-athlete who proudly wore #40, was a friend and a peer to all who knew him, never hesitating to put an arm around someone’s shoulder. HT40 was created by Hayden's parents Sarah and Rob and sister Elke.

Shoulder Check is an #HT40 initiative inspiring young people to commit to supporting one another through small acts that have a big impact. To show that ‘being there’ is as simple as a hand on a shoulder. We, at Canton High School, are asking those in attendance at the February 14th hockey game to show and promote support for others through a simple act of placing a hand on the shoulder of the person next to them.

Always remember to Reach Out, Check In, and Make Contact. You can visit and learn more about Shoulder Check at https://www.shouldercheck.org/ and follow @theshouldercheck on Instagram.

Shout out to Bridget Beatty for spearheading this initiative.

McGowan named new Head Girls Lacrosse Coach

The Canton High School Athletic Department is thrilled to announce the appointment of Kelly McGowan as our new Head Varsity Girls Lacrosse Coach.  McGowan is taking the reins from Casey Bradley who had served in the role for two successful seasons before moving on to take the head coaching position at Framingham State University.

McGowan is no stranger to Canton High School athletics.  A CHS graduate, she has been a part of the CHS Field Hockey program's coaching staff- working with her sister Chrissy O'Connor- since 2016.  She also served as assistant coach of the Girls Lacrosse team in 2016 and 2017.  She is a proud member of the Canton Hall of Fame- a very impressive accomplishment.

McGowan's coaching experience is beyond extensive and impressive. She served as Head Women's Lacrosse Coach at Bentley University from 1997-2001, earning Northeast Ten Conference Coach of the Year honors for the 2000 season.  Beyond Lacrosse, she served as Bentley's Women's Field Hockey coach from 1995-2008 winning the NCAA Division II National Championship in 2001. (You read that right- she coached her team to a National Championship.)

We are very excited to have Kelly at the helm of our Girls Lacrosse program.  This program has really developed in recent years and we are excited to see where Coach McGowan can lead it from here.

She had this to say about her appointment-

"I am thrilled and honored to coach girls lacrosse at Canton High. CHS has a tradition of excellence in girls sports. I'm so proud that I was a part of that tradition as a player and now as a coach. I'm excited to give back to a school that has meant so much to me."
