Late January Winter Sports Action Update

It's been another exciting winter season thus far in Bulldog-land.  As we head into February next week, here is a look at how our teams are doing:

Girls Swimming-
Overall Record- 5-1
Davenport Record- 5-0- Davenport Champions!

It was yet another Championship season for the Girls Swim team after going unbeaten in the Davenport! Leading the squad while also qualifying for the Sectionals and States is Shauna Harney, Keeley Harney and Annie McLean as well as the 200 Medley Relay, 200 Free Relay and 400 Free Relay.

Boys Swimming-
Overall Record- 5-1
Davenport Record 4-1

The Boys Swim team had another great season, coming up just short in their bid for a Dav Title. Talis Vedis has qualified for Sectionals and States.

Girls Hockey-

Overall Record- 9-2-2
League Record- 3-1

Stellar play from our senior captains- Maya Battista, Audrey Coen, Ellie Bohane and Carolyn Durrand- and incoming freshman Izzy Cusack, has propelled the team to a strong start. Continually improving and getting better each week, the team looks to finish out the regular season with a tough February schedule and gain momentum heading into the playoffs.

Boys Basketball-
Overall Record: 7-6
League Record: 5-5

Boys Basketball has had an exciting season thus far. The Bulldogs have established an identity on the defensive end of the floor and have committed to disrupting their opponents rhythm. At 7-6, the Boys Basketball Team is a tough out in the Hockomock League. Led by seniors Matt Chafin, Julius Hicks, and Caden Mirliani, the team is equipped to have different players step up each game. Juniors Zaza Francoeur and Jamaal McConnell are an athletic duo who have each led the team in scoring on different nights. With 8 regular season games to go, the Boys Basketball Team is working towards a berth in the state tournament.

Winter Cheer-
Cheer is having a great season thus far! We have officially launched our JV team and we now have 35 athletes program-wide this season. The competition team has been preparing for our competition which takes place on February 26th at Foxboro High School. Every day they have made huge progress and we are looking forward to a very competitive end to our season.

We are running a youth cheer clinic this season and look forward to their performances in the next few weeks at the Friday basketball games. In the meantime, our teams are enjoying cheering on the sidelines at very exciting boys and girls basketball Friday home games.  We organized a teacher appreciation night on Friday January 27th with the boys basketball teams to honor our favorite teachers in our lives! It was an awesome night.

Girls Basketball-

Overall record: 2-9
League record: 2-8

After a slow start to the year, the Girls Basketball team is starting to form a great identity on defense, holding league-leaders Franklin and Foxboro to a few of their lowest offensive outputs of the season.  The squad has had 5 losses by single digits and are trending in a positive direction to flip this season around.  The girls attention to detail increases by the day as the team is still all focused on grabbing a post-season berth despite the current record.

Boys Hockey-
Overall Record to Date- 11-2-0
League Record to Date- 5-1-0

The Boys Varsity Hockey team got off to a hot start this season, winning their first six games of the season, including big victories over perennial powers Lincoln-Sudbury and Hanover. The team has gone 5-2 in their last six games, with their only losses coming to rival Franklin and Archbishop Williams. Offensively, the team has featured a balanced scoring attack led by junior Brendan Tourgee and seniors AJ Thomas and Jack Digirolamo. Defensively, goalie Colin Davis has been solid in goal, while senior defensemen James Young, Griffin Hughes, and junior Matt Anderson have played outstanding all year long.

Girls Indoor Track-

Overall record 2-3

The Girls Indoor Track team has improved leaps and bounds since day one of practice.  There is a great mix of newcomers and veterans that have stepped up and produced valuable points each meet.  It has been a total team effort in all event areas (sprinting, distance, throwing, jumping) Top point scorers this season have been Katie Oliver, Syriah McCruse, Jayda Proffit, Emma Massih, Nora Giannacopolous, Lexi Piazza, Maggie McCready, Klara Redquest, Tahlia Weaver, and Lianna Camille

Recently at Division 3 relays, the team finished in the top 10 overall.  Highlighted by...
Long jump relay 3rd overall
Katie Oliver, Abby Chin, Jayda Proffit
Shot Put relay 5th overall
Emma Massih, Jess Brathwaite, Allie Wong
4x200 6th overall
Diana Tambi, Katie Oliver, Jayda Proffit, Syriah McCruse

Boys Indoor Track-
Overall record 0-5

While the boys finished the regular season without a win they battled hard and had two very close meets with 2nd place finisher OA and Foxboro.  Indoor rookie and Junior Luke Darling has impressed so far this season with the teams top time in the 600, mile, 2 mile, and top 400 and 800 split in relays respectively.

Top point scorers this season have been Mo Arugollu, Luke Darling, Josh Richards, Christian Hanlon, Dan Kraslynkov, Austin DiBiasio, Sam Vail, and Dom Gray.

Gymnastics-
Overall Record- 0-5
League Record- 0-1
The Bulldogs have put together a strong season so far.  Senior Captain Jenna Morgan has placed in the top three in each of her meets on beam or floor and the team has pulled together supporting each other at each competition.

Jenna Morgan and Emily MacKay placed first and second respectively on beam in our first meet against North Attleboro.  Jacob LaBolitta has placed first or second on vault in the meets he has been able to compete in.

Wrestling-
Canton High Wrestling has had a strong season so far, with a record of 4-13 at present. Zach Xavethy, Max Kupferman, Liam Shea, Ruiairi Ritson and Julian Prentice have all emerged as serious contenders to place at the upcoming Sectional tournament on February 11th. Despite our roster consisting of mostly underclassmen, we have wrestled tough against strong competition from the Hockomock League, which is one of the best wrestling leagues in the state, as well as numerous matches against the best programs in the entire state. As we say in the practice room, iron sharpens iron and hopefully this exposure to high level wrestling over the course of our season will lead to some strong post-season results! Most recently, Canton picked up a win over Stoughton by a score of 42-32.
