Week in Review- 9/22/14-9/27/14

It was a light week on the calendar this week but plenty of significant action for the Bulldogs.

Coaches attend PCA Workshop- More than 50 CHS coaches took time out of their busy schedules to attend a Positive Coaching Alliance workshop held at the CHS Library on Thursday night. The workshop focussed on double-goal coaching- competing to win and competing to learn life-long lessons. Thanks to the CHS Booster Club for supporting this great partnership.

Volleyball continues dominance- The Volleyball team remained unbeaten with a win over Stoughton on Tuesday, 3-0 (25-17, 25-11, 25-17). Chidera Nwankwo led the Bulldogs with 6 kills, hitting .750. Kim Frazier had six kills and hit at .444 clip. Erin Proctor had 17 assists, 2 kills and 3 aces.

XC teams win first meets-

Boys- The Boys XC squad earned the 22-34 win over Milford Tuesday behind strong performances by Spencer Polsgrove (1st-17:20) and Courtland Priest (2nd-17:21). Other strong runners on the day were Danny Brooks, Caleb Morrison, Andrew Moy, Brian Rota and Andrew Salvatori.

Girls- The Girls XC team also earned a huge win, 21-40 over Milford Tuesday. Cat Song (1st), Julia Guerini (3rd) and Olivia Stevens (4th) lead the Canton charge. Also performing well for the Bulldogs- Sam Koplik, Maggie Dunn, Erin Martin and Sophia Argus.  Song's 1st place finish is her 2nd of the season.

Golf Team keeps great playing going- The once-beaten Golf team took care of their one match of the week on Tuesday, downing Milford at Blue Hills Country Club, 157-187. Top scorers were Mike Breviglia (38), Brian Halloran (38), Shane Ezepik (40), and Steve Gorham/Jack Goyetch (41). The victory qualifies the team for the State Tournament.

Boys Soccer draws with Stoughton to hold on to top spot- Damian Kozak's 2nd half goal off a Georgio Papakonstantino free kick could only earn the Boys Soccer team a 1-1 draw with the Black Knights on Tuesday. Kozak has scored in all but one of the Bulldogs' games this season.

Field Hockey earns big win over Stoughton-  In what was a total team effort, the Field Hockey team earned a 6-0 win over visiting Stougthton on Monday afternoon. Caroline Hagan, Mary McNeil, Julianne Howlett, Lindsey Nolte, Jackie Martin and Abby Powers each scored in the Davenport win, improving the team's record to 3-2-2.

Girls Soccer breaks through- After playing well game after game with nothing to show for it, the Girls Soccer team downed Stoughton on Tuesday, 2-0 for a much-needed Hock Davenport victory.  Goals came from Casey Bradley on a pass from Sarah Connolly and Caitlin Hutchinson on a pass from Sarah MacQuarie.

Week in Review- 9/15-9/20

Captains attend PCA workshop-  Thursday night saw the CHS varsity captains attend and participate in a leadership, excellence and sportsmanship clinic put on by PCA- Positive Coaching Alliance. The 55 captains were trained in areas that we hope will lead to continued excellence in all areas of CHS athletics. Thanks to the CHS Athletic Booster Club for sponsoring our new partnership with PCA. For information on PCA, click here.

Football team on Fire- For only the 2nd time since the turn of the century, the Football team is off to a 3-0 start with this past Friday's 26-7 convincing home-opener win over Hock Davenport rival Sharon. The entire school was out to supper the Bulldogs on a beautiful fall friday night and the home team did not disappoint.

Quarterback Brian Hagan put up amazing numbers for the 3rd week in-a-row tossing two HUGE touchdown passes- one to Michael Harris and one to Derrick Harris- while running for two of his own. The Bulldog defense limited the Eagle offense to very little yardage throughout the game.

Volleyball continues dominance in the Hock- Two Hock wins this week over OA and Milford, improved the Girls Volleyball team to 7-0.  Leading the 'dogs this week were Erin Proctor (39 assists, 10 kills and 8 aces), Liz Hamilton (16 kills and 8 aces) and Kim Frazier (11 kills). The Bulldogs are currently ranked in the Boston Globe top 20.

Golf Team drops heartbreaker to OA for only blemish of the season-  Despite dropping its first match of the season to OA, there was plenty for the CHS Golf team to crow about this week. Brian Halloran shot a one-under-par 35 at Easton CC in a big win over Stoughton early in the week. Griffin Jerrier shot 41 and Mike Breviglia 42 on a tough Sharon CC course to earn a mid-week victory. The team hasn't won at Sharon since 2007. The team's record is now 6-1.

Boys Soccer climbs to first place in Davenport- Despite going 1-1-1 this week, the Boys Soccer team climbed into a 1-point lead over both Stoughton and Foxboro in a very tight Hock Davenport title race. Damian Kozak recorded 3 goals on the week which included two big ones in a 3-0 shutout over high-powered Milford. Aidan Carr earned the shutout for the squad in goal. Freshman Jake Verille registered his first career goal as well. For a complete game recap by hockomocksports, click here.

Girls Soccer continues to play good soccer but results are not showing it- The Girls Soccer team had a tough week on the schedule, facing first place Foxboro, traditional power OA and upstart Milford.  The casual observer watching these games would guess that the Bulldogs outplayed their opponents but in all three cases, the team came up short, falling in a three contests.

Field Hockey team sitting at .500- A young CHS Field Hockey team continues to find its way early in the season as it suffered a tough 2-1 loss at the hands of Norwood on Saturday, following up an earlier week tie with OA, 1-1.  The Bulldog's lone goal of the loss to Norwood was scored by Kelsey Trerice.

Cross Country Teams fall to league power- Both the Boys and Girls XC teams fell to Oliver Ames this week- one of the strongest teams in the state. On the Girls side, Cat Song contented to distinguish herself as a top runner in the Davenport as she finished first overall, 40 seconds ahead of the next runner. The Boys side saw Courtland Priest and Spencer Posgrove lead the way with a 18:06 and 18:07 respectively.  The team will look to rebound with a meet against Milford this week.

Student Athlete/Parent Presentation- September 11th

The CHS Athletic Department is excited to announce formally, an important presentation taking place on Thursday, September 11th at 6:30pm in the CHS Auditorium. Attendance at this presentation is mandatory for any CHS student who is interested in participating in a sport at CHS this school year. It is requested that at least one parent attend as well.

This year's presentation will be highlighted by a visit by Kathi and Chris Sullivan. The Sullivans have both suffered tragedy and loss associated with substance abuse. Kathi lost her 17 year old daughter Taylor in a tragic drinking incident during her senior year at King Phillip Regional High School. Chris's NFL career came to an end as a result of substance abuse. Their combined message is incredibly powerful. We think it is important for both our student athletes and their parents to hear. (see link below)

We will also briefly review some new initiatives and new policies which impact student athletes at CHS this school year.

Please arrive early to be sure that we can get everyone checked in and seated so we can get our program started on time.

Any student athlete who is unable to attend, must notify the athletic office prior to the 11th.

A special thanks goes out to the CHS Athletic Booster Club and to the Canton Cooperative Bank for sponsoring our speakers that night. Without their work and generosity, programs like this would not be possible.

We are very excited to share this program with the Bulldog Community. See you on Thursday!

Back to school....and a new attendance rule

Welcome back to all CHS students! It's a great day to be a teacher or student! Lot's of energy in the building (and a lot of heat).

As we start school today, it is important to make all students and parents aware of a new policy which went into effect today.

As you know, a student must be in school in order to participate that afternoon in athletics. In the past, the threshold for when a student must be in by was 10:30 am. That has been pushed up to 8:16am. So- from this point forth, any student who arrives at CHS for the school day AFTER 8:16 am, will NOT be allowed to participate in athletic practices or games that day.

There are still exceptions to this rule. If a student has a doctor's appointment or other type of appointment that cannot be avoided, and makes every effort to get to as much of the school day as possible, she will be eligible if she provides a doctor's note (or other) when she arrives at school.

Any absence longer than a couple of hours needs to be cleared IN ADVANCE in the athletic office to ensure eligibility on that day.

This rule sets a higher standard for CHS students.

Please see exact language below:

No athlete may participate in any way with his/her team (this includes attending practice/game) on any day in which he/she is absent from school.  A student who is not in attendance for AT LEAST the final five periods of the day, is not eligible to participate on that day.  Students who leave school during the day and who do not return are also not eligible that day. Game forfeitures and/ or suspensions may result from violation of this attendance policy.

NOTE: Student-athletes are reminded that Canton High School is an academic institution and that a full day of classes is expected of all students. If it is believed that student-athletes are abusing the “Final Five Period Rule,” coaches and administrators may deem them ineligible.

EXCEPTION: Permission to participate on these days may be granted by the AD/Principal in some excused cases (funeral, verified college visit, court obligations, etc) when requested and granted in advance
