Winter Season wraps up
This weekend saw the winter season come to a close with some pretty big events. We had two wrestlers at the New Englands, the Cheerleaders at the States and our Hockey team in the South Sectional Finals. It will be a weekend Bulldog fans will not soon forget.
Cheerleaders place 3rd at States- After an incredible season, the Cheerleaders performed incredibly well at the highest level of competition, placing 3rd at the States held at Tantasqua Regional High School on Sunday. Their score was high enough to qualify them for an invitation to the Nationals in Orlando, Florida at the end of the month. Congratulations to the coaches and team on reaching such a high level!
Wrestling Dynamic Duo excels at New Englands- It doesn't get any bigger in high school wrestling for our Bulldogs than to compete at the New England meet. Most schools in the state don't send any wrestlers to this elite meet, but CHS sent both Quinn Merrigan and Chris Sullivan. Sullivan, the most decorated Wrestler in CHS history, wrestled well and finished in 7th place in the 145 weight class. But the highlight for the Bulldogs this time around was focused squarely on Merrigan, who became the first Bulldog to ever advance to the finals of this tournament of the best wrestlers in New England. Merrigan was barely defeated by his opponent (who was undefeated on the season) in the 138 weight class. Merrigan and Sullivan graduate CHS as the two winningest wrestlers in the history of our program.
Boys Hockey falls just short of trip to Garden- It felt like the entire town of Canton came to Bourne's Gallo Arena on Sunday afternoon to support the Boys Hockey team and they were treated to an incredible game. The #5 seeded Bulldogs were facing the #2 seeded Warriors of Medfield in a rematch from earlier this season when Canton downed the Warriors 4-2.
The Green and White dug an early hole for themselves and trailed 1-0 after the first. Another Warrior goal in the 2nd doubled the deficit heading into the final period. The Bulldogs would not quit as they came out and narrowed the lead back to one on a beautiful wrist shot from the point by Anthony Francescan. Unfortunately, just minutes later the Warriors added an insurance goal to make it 3-1 and appeared to ice the game.
But the Bulldogs had other plans. After pulling the goalie with about 2 minutes to play, the 'dogs kept the puck in the Warriors zone and finally found the back of the net with just 21 seconds to play when John Femia roofed a shot past the Warrior net minder. The final 21 seconds were as intense as it gets as the Bulldogs forced an icing call and a subsequent face-off in front of Medfield's goal. After winning the face-off the Bulldogs put the puck in the crease and flooded the net with green jerseys. The puck did everything but go in the net and with 2 seconds left, the puck emerged from the scrum and harmlessly trickled to the boards as the clock winded down on an unbelievable Bulldog season.
Congrats to Coach Shuman and the boys on an incredible run.

The MIAA has posted the following alert to local student athletes and their families:
March 5, 2014 - In an effort to ensure the safety of our students, we wanted to pass along some critical information regarding a person trying to contact local athletes on Facebook. The person goes by “Manny Whelan” on Facebook, and he is offering local student-athletes money to “compete” in an “underground wrestling club” that is held in local hotels. It has come to our attention that this person has been contacting local male student-athletes for at least two years. This may not be exclusive to wrestling, so please inform ALL of your coaches, parents, and students.
If you have any information regarding this, please contact your local resource officer. If one is not available, contact the Massachusetts Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force at 978-451-3550.

Bulldog Nation loses biggest fan
The Canton High School Athletic Department would like to extend our condolences, and those of all of Bulldog Nation, to the family of Mr. Bill Cravens Sr. Mr. Cravens passed away on Monday night.
Mr. Cravens has long been the #1 supporter of Canton Athletics. If you have attended a CHS athletic event over the past several decades you can rest assured that Mr. Cravens was in then stands with you. He was a loyal supporter at home games but would also travel the commonwealth to support the Green & White....particularly at tourney time.
It has long been an understanding among CHS coaches, players and fans that the game wasn't over until Mr. Cravens packed up his chair and left. So, no matter how far ahead or behind our Bulldogs were in a game, the final result was in doubt until Mr. Cravens headed towards the exit. When I watch the rare game when Mr. Cravens isn't present, I often try to guess when Mr. Cravens would be leaving if he were here. I'm sure all CHS coaches will be doing this long into the future.
As hundreds of CHS fans head down to Bourne for our hockey game Thursday night, be sure to take a moment as the puck drops, to think about Mr. Cravens....how much he cared about Bulldog athletics and athletes and how lucky we all are to live in a community with such people surrounding us.

Post-Season rolls on..huge crowds, huge hearts & some wrestling history
This past week saw the Bulldog community come out and support our winter athletes in large numbers and with large hearts! Throngs of Bulldog fans supported the Boys Basketball and Boys Hockey teams in early round tourney action. Along the way, the community has also rallied around our assistant hockey coach- coach Rocha's family's cancer battle in a team inspired "Fight Like a Bulldog" campaign. Meanwhile, members of our Wrestling team advanced further than any Bulldog has ever advanced while our Cheerleading squad kept up their "banner year." It was a big week!
Sullivan and Merrigan go where no Bulldog has gone before- The two most accomplished wrestlers in the history of the CHS Wrestling program continued to outdo the past as both Quinn Merrigan and Chris Sullivan advanced to the finals of their respective weight classes at the All-State Wrestling Championships this weekend. No Bulldog Wrestler has ever advanced to the finals of the All-States before the dynamic duo did this weekend. Both of the senior Bulldogs had great victories leading up to their finals match-ups, both with the defending champion. Each wrestled well in the final but came up just short.
Boys Hoop ends tremendous run- The Boys Basketball season came to an end on Wednesday night at the hands of top seeded Bishop Feehan (21-1). The loss marked the first blemish on the team's record since a loss to the state's top ranked team, Mansfield on January 21st. Sandwiched in between those two losses to powerhouse programs, the Bulldogs won 10 straight, thrilled local fans, and made it clear that basketball is back here in Canton. Congratulations to the coaches and staff on a great season.
Boys Hockey advances to Sectional Semi-Final- The Boys Hockey team followed up a first round win over Scituate with a 2-0 win over Medway in the sectional quarterfinal round at Brockton on Saturday. Brian Hagan and Kevin O'Brien scored for the Bulldogs while sophomore goaltender Justin Slocum was clean in the shutout. The Dog Pound came out in force in supporting the Bulldogs who will travel to Bourne on Thursday to face top-seeded Plymouth South on Thursday night at 7:30pm.
Cheerleaders crowned Regional Champs....again!- Sunday saw the Cheerleading squad follow up its fall Regional Championship with yet another for the winter season. The team was incredible and will look to take home the states on Sunday at Tantasqua Regional. Good luck!
