Final Four Field Hockey team- no accident
Caitlin Tureski photo |
As I drove home from last night's game, I couldn't help but think about how impressive the 2024 Bulldog Field Hockey team really was. It was no accident or stroke of luck that led this team to a Final Four appearance. It was commitment, hard work and dedication.
The 2024 Bulldog Field Hockey team had lofty goals after coming up just short of deep tourney runs the past couple of seasons. This year- they would not be denied.
The key lesson we can learn from this team was that their work ethic matched their goals. Let me say that again- Their WORK ETHIC matched their GOALS. All too often, teams talk about their goals and aspirations for success but nowhere near as often does the necessary work needed to achieve those goals actually take place. This group was different. They put in the work.
Caitlin Tureski photo |
As the Athletic Director and as a varsity coach here I have a front row seat for the "preparation game" that take place all year long here at CHS. I see the student athletes who go "down to the turf" to put in work when nobody is watching. The kids who are there all summer. The kids who are there in the freezing cold in January, pushing snow to the side to get stick-work and shooting work in. This Field Hockey team was filled with kids who did just that- who trained when nobody was watching.
Doing what is necessary to be a champion is HARD. Winning a Davenport Championship and advancing to a Final Four is really HARD. It takes work- that challenge is even more complicated in a team sport like Field Hockey. It can't be just a player or two who needs to work- it needs to be a critical mass of the team. I regularly drive through the parking lot of the turf and almost all year long, there have been multiple Field Hockey kids out there working- kids from all grades- being GREAT TEAMMATES by committing to put the work in to achieve their goals. It is AWESOME.
Many Bulldog Field Hockey players logged long hours training, sweating and working on the turf this past year, but I will highlight two who really exemplify the lessons of hard work leading to success- Shannon Lane and Carolyn Schiavo. These two Hockomock League all-stars are our Bulldog scoring leaders, and play at a level that is beyond impressive, beyond their years (sophomore and junior) and beyond the belief of most who watch them play. They just look "different" out there. That's because they both understood after last season, that they would be called upon to be GREAT in order for their team to achieve their goals. So both of them went out and put in an enormous amount of work. They were at the turf EVERY DAY....literally. They are ALWAYS there. They set the bar incredibly high for their teammates.
Carolyn and Shannon's extra work didn't stop when the season started in August. As a fall coach whose team practices before or after Field Hockey all season long, I witnessed those two getting to practice early or staying late to get in some extra reps ALL THE TIME. Extra shooting, extra stick work, extra fitness. And the coolest thing....is that it worked. Their work ethic was catchy and inspired the entire team. Championship level teams need two key things- a group that is bought-in and leaders who work harder (or at least as hard) as everyone else. This team had those two things.
Congratulations to our Field Hockey players and coaches on an amazing season. And thank you to all of them for providing the rest of us with a great road map to success- Your work must match your goals.
Go Bulldogs!

Coach Cawley joins 300 win club!
Shout out to Trainer Kristen Aguiar on writing up this blog entry!
On Oct 19, 2024 Coach Pat Cawley netted her 300th Win as a Bulldog with the ladies taking down Westwood 3-1 in a highly competitive non-league matchup. Coach Cawley surrounded by her team after win #300!
Twenty-four years ago Coach Cawley and Coach Kuncaitis advocated and brought volleyball to the Canton community. They worked together to build this program from the ground up. Coach Cawley coached the junior varsity and assisted varsity before taking over the program in 2007. She has coached 18 Hockomock League Championship teams, has coached in 2 state finals games, winning the state championship in 2019. Her overall record now stands at 302-80 (and counting) Cawley is a multi-time winner of both the Boston Globe Coach of the year as well as Hockomock Coach of the Year. She has been inducted into the MAVCA Hall of Fame and the New Agenda Northeast Hall of Fame.
Coach Amico the JV Coach had this to say about Coach Cawley: “Coach Cawley's coaching resume certainly speaks for itself, but what sets her apart as the best, is the person that she is. For those who know Coach Cawley no explanation is necessary, and honestly for those who don’t, no explanation can truly capture the remarkable person she is. Strong and determined. An encourager and supporter. Passionate and competitive. Team oriented and selfless. She instills a sense of confidence and worth in each young woman, on and off the court. Every athlete leaves this program knowing they are worthy, that they have a voice, and can make a difference in this world. Most of all they know they have a coach who cares and has their back.”
The Bulldogs are very lucky to have Coach Cawley on our staff as a coach and mentor. Congratulations Coach! Here’s to many more wins!!

Unified Basketball Season set to tip off soon!
The CHS Athletic Department is happy to announce that our Unified Sports program is beginning its 2024-25 season on Monday, October 7th! There is still plenty of room to join the squad. Register today!
CHS has been at the forefront of the Unified Sports scene since we launched our Unified Track and Field program in 2016. In Massachusetts, Unified Sports were born out of a collaboration between US Special Olympics and the MIAA. Special Olympics Project Unify is an education-based project, funded by the US Dept. of Education, that uses the sports and education programs of Special Olympics to activate young people across the US. In order to promote school communities where all young people are agents of change- fostering respect, dignity and advocacy for people with disabilities. Canton High School and Special Olympics believe that through sports young people can make a difference in friendships, schools and communities.
The program is open to ALL CHS students. The commitment is limited to two afternoon's each week- starting next week and ending in mid-November.
We are looking for student athletes and partners! If you enjoy basketball and are looking for a fun, inclusive, and meaningful experience please join!!!

Massaro then went on to play hockey professionally in Europe in the EWHL. She was a member of the USA Women's National Ball Hockey team who won gold at the 2024 World Championships this past June.

Mark Erickson named Bulldog Strength and Conditioning Coach
The CHS Athletic Department is thrilled to announce the hiring of Mark Erickson (no relation!) as our new Strength and Conditioning Coach. Beginning immediately, Erickson will take the lead in all things fitness, strength and conditioning for the entire Bulldog Athletic program.
Coach Mark Erickson has been a strength and conditioning trainer for the last two decades and has trained a diverse group of young athletes from all different sports and skill levels, from middle school and high school, to D1, D2, and D3 college athletes.
Mark has had great success as a strength coach since moving to Canton in 2022, with trainees from youth football, girls basketball, softball, and volleyball, as well as current Canton High School athletes from football, baseball, hockey, and golf, participating in strength and conditioning training at his studio. A former student athlete from Brockton, MA, an award-winning natural bodybuilder, and award-winning jazz trumpet player (how about that?!), Coach Erickson knows the dedication and hard work it takes to consistently meet and exceed the goals he sets for himself. He takes pride in passing that experience and wisdom down to all of his athletes.
Coach Erickson is a true believer in positive motivation and delivering efficient and progressive strength and conditioning programs with a high success rate for all sports. He also believes in how hard work in the gym can not only improve one’s physical abilities, but also one’s cognitive abilities, confidence in themselves, and leadership skills.
Coach Mark Erickson had this to say upon his appointment-
"I am really excited and eager to take over the role of Strength and Conditioning Coach at Canton High School to continue the amazing work and highest standards that Coach Hughes has successfully implemented with all of our CHS athletes so far. As a Canton resident, Dad of 13 and 10 year old boys, and a youth football and baseball coach, I am doubly invested in the success of all of our Canton athletes. It gives me great pride to have this opportunity and I am looking forward to working hard to get the absolute best out of our athletes day in and day out!"
CHS Athletics welcomes Coach Mark Erickson to our Bulldog family!

Big Night for CHS Student-Athletes and Parents
Member of Team USA- Noelle Lambert |
All in attendance will be treated to a keynote speaker who will kick-off the CHS Athletic year for all of us with an inspirational story of resilience and grit. Noelle Lambert is currently in Paris competing on Team USA in the Para-Olympic games. A former high school student athlete from New Hampshire, Lambert went on to play collegiate lacrosse before being involved in a tragic moped accident. Her comeback story and the heights she has reached since losing her leg in that accident, will inspire all of our Bulldogs to battle through their own challenges. She even went on to compete in a season of CBS's Survivor.
The night will run from 7:00pm-8:15pm and will feature Lambert for most of that time. Everyone has plenty of notice for this upcoming event and it is expected that all Bulldog student athletes clear their calendars that night to be able to attend.
Noelle is expected to participate in Paris on September 5th and 7th in Stade de France.

Some important Need-to-Knows for CHS Student Athletes and families
Some reminders about our health and safety
1. Wear Bug Spray! As has been the case in many previous years, areas of New England are currently dealing with mosquito-borne illnesses.
The Canton Public Schools recently began a weekly spraying of our playing fields by the Norfolk County Mosquito Control Project. This should help a great deal in decreasing the mosquito population in these areas.
Whether you are a participant or spectator at our outdoor practices and contests, be sure you are wearing a mosquito repellant with deet. Also- try to cover up as much as you can. Long sleeves and long pants are a plus.
2. Hydration! Our student athletes are expected to bring their own water bottles to all practices and contests. We do provide water for refills but we do not provide individual water bottles. Make sure you are drinking water throughout the school day as well!
3. If you are sick, stay home! The days of "battling through sickness" and getting to practices and games are over. If you feel sick, stay home! Don't get your teammates sick as well! Healthy teammates are key to team success!
4. SLEEP! Our summer sleeping patterns are now shifting to school year patterns. Our student athletes need a minimum of 8 hours sleep each night.
You are not being a good teammate if you are not working towards this goal. Optimum performance on the field, court, and course only comes with a solid night's sleep!
5. Eat smart! This blog entry won't get into what is healthy to eat or not....but we all know what is generally junk and what is good for us. Fuel your body with good stuff.
Be sure to think about WHEN you eat. Many of our contests are at times that mess up our typical eating times. PLAN out when you eat on game days. You need your fuel....but you don't need a big bag of Doritos right before you play!
GO DOGS!

Field Hockey Program Welcoming New players
The CHS Field Hockey program- one of the oldest and proudest programs in the region- is looking for new CHS student athletes to join them for the 2024 season.
Long-time CHS Head Coach Chrissy O'Connor, who has lead the program to a State Championship, had this to say to the CHS community as the season begins in less than two weeks-
"The Canton Field Hockey program is looking to add players to our program. No experience is needed and this is a no cut season for the program. With the addition of Mary McNeil (former CHS player and Merrimack College graduate) to the coaching staff this season it’s a great time to give field hockey a try."

Holland joins Bulldog Coaching staff as Head Varsity Girls Coach
The Canton High School Athletic Department is thrilled to announce the appointment of Chrystal Holland as our new Head Varsity Girls Basketball Coach. Holland takes the reigns from long-time coaching Jimmy Choquette, who served as the head of the Bulldog Girls Basketball program for a decade.
Coach Holland crafted the following letter to the Canton community, introducing herself to the school and town:
Dear Bulldog Family,Coach Chrystal Holland
My name is Chrystal Holland, and I’m originally from Stoughton, MA. Although my middle name isn’t “basketball”, anyone who knows me, knows it could’ve been. Ever since I can remember, I’ve been around the game of basketball. Whether it was watching my siblings from the sidelines, being coached by my parents on the foundations of the sport, playing in college with an amazing coaching staff and teammates, or coaching high school students alongside coaching legends, basketball has always been a part of me and something I plan to honor and give back to the sport that gave me so much. When I’m not coaching, watching, or playing basketball, I am working full-time as a Marketing Services Specialist at Harvard Medical School.
For the past three years I’ve coached the freshmen girls basketball team at Oliver Ames High School. I was also an assistant coach on the Junior Varsity and Varsity teams. I was a part of the coaching staff for Oliver Ames during their most recent state championship back in 2021. Coaching doesn't stop after the high school season is over, I also coach women's AAU during the spring/summer seasons.
As a player, I was a four-year varsity starter, and 2-year captain at Stoughton High School from 2008-2012. I played Division II basketball at American International College (AIC) in Springfield, MA. While at AIC, we won the regular season Championship in 2016 and made it to the first round of the DII NCAA tournament. Although I finished my basketball career at AIC, I still enjoy playing basketball through women’s summer leagues when I get a chance.
I am excited to continue my journey as the new head coach of the girl’s basketball team here at Canton High School this upcoming 2024-2025 school year. I look forward to the great season, and the great work we will do together!
Well said coach! Welcome to Canton!

O'Neill Named New Head Cheer Coach
Coach Jenny O'Neill |
Cheerleading has been a part of Coach O'Neill's life since 2nd grade. She has made a huge impact on the Bulldog program in her time here. Her ability to build strong, positive relationships with our student athletes was a big reason for her appointment to the position. She is a great person with a passion for cheerleading and for working with young people.
Coach O'Neill had this to say upon her appointment-
"I will strive to make the same positive impact on my student athletes that my coaches made on me. I realize it is a big responsibility and I'm up for the challenge! I cannot wait to get started as the Head Coach. Go Bulldogs!"
