Statement on Rink roof collapse

As you may know by now, there was a major, partial roof collapse of the Canton Metropolis Skating Rink this morning. Thankfully, despite there being a Norwood Youth team on the ice, there were no injuries.

Since this incident this morning, the CHS Athletic department has been in touch with MIAA officials to verify that the rinks being used for MIAA competition have been inspected for safety and have been proactive with dealing with snow removal where appropriate. MIAA officials have shared with us that Aisaf Rink in Brockton- the site of today's Boys Hockey game with Plymouth South- has undergone extensive snow removal from the roof and has been inspected by the state and deemed safe.

Compagna to take reigns of Girls LAX program

The Canton High School Athletic Department is excited to announce the hiring of Bethany Compagna as the new Girls Varsity Lacrosse coach starting next month. Compagna has served as the JV coach and assistant Varsity coach of the program for the past six years. For much of the past 12 years, she has worked with CYLax in helping to develop the girls program.  She has served as director of the girls program during that time as well.

Compagna takes over a program that has enjoyed a great deal of success over the years, consistently qualifying for the MIAA state tournament and competing well in the always tough Hockomock League.

Canton High School Athletic Director Danny Erickson praised Compagna, "Bethany is the perfect person for the task ahead. She is filled with passion and enthusiasm for the game and for Canton. We are excited for her, the girls and the program as we start a new chapter."

Coach Compagna will be hosting a sign up meeting for any girl interested in playing Lacrosse this spring on Monday, March 2nd at 2:00pm in the Distance Learning Lab.

Another snow-shortened Highlights of the week- Feb. 2-8th

Despite the crazy winter weather, the Bulldogs are persevering and great things continue to happen!

Swimmers excel at Sectionals- It was a historic weekend for our pool dogs as several of our best swimmers participated in the MIAA Sectional Swim meets.

Saturday saw Sebastian Melendez become the first male Bulldog swimmer in school history (as far as our records show) to win not only one first place medal, but two! Melendez took the top spot on the podium for his performances in the 500 freestyle (4:44.82) and the 200 freestyle (1:43.00).  He then joined his teammates- Dan Nadeau, Diego Ferstler and Owen Guerini to qualify for this upcoming weekend's States in the 400 freestyle relay (3:38.17). Also competing for the Bulldogs was Sean Mitchell who will also take to the pool for the States this weekend.

It was the Girls turn on Sunday.  Tiffany Ha was the big highlight placing 8th in the 100 backstroke (1:01.96).  Ha will be joined by her teammates- Kim Frazier, Amanda Walsh, Julia Guerini and Emilee Mercuri at next weekend's States.

Boys Hockey back to winning ways- The Boys Hockey team played 3 games in 4 days this week and were only able to hit the practice ice once in the past 8 days. The lack of practice didn't seem to hurt the on-ice performance as the team downed Attleboro (8-2), OA (2-0) and NA (6-4).  Every Hock win is important but the key victory of the week came against OA as both the Bulldogs and the Tigers were vying for the top spot in the Davenport Division of the league. Matt Lazaro and Brian Hagan each found the back of the OA net in the win that put the Davenport title race edge to the Bulldogs.  The wins also helped propel the Bulldogs into the State Tournament where they will certainly be a force to be reckoned with.

Girls Hockey knocks off another State Champ-  Less than a week after defeating the defending D1 State Champion Duxbury Dragons, the Bulldogs pulled off the amazing feat of defeating the defending D2 State Champion Westwood Wolverines- 4-0. It's not often that high school teams even get to play against two defending State Champs in a season, let alone beating them.  The win also catapulted the squad into the state tournament.  The team has also moved up the in the most recent Boston Globe Top 20 poll.

Girls Basketball end Hockomock skid- Girls basketball ended a 35 game Hockomock League losing streak spanning 3 seasons by avenging an earlier season 6 point lost to Stoughton on Friday.  The Bulldogs have shown the enormous growth this year with a decisive 75-39 victory, scoring the second most points by any team in the league throughout the entire season this year.  Gabby Kenefick lead the team with 14pts, Eileen Khoury had 10 rebounds and Shannon Foley added 8 steals and held Stoughton's leading scorer to 3 pts.  The Bulldogs have 4 games in 4 days this week including "Think Pink" night on Thursday at home vs. Taunton and Senior Night, on Friday at home vs. Sharon.

Silver Lining for Boys Basketball- Wins have not come easily of late for the Boys Basketball team but there's nothing quite like buzzer-beaters from beyond half-court to lift Bulldog spirits- click here to see Joe Peccia's remarkable shot at Stoughton on Friday night.

Bulldogs shine during this Championship week- Highlights- Jan. 26-31, 2015

It was a Blizzard-shortened week of Bulldog action but it certainly didn't lack some great team and individual efforts.

Girls Hockey upsets Duxbury- The Girls Hockey team stunned the defending D2 state champion Dragons in a dramatic 5-4 home win on Thursday. A Mary McNeil hat trick, an amazing goal by Mary Claire Thompson and a game-winner by Kelsey Trerice, paced the huge victory. Most impressive in the win was the tenacious way the Bulldogs held off a Dragon onslaught in the 3rd period including killing off a 5-on-3 power play for the visitors. The Bulldogs fell in a close match-up with Barnstable, 2-1 on Saturday but both Barnstable and Duxbury are ranked in the top 5 by the Globe. The Bulldogs have cracked the top 20 as well! The Boston Globe Girls Hockey Top 20.

Dicalogero crowned at Hock Wrestling Championship- Rod Dicalogero capped off an incredible Hockomock Wrestling career at Saturday's Hock Championships taking home his 2nd consecutive title in his 3rd straight appearance in the finals of his weight class (this year- 145). The victory came over Attleboro's Nick Gould (16-2).  Also advancing to the finals of his weight class was Reda Chakir while Brendan Lewis finished 3rd.

Melendez grabs two Golds in Hock Championship Swim Meet- Sebastian Melendez finished 1st in the 200 Free (1:46.08) AND in the 500 Free (4:46.80). It's been many years since the Bulldogs have had a gold medal winner at the Hocks....let alone someone winning twice!  Many other great performances were put in by Bulldogs on the day including Tiffany Ha coming in 3rd in the 100 Back stroke and 5th in the 100 Breaststroke.  Owen Guerini placed 4th in the 50 Free in a time of 24.74. Sean Mitchell swam to 5th place in the 100 Breaststroke while Dan Nadeau placed 10th in both the 100 Breaststroke and the 100 Fly.  Diego Ferstler placed 10th in the 100 Free (56.60). Amanda Walsh swam exceptionally well- finishing 4th in the 200 Free (2:12.27) qualifying for the Sectionals.  Julia Guerini place 8th in the 50 Free in 28.24.  In relay action- the team of Ha, Emilee Mercuri, Guerini, and Kim Frazier finished 7th in the 200IM.  The 200 Free relay saw Ha, Mercuri, Frazier and Guerini finish 6th. The team of Walsh, Kaitliyn McCarthy, Kelsey Irons and Brianna Mitchell finished 9th in the 400 Free relay.  On the boys' relay side, the 400 relay team of Mitchell, Nadeau, Guerini and Melendez finished 4th. Best of luck to all of the swimmers moving on to Sectionals and States.

Tracksters shine at Championship Meet- Saturday saw many Bulldogs perform extremely well at the Hock Championships at Reggie Lewis.

The top Boy performer was Liam Collins, who finished 3rd in the mile in a personal best time (4:35.71.)  Mark Clancy, who has been a strong, consistent runner all season, finished 4th in the 2-mile (10:27.47.)  Collins and Clancy were joined by Timmy Gutowski and Andrew Moy in a strong relay performance- finishing 6th in the 4x800.

The top Girls performer was Cat Song, who finished 2nd in the mile. Selena Cho finished 3rd in the 55m and also grabbed bronze in the long jump (16'3".)

Other Notables this week- The Boys Basketball team snapped a bit of a losing streak with a 61-49 win at Milford.  The Girls Hoop team came up just short in a bid for their first Hock victory of the season, falling 46-48 to Milford. The Boys Hockey team played a strong game against league rival Franklin, jumping out to a 1-0 lead, but they were unable to hold off the Panthers who came back to score 2 goals in the 3rd to defeat the 'dogs.
