CHS Booster Club Needs You!

The CHS Athletic Booster Club has been supporting CHS student athletes and teams for 15 years. Like for so many other organizations, the past year was not an ordinary one for the Boosters.  But, a small group of dedicated parents kept it going through the rough waters.  A BIG thank you to those folks- who I'm sure would prefer to remain behind the scenes!

It is now time to get things with the Boosters back to "normal." so we can hit the ground running this August as Fall Sports begin.

The Boosters will be hosting an informational meeting on Tuesday, June 29th at 6:30 in the CHS Cafeteria.

In order for the Boosters to continue supporting our student athletes, we NEED parents of our 'dogs to get involved.  There is a place for Booster parents who are able to commit lots of time and a place for parents who can only commit occasional, limited time. They need all comers!

Please consider attending the meeting on June 29th. It doesn't come with any strings attached but does provide a great opportunity to help enhance the CHS student athlete experience.

Thank you!

Gordy moves on from Boys Basketball - appointed Special Assistant to AD

Coach Ryan Gordy cutting down the net
in 2018 after leading his Bulldogs to
their first Hock Title in 26 years.

The CHS Athletic Department has some bitter-sweet news to share as we announce that Coach Ryan Gordy will be leaving his role of Head Boys Basketball coach and assuming the role as the department's first-ever Special Assistant to the Athletic Director.  The resignation takes effect immediately and the Special Assistant position will officially begin in July.

With the recent retirement of Denise Duffett as the CHS Athletic Department Secretary after nearly two decades behind the desk, the department has re-organized with the creation of the Special Assistant role. The position will see Gordy assisting with all aspects of the CHS Athletic Department ranging from administrative to supervisory to managerial duties. The shift will allow the department to be more efficient and more in line with the needs of the department in 2021.  The student athlete experience will certainly continue to improve at a more rapid clip with the introduction of this new position and with Coach Gordy in the role.  He brings amazing experiences, a vast understanding of the culture of CHS Athletics and a passion and love of high school athletics to this new role.

An Appreciative Farewell-

Gordy with his boys after winning
the Davenport in 2019

Coach Gordy has been at the helm of the CHS Boys Basketball program for the past decade. During that time he has developed a program respected by the entire Hockomock League and beyond.   He laid a foundation of success with his credo of "Commit-Compete" and in preaching to always "honor the process."  Coach Gordy's teams certainly lived up to those important pillars.

Over the past decade, Coach Gordy's teams have been honored with several Hockomock League Sportsmanship Awards and two Hockomock Davenport Championships.  The highlight of Gordy's tenure was undoubtedly how he marshaled his program through the tragic medical challenge suffered by his captain- Xavier Machuga. His support of "X" and his lessons of empathy for his entire program during this time really showcases what high school sports is all about.

Gordy led his Bulldogs to 87 victories during his time as head coach- highlighted by League Divisional titles in 2018 and 2019- a two year stretch that saw the Bulldogs go 20-1 at CHS's Masciarelli Gymnasium.

Coach Gordy has been a mentor to many in the Basketball world and at CHS.  The CHS Athletic Department is thrilled to have him assuming this new role.

Gordy had this to say upon his appointment-

"A decade of running the boys basketball program has been the thrill of my career. But now I look forward to stepping into a role where I can work with the athletes and coaches of all our sports programs at CHS."

Class of 2021 Recognized for Athletic Achievement

The CHS Athletic Department recognizes annually, the many athletic achievements of our graduating seniors. This year is no exception. At last night's Senior Gala, we disclosed the names of all of the members of the class of 2021 who earned a varsity letter during their four years here as well as those who received individual honors.

The link below brings you to a slide show that we used at the Gala. Please check out carefully the students who earned varsity letters, All-Hockomock, State Championships, captaincies and some amazing individual honors.   We also highlight those graduating seniors who will be playing a sport in college next year and also our student athletes who are moving on to serve in our Armed Forces.

The slides are set for 30 second transitions so it takes 13 minutes for the entire deck to cycle through, but  you can also navigate through on your own quicker. Either way works!

Congratulations to all of our Seniors!

The Face of the CHS Athletic Office Retiring

After a nearly twenty years of running all of the comings and goings of the CHS Athletic Office, Denise Duffett is retiring at the end of the week.  It has been an amazing career that has seen Mrs. Duffett contribute to so many of our CHS student athletes' experiences.

Denise Duffett

Most of Mrs. Duffett's contributions have been behind the scenes- just the way she likes it.  She has been the gatekeeper of student rosters, user fees, officials management, buses and so many other essential pieces of the athletic office. She has also prided herself on her meticulous tracking of student athlete varsity letter acquisition and archiving. Thanks to her hard work, we have exceptional record keeping of all varsity letter winners over the past two decades. She has always been committed to and so proud of rewarding graduating seniors each year at the annual senior banquet (on hiatus since 2019).  Her most important contribution- by a mile- has been the positive environment she set for student athletes, coaches and anyone else who has visited our office. She has been greeting everyone with a smile and lots of cheer for twenty years!

Mrs. Duffett started her journey in the Athletic Office under former Athletic Director John Piemontese.  After just one year under Piemontese, she had to train her next AD- Danny Erickson.  She has been (trying) to make Mr. Erickson look good ever since!   A long time resident of Canton, she and her husband John raised two daughters here- Emily and Ashley.  Both are graduates of CHS.  John and Denise are heading to the Cape to enjoy their retirement together there.  Canton will miss them!

A Personal Note-  The Athletic Office will not be the same without Denise.  She has been the perfect partner.  Any Athletic Director would have been lucky to have had someone of her care, work-ethic and commitment. Most importantly- it has been so much FUN working together. The laughs and memories will last a lifetime. Thank you Denise! You are the best!
