Durham takes the tennis reins

Coach Myra Durham
The CHS Athletic Department is thrilled to announce the appointment of Myra Durham as our new Girls Varsity Tennis Coach. Durham takes the reins from long-time CHS coach and still active Social Studies teacher- Joel Chamberlain.

Durham has a history of competitive tennis in both singles and doubles from four years of high school tennis, four years of collegiate tennis at Quinnipiac- where she served as a two-year captains- and several years of plying in competitive adult leagues. In 2023, she took over the coaching duties for the Norwood High School Girls Tennis program where she made a major impact in just the one season.

Durham is a Canton resident and was excited to see the opportunity to coach in the town she lives in. Her daughter Olivia graduated last year but played for the CHS Tennis team during her time here. Her daughter Kailyn plays in the CHS Softball program. An Occupational Therapist by training, she is currently working as an Executive Function Coach.

Durham had this to say upon her formal appointment to the position-

"I am excited and grateful for the opportunity to coach the Girls Tennis team at Canton High School! I hope to build on the strong foundation Coach Chamberlain has built with this program over the past several years. I look forward to all the highs and lows, all the wins and lessons and working with an incredible group of athletes!"

We wish Coach Durham and the Girls Tennis team good fortune and successes as they start this exciting new chapter.

Mid-Season Bulldog update

It's been a great start to the winter season for our Bulldog varsity teams. We are currently in the heart of the season and there is much to be proud of.  Below is a short update of where our teams stand at this point.

Boys Basketball-
The Boys Varsity Basketball team is off to a great start this season. Their current record is 7-2, highlighted by a huge win over D1 power Taunton (70-62). The 'dog also took home the Championship in Milton High School's Derrick Snowden Holiday Tournament. Senior Lucas Massih averaged 15 points in the tournament and was awarded tourney MVP.  Fellow seniors Jeremiah Predin and Zaza Francoeur have led the way for the Bulldogs offensively.  The team currently sits at #17 in the MIAA D2 Power Rankings.

Gymnastics- The Gymnastics team are currently 0-3 but have continued to improve. Some highlights thusfar include the following performances against Oliver Ames and Mansfield -

  • Jayda Proffitt- 1st of the uneven bars with an 8.7 against OA.
  • Mia Murphy- 3rd on vault with an 8.5 and 3rd on beam with an 8.25 against OA.
  • Mia Murphy and Sophia Salvatori tied for 4th on vault with an 8.0 against Mansfield.

Boys Hockey- The Boys Varsity Ice Hockey team hits the midpoint of the season with an 8-0-1 record, highlighted by two big wins over rival Franklin. Other highlights include a convincing 5-0 victory over perennial power Lincoln-Sudbury along with successfully retaining the Joe Donnelly Cup over Westwood. The team is happy with our performance to date, but we also know that our most challenging stretch of the schedule is coming up in the next few weeks, with showdowns against King Philip, Newburyport, and Archbishop Williams, as well as three games late in the season in the Ed Burns Tournament, which features 16 of some of the best high school hockey programs in the state. The team sits at #2 in the MIAA D2 Power Rankings.

Swimming- The Boys and Girls Swim teams are continuing their high level achievement this season- each of them posting a 5-1 record to date. The only girls loss came in a non-league matchup with Dedham so their Hock Davenport record is spotless.  Qualifying for Sectionals and States are Talis Veidis, Annie McLean, Keeley Harney, Anita Lee as well as three girls relays.

Girls Hockey- The Girls Varsity Hockey team is off to a tremendous start, posting an 8-2 record thusfar. A 3-2 comeback win over King Philip earlier this week firmly bolstered the team's chances of repeating as Hockomock Champs for the 4th time. The team will be heading to Martha's Vineyard this weekend to participate in a tournament on the island. Many big games ahead! The team sits at #7 in the MIAA D2 Power Rankings.

Boys and Girls Indoor Track- The Boys and Girls Varsity Indoor Track teams have been working hard every day, and this hard work has been showing through many personal bests being achieved each meet. The Girls team currently sits with a 1-2 record while the boys are 0-3. They have faced some of their toughest opponents of the season already. Both teams have good leadership, and are receiving scoring contributions across all grades and event areas.

Currently sitting in the top 10 of the competitive Hockomock League are...
  • Katie Oliver: 2nd long jump and 7th 55 meter hurdles
  • Chloe Dubuisson: 3rd 300 meter
  • Lianna Camille: 5th 300 meter
  • Lexi Piazza: 5th 600 meter
  • Nora Giannacopolous: 9th in the 1000 meter
  • Girls 4x400: 3rd

Girls Basketball-
The Girls Varsity Basketball team has battled hard to a 4-5 mark at this point in the season. The well-balanced team has taken care of business in many games earning victories against key Hock opponents. The currently sit at #34 in the MIAA D2 Power Rankings- just outside the qualification mark at this point.

Wrestling- The Varsity Wrestling team has posted a record of 5-12 up until this point in the season. Standouts so far on the mat have been Rauiri Ritson (25-1), Max Kupferman (27-2), Effrem Gnepo, Matt Sica and Seamus Brown. A 40-21 win over Hock Davenport foe Mansfield was a highlight of the first half of the season.

Cheerleading- Competition season starts up soon but the team is already working hard in preparation. They have been very impressive on the game-day side of things.
