Bulldogs honored at Hock Student Athlete Banquet

Written by Jess Hooton

Last night, the Hockomock League hosted its annual Hockomock League Scholar Athlete banquet. The recipients of these awards were two students, one male and one female, from each of the schools in the Hock. The senior students selected represent what it means to excel both in the classroom and on the field. Those awarded exemplify the “student” in student-athlete.  There are more than 1,000 senior student athletes that compete in the league each year, so this small group of 24 being honored is an elite group. Canton’s two recipients were Tess Giglio and Max Eagles (pictured below).

Both Giglio and Eagles have earned high GPA’s in their time at Canton High School and have been incredible not only as athletes but as teammates. Also in attendance was Canton High School Principal Jeff Sperling and CHS Athletic Director Danny Erickson.  Sperling expressed excitement for the event stating that it is “special” and “unique to the Hock.” Sperling also recognized the significance of how the night unites the teams within the league, keeping sportsmanship “a top priority.”

The keynote speaker for the evening was Canton Superintendent, Derek Folan. Folan, who has spent his entire life in the Hockomock League, shared his story of resilience and the importance of building relationships. Canton’s contingent was proud of his remarks.

Giglio’s contributions to the school don’t stop at the turf or the classroom. She has been a key member of her class’ student council for the past four years, creating incredible events and fundraising for her peers. As a member of the girls varsity soccer team at CHS since her freshman year, Tess is an asset on the field as a great two way player. In the winter she brings her leadership to the Basketball court as a captain and two year varsity member. She played great in the team’s matchup against North Attleboro where they lost in a close 56-61 matchup. In the fall, Giglio will be attending the University of South Carolina to study nursing

As for Eagles, who is a captain for soccer and lacrosse, he was recognized as a leader in his three sports. Since freshman year Eagles has absolutely dominated in faceoffs during the lacrosse season winning 73% making him a team leader. He received a Hock All-Star Honorable Mention for his success and also made the League’s Second Team for the 2024 season. As for hockey, Eagles is a forward for the state finalist team who went all the way to TD Garden for the D2 State Championship this year. His skills go beyond athletics as he has taken multiple AP classes specifically AP Art during his time at CHS. He is an incredible artist and has been recognized for his skill and dedication. In the fall, Eagles will be attending Penn State where he will be majoring in economics.

The CHS Athletic Department would like to congratulate Giglio and Eagles on their accomplishments and wish them the best as they continue to the next chapters of their lives.
